Allotment life.... Largely images and information about our successes and failures from our allotments in the centre of England. Mostly no dig, mostly raised beds apart from the fruit and potatoes which are in tubs. We keep chickens too and even though we have been doing this for a number of years we learn something new every week. It can be hard and exhausting but at the same time it can be rewarding and fascinating. We love itโ€ฆ

Root vegetables ๐Ÿฅ— Time to thin the parsnips out so there is just one plant per station ๐Ÿ˜€ Quite a slow process as we have to be so careful not to pull everything out. We thin two rows a day over a week just in case we cock something up and have to transplant๐Ÿ‘‡

Corn ๐ŸŒฝ and dwarf french beans ๐Ÿซ˜ planted. ๐Ÿ‘ We have removed the fabric covering from the beds as it was too difficult to get the corn roots out last year ๐Ÿ˜ข Safari beans ๐Ÿซ˜ and Lark sweetcorn ๐ŸŒฝ

Project brassica update โ—๏ธ The two posts on the left were put in yesterday and the two on the right are actually water points ๐Ÿ’ฆ There is fine wire at a height of six feet between the posts and diagonally across. Plan is โ€ฆ. when the netting arrives we will create a large brassica cage that we can walk into instead of dealing with the hoops and netting on the current beds.

Sometimes itโ€™s hard keeping up with the tasks ๐Ÿฅฒ Watering the plot seems to take an age โ—๏ธ Comfrey chop today. This is the second time this year that weโ€™ve cut this comfrey bed back ๐Ÿ˜Ž It also gives the spare broad beans ๐Ÿซ˜ a chance to grow โ€ฆโ€ฆ

Lost another toot this morning - titled Potato update - the published banner appeared but I canโ€™t see it on any timeline yet - strange and sad ๐Ÿ˜ข What I donโ€™t want to do is create toots elsewhere because I like to write them while Iโ€™m on the plot!!! Hey ho โ€ฆโ€ฆ

Runner beans ๐Ÿซ˜ take 2โ€ฆ.. As the moonlight beans didnโ€™t germinate we ordered some firestorm runner beans. Following advice, we soaked them on damp tissue and they germinated in five days. ๐Ÿ‘ They have now been dropped in holes with the tap root facing down and weโ€™re hoping that gives them a good start ๐Ÿ™
