This is why I keep a physical backup of all my emulator installers on an external hard drive. They get rid of some emulators, I still got my personal copies!
Because I live in America and there’s pretty much no public transportation.
Trust me, if I had a train, I’d fucking use that sucker. Travel into town for my weekly errands AND I don’t have to deal with people not using cruise control on a highway? SIGN ME THE FUCK. UP.
FUCK yes, at least if you live in a rural town. I live in a small farming town of 5 000 people. There is ONE grocery store here. Once a week, I go on errands (appointments, shopping, etc.) and I have to travel 25–30 minutes, or about 15 miles. And that’s driving. There’s no bus line, no train line, so if I wanted to walk, it’d take about 6 hours to walk.
There are other places to buy groceries: for example, there’s a small carryout down the street and a Dollar General as well. But those aren’t really “grocery stores” nor are they big stores. There are also a smattering of small businesses of course.
There also might be one or two in nearby small towns (which are still like 10–15 min drive away even then).
But for a good number of tasks, you still have to go into town, so my point still stands.
As someone who has worked for Family Dollar (which is a part of the same industry (“discount variety store”)), I absolutely hate that industry with a passion and refuse to shop at any store like Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree, etc. That whole industry is even more predatory towards employees than even regular retail stores are. That’s how they get the items so cheap in the first place—aside from supply chain injustices (read: slavery, same as most other industries), it comes out of the workers, both in pay and workload.
Anyway, I didn’t initially mean to go off on this spiel, so I’m sorry about that, and in any case my original point is still valid, I feel.

Wow. facepalm The words literally say there’s no problem, and yet it somehow implies there is a problem? Talk about overthinking what someone is saying.
This is why I often hate neurotypical communication styles. The world would be a lot more straightforward if people just said what they meant. Jesus fucking Christ on a motorbike…
If you think that LLM’S are anything like encyclopedias, you fundamentally misunderstand what an LLM is.
I never said I think they’re anything like encyclopedias; I said that being so skeptical that you feel you have to personally verify every little thing you hear or read or watch would be akin to not trusting second- or third-party sources, such as encyclopedias, books, essays, documentaries, expert opinions, etc.
Its a story teller. Its not designed to be right its designed to engaging.
That heavily depends on how its designed and for what purpose. It is not a hard-and-fast rule.
their very foundation is antithetical to that and it makes them very hard to believe.
Current iterations maybe. But future iterations will improve. As they say, it’s a learning process.
Every current LLM is built this way so it is a hard and fast rule.
No, that is a trend, not a rule, and the former of which I would argue is not even 100%. Claude in my experience of using it seems to be designed to be more conversational and factual, not strictly entertaining.
And right now its incredibly foolish to believe what an LLM tells you. They lie, like a lot.
I never said you should believe everything an LLM says. Of course a critical mind is important, but one can’t necessarily just assume any answer they give is wrong either just because they’re an LLM. Especially in this stage of LLM development; the technology is still maturing, still in its infancy.
I’m only talking about current iterations. No one here knows what the next iterations will be so we can’t comment on it.
Generally the more a technology matures out of its infancy the better it becomes at the job it’s designed for. If an AI is designed to be entertaining, then yes it will be better at that in time; but likewise also if it’s designed for factuals. And I already said what I think about the current state of development in regards to that.
Therefore, I think it’s a reasonable assumption that as time goes on, the frequency of hallucinations will go down. We’re still working out the kinks, as it is.
That being said, you’re not dumb; you just didn’t know.
And yeah it’s not perfect, not by a LONG shot, but I like it. I wouldn’t have ever given it a try if it wasn’t for DDG providing such an interface, and for free no less. (I’m broke. Lol.)
Rule or trend, whatever word you use is semantics at this point.
Hardly. There is a very clear distinction between a rule & a trend.
And your experience is irrelevant to the facts of how all current LLM’s are built. They are all built the same way. We have proof they are all built the same way.
They are not all built the same, though. Claude, for instance, is built with a framework of values called “Constitutional AI”. It’s not perfect, as the developers even state, but it is a genuine step in the right direction compared to many of its contemporaries in the AI space.
If you talk to someone and you know they lie to you 10% of the time, would you ever take anything they day at face value?
Humans are not tools that can be improved upon. They are sentient beings that have conscious choice. LLMs are the former, and are not the latter.

Haha, reminds me of my old truck I used to drive: a 1999 Ford Ranger with 6 cylinders but 1 cylinder broken but not sealed so it always had 1 cylinder constantly spewing (and thus wasting) gas, had no traction because the tires were worn down completely, the underside was rusted away almost completely, the transmission was fucked up, the coolant system was fucked so I had to keep an eye on it to make sure it didn’t overheat, and couldn’t reach highway speeds (62+ mph / 100+ kph) without jerking back & forth every second.
I'll never understand this kind of mindset. (lemmy.ml)
