Allotment life.... Largely images and information about our successes and failures from our allotments in the centre of England. Mostly no dig, mostly raised beds apart from the fruit and potatoes which are in tubs. We keep chickens too and even though we have been doing this for a number of years we learn something new every week. It can be hard and exhausting but at the same time it can be rewarding and fascinating. We love it…

Potato update 🥔 This is why we grow Picasso potatoes 😎 They are a great all rounder from boiled to baked 😋 First tub from those we sheltered last week provided almost 12 pounds of spuds this morning 👍

I was pleased that we are now able to continue our CornFest 2023. The third planting is now ready to begin harvesting. So far, between plantings 1 and 2 we have managed to bring 165 ears of to the table. (Yes, we eat 99% of it ourselves. This is my reward to myself for all the garden labor.)

Over a dozen ears of "Flagler" sweetcorn still in it's husks. They are in a wooden basket.

Just using what space we can find 🤓 and although it’ll all be over in two or three months, while we can plant we should plant❗️ Where the squash are now we had garlic 🧄 where the leeks are now we had broad beans 🫘 where the courgettes are now we had strawberries 🍓 and where the spring onions are now we had flowers 💐 all not more than a month ago 😊

It really is corny 🌽 but we have done better - this year is not so good for corn for us❗️ We planted “Lark” and “Incredible” and the “Lark” is almost struggling to even appear 😮 The “Incredible” are doing well but we have less of them 😢

You do get to the stage that there is far too much of everything on the allotment 🥹 Even the freezers are filling up 😯 so the best thing to do is share the growth 👍 Here are some of the beautiful things we will be giving to friends this afternoon. Cucumber 🥒 some aubergine 🍆 dwarf french beans and some swede 😊

What a treat ❗️ We have just picked these blackberries to make a blackberry and apple pie for this evening 😋 There is a plot on the site that is overgrown with no tenant and lots of blackberries (completely overgrown) 🙏

So nice when you can pick something for lunch than having to buy from the shops 👍 We are following a recipe for courgette fritters and changing just one ingredient (swapping dill for coriander) 😊 So we have spring onions, coriander, mint, red onion and of course courgettes https://eatingeuropean.com/kolokithokeftedes-greek-zucchini-fritters/

Not enough sun ☀️ for the blueberries 🫐 Ah well, they’ve done their best and what we have will be harvested this weekend 😎 We noticed that the ones that are really ready are starting to drop and we can’t have that ❗️

Yet another task ❗️ The potatoes 🥔 grew this year in tubs and sunk a couple of inches into the bark shown in the image below 😎 After careful thought we have decided to remove the bark in the spud tub section as we think it have contributed to keel worm damage where the tubs were dropped into the bark and where moisture has clearly accumulated at the lower part of each tub. 👍 Next year they will just sit on the fabric

After reading another great article in Mike Rogers’ Flighty's plot blog post @Sofaflyer it reminds me that our comfrey patch is due for it’s third haircut this year. It really amazes us that this incredible plant just keeps on giving 😎

Aubergine air flow 👍 Trimmed the bottom leaves 🍃 from the aubergines 🍆 to help with movement of air. Good number of fruits forming now 😎

Hard to believe that the Globo onions 🧅 have grown to this size 😎 Planted at the beginning of May they just sat there and on the longest day they just started to grow 👍 They’ll be ready to harvest in four weeks

With all this rain ☔️ we have lots of growth. The squash plants have doubled in size over a week but not fruit yet ❗️ The sprouts are growing fast and have lots of little sprouts 😜

No rhyme, no reason 🥸 Potato update 🥔 We are emptying the last eleven tubs of Sagitta potatoes and from the first three tubs we harvested 6.10kg and from the next three tubs only 1.60kg ❗️ Go figure…. Still happy as they’re beautiful spuds 😜

All squashed in now 🤞 Planted ten Chieftain squash in what was the bed 🧄 (two thirds of it) and still have nine left to plant Uciki Kuri (5) and Waltham butternut (4). 😎Changing the compost in the bed at the end of the year in an attempt to reduce the amount of white rot. 😢

It’s like a jungle in here ❗️ There are only eight bush tomatoes 🍅 each side of the 20 foot greenhouse but it’s become so busy it’s hard to find the watering pots 😢 We introduced an additional bush tomato plant this year called Hienz 1350 - and we didn’t realise how big it gets.
