F04118F,

Do you mean Safari?

Name one other browser that is not based on Chromium. If it is based on Chromium, it has to deal with what Google throws at them.

I say this as an enthusiastic Brave user. Brave is great at what it does currently, but the more terrible stuff Google builds into Chromium, the more patches they’ll have to maintain. This can make it harder to maintain their fork.

Worse than that, most Chromium-derivative users aren’t Brave users. Many web apps already don’t work as well with Firefox’ JavaScript Engine (Gecko) as they do with Chromium. This gives Google immense power.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromium_(web_browser))

F04118F,

Fair point, but the engine is important.

I understand their blog post, and if I were to build a browser today, I’d probably do the same.

But that doesn’t mean this situation isn’t problematic. It’s similar to car-centric infrastructure: in this situation, for any individual, choice X makes sense, but that will make the situation even worse for the whole population. A cumulation of many tiny Prisoner’s Dilemmas.

F04118F,

Excellent, I think you’ll love Arch. EndeavourOS provides a solid base with sane defaults. Having dracut set up out of the box prevents a lot of mistakes. Combining that with systemd-boot should be a reliable base.

F04118F,

Good points all! I think OP, like me, is not afraid of manually messing with config, reading archwiki and getting your hands dirty.

But I would’ve never looked at dracut when setting up Arch. I’m really happy Endeavour set that up for me. It’s nice to have a good base. Btw, thus dracut also meant I didn’t have to do anything with the mkinitcpio change you are linking. Although I was reading the wiki, forum, and looking forward to it.

Help deciding Os

Hi, I’m learning python and I have purchased a 2015 MacBook air. I want to install Linux on it (Ubuntu) but my friend who’s a developer told me to leave the MacOs because they are similar as operative systems. What do you think? Should I change the os and switch to Linux? Thanks. Edit: thank you for your replies. There are...

F04118F,

As a Python dev, I think I may understand your desire to get away from Windows. I have often encountered Python tools and frameworks that don’t work on Windows but do on Unix (Linux and MacOS), like Flask, but can’t recall seeing the other way around.

If:

  • Your laptop is still receiving security updates from Apple and is performing well,
  • And your main focus now is to learn Python

I would not mess with it and just stick with MacOS.

If your laptop is no longer supported or it is getting too slow, or if you want to play around with Linux, that would be a good reason to move away from MacOS.

F04118F,

Happy to help! Hope we all didn’t overwhelm you too much and see you in !python , !programming , !learnpython

I agree that Konsole are Kitty are both lovely terminals that are very configurable. Kitty for text file people vim enthusiasts and Konsole for GUI lovers.

By “questionable update policy”, do you mean that it is updated by the package manager when installed from official repositories but it has an auto-updater functionality for users installing it manually?

IIRC someone who compiled from source but didn’t set the flag/config to disable the auto-updater was surprised about that.

I don’t see the big deal of it to be honest. The vast majority of users will be installing through the package manager. If you compile from source, you can decide yourself whether you want it to auto-update. The whole point of compiling from source is the extra control, not the defaults, I’d guess. Unless you don’t know what you are doing and the package was not available for your distro and in that case, enabling auto-update by default even serves that user group.

That’s a Mastodon thread. This is Lemmy.

While Mastodon users can subscribe to Lemmy communities (such as this one: !linux or lemmy.ml/c/linux ) and see Lemmy posts in their feed, Lemmy users cannot normally comment on Mastodon threads.

F04118F,

Nice! I missed that.

So Lemmy communities have a third form:

  1. The URL format for non-Lemmings: instan.ce/c/community
  2. The Lemmy format for Lemmy clients: !community
  3. The Mastodon “tag” format: @community
F04118F,

I relate a bit. Like @DingoBilly, I have found something simple-tasting and nutricious that I can always eat when I don’t want to eat but know I should: meal shakes and bars. They are rodiculously complete (including every vitamin and mineral known), and come in various simple tastes (vanilla, chocolate, apple pie). My go-to brand is JimmyJoy. They’re also vegan. All you need is to mix (for shake) or drink (for bars) water with it. And have a toilet nearby as the fibre content is high. They’re not super cheap but they are super easy fast and healthy so it works for me. They also have a milky liquid form now. I think Huel is similar.

