My great grandfather was aboard the USS Missouri when the Japanese came aboard to surrender. He always said that it was one of the biggest moments of his life, and he always regretted that he didn’t have a camera during that visit. I think that I would like to go back in time to that event, and bring a camera with me.

Roku TV bricked until agreeing to new terms of service

See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn’t use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don’t agree to their terms, then I don’t get access to their new products. That...

IANAL either, but I’m pretty sure you are correct. I put it in another comment somewhere, but I’m more upset about not being given a choice to refuse the change rather than the actual change itself. I don’t mind signing the waiver at amusement parks, or to buy a car with no warranty. I just want to know what I’m agreeing to, and I don’t like folks pulling the rug out from under me or changing the deal.

The situation feels like if I were to drop out of college, I would be given electroshocks until I’d forgotten anything learned in class.

On the flip side, the font caught my eye and made me want to read what it said.

Which then took 5 minutes because I couldn’t easily read what it said. But still, good marketing of a comment

That is incredibly fortunate and I am happy they are unhurt. However, that isn’t really a better situation imo. That means that the cop fired multiple shots and never managed to hit their target. That puts them in danger if they ever are in a fire fight, and dangerous for everyone nearby who isn’t who they are trying to shoot.

Not quite- in Appalachia, most homes have a porch. Appalachia is, generally speaking, quite a muggy place, so most people sleep inside and then spend their time outside on the porch. The porch plays the same role as a living room or den in other parts of the US.

A porch thief is basically the same as any other burglar, but they will (almost) exclusively steal from porches because it is often less risky than stealing from the rest of the house.

Because of the important role of a porch as a primary living area, porch thieves can make off with family heirlooms, money, games, furniture, children’s toys, and even TV sets.

Tangential fun fact: the guy from “Shadiversity” and the guy from “Drawing with Jazza” are brothers. This is incredibly odd to me because I don’t think that they look or act alike at all.

Project Ideas For Selection Statements

Hey all, I want to revamp some of my assignments this coming semester. One of the first projects I always start with is something to get some hands-on experience with conditional logic. However, these projects are getting pretty stale at this point. So, I’m turning to this community for some fresh ideas....

I’m actually going to fault regulations on this one. The EPA bases fuel economy requirements on the wheelbase of the vehicle. They used to publish a range of values based every other year or so, but then changed it to a formula. The formula is non-linear, making it neigh impossible to build anything with a small wheelbase anymore. In theory, they could design a small hybrid truck, but would need an obnoxiously long bed to compensate.

I watched a YouTube video on it not terribly long ago, and iirc, a 95 Ford Ranger, if held to the current formula-based regulations, would need 60+ mpg to be produced without major penalties to the company.

The EPA either needs to reevaluate the formula, or start manually publishing the numbers with values that are actually achievable by the industry at scale. Basically, by publishing the formula, manufacturers are able to min-max their designs in all the wrong ways.

EDIT: Updated for clarity and fixed some typos

Request for Couch Co-Op Games on Switch

I'm looking for something new to play with my 7yo son. Mario games are a great amount of fun, but I'm feeling pretty burnt out and am looking to expand things a little bit. We are looking for cooperative games like Pikmin 3, Cuphead, and Hyrule Warriors rather than competitive-only games like Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart....
