I hate clickbait titles like this (directed at Herald not you OP). They intentionally leave out the "in donations" part in the headline to get people to click their bullshit.
I created a post with around 90 images (using “upload image”). It works, but the post is very slow to load, as it’s trying to download all the images simultaneously. Is there any trick to fixing this?...
But then, if anything happened to that service (downtime, billing, ending of free services, etc etc), the images could be lost.
If anything happens to the instance you are uploading them to, they'll be gone as well.
My personal opinion is it's much better to offload images into a service meant for images. A lot of lemmy instances are put on very small servers, with very small resources (including drive space). It's not fair to the owners of those instances to upload a bunch of large images to them.
Note that this functionality is not meant to share large images or videos, because that would require too many server resources. Instead, upload them on another platform like PeerTube or Pixelfed, and share the link on Lemmy.
This also served as a good reminder to look into disabling image uploads on my instance. I can't afford a massive server for it to host other peoples images which is both size and resource intensive.
It's faster by using a server that's meant to host images or a CDN.
I'm saying you should be loading 90 images onto a lemmy server at all, let alone in one post. Use a third party which is meant to host images and it will be faster, or host your own lemmy instance on your own server and upload them there. That way the burden is on you for the extra resources required to host images, and not on the admin of whatever instance you are using.
There is a reason the official docs (and all the other comments here) are saying to use a third party and not the lemmy server directly.
Just figured this might be some welcome news to shout out from the crow's nest. Haven't tried it yet myself, so would love some feedback, me hearties! https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/pictrs/image/48221b32-eee4-4c28-8f48-6dee90f73c58.png
I have been using Brave browser with the crypto stuff disabled.
The mere fact that you have to "disable the crypto stuff" tells me all I nee to know about Brave Browser, and it's enough to ensure I'll never install it.
My personal subs that have been private for ages recieved messages saying they will inform me of "further steps" if I refuse to open them up.
One of them is /r/[myRedditUsername] that I use as a kind of scratch pad that I can access anywhere (I've since self hosted a wiki) that they are demanding I open up. Like seriously, no one would ever be interested in whatever is there.
They can get fucked. I deleted all of the posts and comments on all of my accounts and requested GDPR requests on all of them. reddit can get fucked.
I just submitted a GDPR request on all of my alts. It takes them time and resources to do them, which costs them money even if it's automated. Once they complete them, I'm torn between keeping the accounts and requesting it every 30 days, or just deleting all of my alts.
Either way they've all been overwritten and removed already, the accounts themselves just haven't been deleted.
I hear that plastic bags are soon to be banned? How will that affect you? I've already thought about rubbish bags and bin liners and I don't know what the alternative will be yet. They aren't third party. They are buying Google Domains and all of the customers that come with it. If you don't like it, don't continue to use them. It happens every time a company gets bought out, the customers are part of that package.
I give ~$15/month total to a couple of creators I really enjoy. They put a lot of hard work into their videos for a relatively niche subject, and it's not much to me. It helps them a little so I don't mind doing it.
Why is this posted to Technology? This has nothing to do with Technology, and belongs in one of the many reddit threads or communities that already exist.
So Elon gutted Twitter, and people jumped ship to Mastodon. Now spez did... you know... and we're on Lemmy and Kbin. Can we have a YouTube to PeerTube exodus next? With the whole ad-pocalypse over there, seems like Google is itching for it.
I've looked at peertube a few times, and everytime I do, it seems to be filled with nothing but videos about the latest cryptoscamcoin. I have zero interest in that at all. Until they get content worth watching, it's not going to happen.
90-plus percent of Reddit users are on our platform, contributing, and are monetized either through ads or Reddit Premium
I wonder how many of those reddit premium members have cancelled their subscriptions. I know I did. I had premium for years as it seemed like a good way to give a little bit back to a site I was using multiple times a day, every day. As soon as Spez started his bullshit I cancelled it and won't be back.
I just got a threat from them on one of the subs I moderate that is private and has been for years. It included this gem:
If this community remains private, we will reach out soon with information on what next steps will take place.
We already know what their "next steps" are. It will be interesting to see if they ban my account as well. I've already nuked all of my comments and posts. Fuck them.
Zuckerberg’s company is already courting celebrities and influencers to test the app.
Even if it was someone other than Zuckerberg doing this, reading this bit would immediately turn me off to the platform.
I guess I'm old enough to have gone through they heyday of the internet at an impressionable time in my life, but I have zero time for influencers or opinions by celebrities on literally anything.
Things do sometimes take a bit to come across, and I tend to get a bunch of posts from a single instance come in at one. It does make a bit of a pain at times as I won't see anything at all from an instance, then my front page fills up with nothing but posts from one community within an instance (that's how I came across this thread).
Holy crap, this man does not have an original thought in his head does he?
He thinks he'll become the next Musk by emulating the next Musk. Only problem is, he skipped steps 1-10 which involve owning a company (X.com) that another merges with (Confinity) which becomes a huge company (Paypal) that gets bought out by a massive company (Ebay).
Then you can start acting like a massive asshole while throwing money at everything.
Unfortunately, Spez doesn't realize steps 1-10 exist, and thinks he can just treat everyone like shit and have people think (at least for a while) that he's a genius. Also forgets about steps 11-200 which is to surround yourself with brilliant people that can build your shit so you become more rich. Then you can become the asshole everyone hates.
Sadly Spez is on step 200+ without the cash from steps 1-199 and has surrounded himself by "yes men" instead of brilliant people that know what the fuck they are doing, which leads him to build whatever next big think like Twitter was will be.
I was going to include that, however in my literal minute of searching him, I couldn't find a verified source. I will admit, I didn't try very hard at all so I may have just overlooked it.
Is there a way to automatically sync bookwyrm to calibre or (shudder) goodreads? I have a kindle and having to remember to go in and add my new books or progress is a bit of a pain.