F04118F,

It is really running on a router. This particular router unit had a specific weird architecture that includes PCIE and thus makes it possible to plug in a graphics card. But the game is running on the actual router CPU, RAM and storage.

F04118F,

I was trying to do this, didn’t find the directory, figured out that mkinitcpio wasn’t installed. Turns out EndeavourOS set up dracut which means I don’t even have to do this. (Hides behind purple SDDM theme)

F04118F, (edited )

This is crazy!

What surprised me especially is that it was seemingly so simple to compile and boot a modern Linux kernel and graphics drivers for this obscure >10yo CPU.

F04118F,

I know what they mean, but: I run an immutable Linux distro on my phone that is maintained by Google. I’m sure more than 0.01% of Europe does the same.

I guess “FLOSS phone” doesn’t have the same ring to it as “Linux phone”

I agree that most currsnt fake leather is not durable enough. Many of the newest vegan leathers are made from plants. They still aren’t very durable, but at least they’re not plastic.

hope for a sort of ethical leather sourcing from animals who died of natural causes or had to be put down for medical reasons.

I appreciate the sentiment but even if everyone will have their pets flayed after they die (and they should die young enough for the leather to be of high quality), this won’t satisfy the global demand for leather.

My best guess (predicting the future is hard) for a proper solution is for plant-based or precision-fermented (or something else that is sustainable and has low energy needs) leathers to become better. To get there, they need R&D which costs money. So maybe buying very specific types of non-durable clothing is net positive, if it gets us closer to a good leather alternative.

Also, look up energy costs of production of plastic products vs plant-based. Plastic is not that bad for the environment if it is properly disposed of and not thrown straight into a river. I know plastic bags need many thousands of times less energy and water for production than cotton bags. Not sure how it is for leather but don’t just assume “plastic = bad”. It’s not that simple.

F04118F,

The plastic continent is (IIRC) for 98% compose of plastic that comes directly from a few big rivers in Asia, in countries that lack a functional waste disposal. As such, it is unrelated to plastic use in countries that do have a proper waste disposal.

Microplastics are a valid concern.

I also agree that the energy shortage is probably temporary, though it will get worse before it gets better. Land and water use will remain problems until we get past the tipping point for veganism. And animal-based leather will increase dramatically in price when dead cow consumption drops.

FYI I think you bring good arguments with a respectful tone and I’m not the one downvoting you.

I totally forgot! Which is ironic because the street I live is named something that translates to “stinky water”. It used to be a bit outside the city and was where leather was made hundreds of years ago. The water was smelly due to all the dirty chemicals involved. Leather production has always been a gross ordeal with dead skins and smelly chemicals. But it feels clean to us now. How weird is that??

(Tiny) breaking change [Sway 1.9] changes monitor output hex ID

I noticed this immediately because I use kanshi (highly recommended for laptops running sway!). I don’t know the how or why (maybe it’s the wlroots bump), but when I upgraded Sway to 1.9 today, the Hex ID form one of my external monitors changed. So I had to update it in the config for kanshi to work again....

F04118F,

Oh yeah I read that a few times too, haven’t tested yet. Is only local video impacted or can I browse YouTube to test?

F04118F,

FWIW, I just played a local mp4 video using VLC on Sway (1:1.9-1 from Arch repo), and this seems to have been fixed

F04118F,

NS made a loss

I am annoyed how this concept is so normalised that no one wonders anymore.

Should public rail be self-sufficient or is it a public good?

And how much was the loss of highways this year, compared to rail?

Never mind that highways encourage modes of transport that kill more people, both directly and indirectly.

F04118F,

Link to this instead: github.com/johnalanwoods/maintained-modern-unix

Why?

ibrahimdev’s collection is unmaintained and has a few issues. For starters, the second(!) tool in the list, exa, is unmaintained but has a maintained fork named eza. See this issue: github.com/ibraheemdev/modern-unix/pull/124

F04118F,

Waybar is styled using CSS. I just googled CSS character spacing and found this: developer.mozilla.org/en-US/…/letter-spacing

Let me know if you need any more specific pointers.

F04118F,

Looks great! I’ve been using a similar setup (Sway + Waybar + neovim) but on Arch.

I can live without animations but the lack of a blur option for transparent windows has me ogling SwayFX. I love my terminal semi-transparent. I use kitty for a terminal and have been playing with the extremely responsive and minimal tofi. Check it out, seems to match your vibe.
