Oregon weekly newspaper lays off entire staff after discovering a former employee had embezzled $90,000 and left bills unpaid (fortune.com)

An Oregon weekly newspaper has had to lay off its entire staff and halt print after 40 years because its funds were embezzled by a former employee, its editor said, in a devastating blow to a publication that serves as an important source of information in a community that, like many others nationwide, is struggling with growing...

Ech,

Isn’t this why a lot of companies have essentially mandatory vacation for their accountants? Gives a baked in reason to have another set of eyes on the practices of the department.

Ech,

Could be worth looking into Misophonia. Basically it’s an irrational anger response to specific noises that vary person to person. I don’t know enough about it to say how it can be dealt with, but it may be something you could find a specialist for.

Ech,

I pitty the poor, volunteer admins facing clueless users dealing with downtime. “You said it’d only be an hour! WHAT’S GOING ON!?!?”

How to de-radicalize my mom's youtube algorithm?

She’s almost 70, spend all day watching q-anon style of videos (but in Spanish) and every day she’s anguished about something new, last week was asking us to start digging a nuclear shelter because Russia was dropped a nuclear bomb over Ukraine. Before that she was begging us to install reinforced doors because the...

Ech,

Go into the viewing history and wipe it. Then maybe view some more normal stuff to set it on a good track. That should give a good reset for her, though it wouldn’t stop her from just looking it up again, of course.

Ech,

Let’s all unite around pride in America instead of falling into the trap of dividing along lines of identity politics.

They say, totally not engaging in “identity politics” 🙄

Ech,

This is not a comment on you, but I do the same thing and have come to realize it’s at least in part a response to being judged in some way (or feeling judged at least) over things I shared with my family, so now I just don’t share.

If it’s important to you, it might be worth having a conversation about why they are withholding and, if it’s for similar reasons, addressing why they feel that way and assuring them you’ll do your best to keep them from feeling bad about sharing.

Tried to look at an Amber Alert today (lemmy.world)

I have a long commute in and out of a large city. Since I spend so much time on the road, I always try to get the details of Amber Alert notifications to be on the lookout for vehicles used in abductions. I guess I can't do that anymore since Twitter requires an account to see Amber Alerts. Hopefully my state finds another...

Ech,

I've been constantly amazed at how normalized it's gotten for not only other companies, but for governments, to rely so much on sites like Twitter, Facebook, etc, for essential information like Amber Alerts. Shit like this hopefully makes people more aware of how treacherous it is to rely on corporate services for public services. Maybe the gov will finally institute their own web services for public information (unlikely) or at least enact boundaries on services that have been widely adopted (slight more likely).

Ech,

"Attempted murder" seems appropriate

Ech,

Gonna be another spike in the next week, so probably not soon, but it will die down.

Ech,

$40 billion for outdated and outclassed infrastructure. Brilliant.

Would be better spent ripping the current fiber infrastructure that exists from the hands of isps holding it hostage and expanding it.

Ech,

I feel like “mansplaining” has lost all meaning. It used to be about men going out of their way to correct someone that didn’t need correcting, particularly if they were wrong themselves, and most often with women. Now people use it on men just…saying things to anyone.

I get that people are touchy on the subject, and I respect anyone’s right to not want or need help. I think how Mr. Solomon handled it was correct - ask if they want your input and respect their answer. It’d just be nice if people didn’t use cultural memes to dismiss others out of hand.

Ech,

Pretty gross how people are using this to pump up their notoriety, from Beast here to the others saying they "knew" this would happen. Even if it were true, it's not something you start bragging about. People died. Disgusting.

With Steam's Next Fest over halfway done, what demos have you played and enjoyed most?

I've only gotten through a few, myself. House Flipper 2 seemed like an interesting iteration on the original (from what I played of that). Not necessarily for me, but I think it'll please those that are looking for that. I played quite a bit more Kingdom Eighties than I expected I would. Having just played the first Kingdom for...

Ech,

I mean, on that front, MS has been releasing pretty much every "exclusive* on PC for some time. Starfield itself is coming to PC. I think it's kinda weird that we label PCs under the "MS Console" umbrella and shame them for it, but Sony gets praised for it.

Ech,

have been pleasantly surprised to see very little “le narwhal bacons when?” shit so far

You've been away from there for a while huh? That's ancient Reddit stuff at this point.

Ech,

They're banning it for third-parties specifically. They know it drives traffic and are ensuring they get all of it.

Ech, (edited )

Why would we subsidize this small group? Why would we effectively pay them to use Reddit but not everybody else who also contributes to Reddit?”

Wait? Is he talking about mods here? What an absolutely brain dead, mask-off take. Any mod that doesn't see this statement as a slap in the face is either too bought in to think objectively, or simply likes being taken advantage of. Wow.

Not about the mods. Still dumb af.

Ech,

Lemmings jumping off a cliff is a myth set up for a "documentary" by Disney. They literally chased them off the cliff to get the footage.

So it's actually pretty apropos, as most people are going to be confused/ill-informed about what Lemmy is for a while.

Ech,

Good time to reiterate - Never talk to the police. They are not your friend. Anything you say will be used against you. They will do anything they can get away with to get an admission, or just steal your property because they can.

Don't Talk to The Police (lecture featuring a lawyer and a retired cop detailing why it will never help to talk).

Ech,

Reddit's actual daily users only equates to about half that number. While an interesting metric, Google search rates don't equate to users. Heck, my searching for that information contributed to that and I didn't click through to Reddit once.

Ech,

If you look at the table on Awesome Lemmy Instances, Beehaw is far and away the most block-happy instance around, blocking over 70% of all instances in the Fediverse. They seem to see it as the defacto way to manage their instance.

Makes sense since, as other users have pointed out, the whole instance seems to be run by only a handful of the same Admins/Mods, so they are likely stretched very thin and are just taking the biggest swings they can to manage everything. They either need a major overhaul to their approach or that instance is going to fade into nothing.
