FaceDeer

@FaceDeer@fedia.io

Basically a deer with a human face. Despite probably being some sort of magical nature spirit, his interests are primarily in technology and politics and science fiction.

Spent many years on Reddit and then some time on kbin.social.

They're not hallucinations. People are getting very sloppy with terminology. Google's AI is summarizing the content of web pages that search is returning, if there's weird stuff in there then that shows up in the summary.

The problem appears to be that the magazine deceptively portrayed it as an interview with the actual Michael Schumacher, rather than explaining that it was fictional. The lawsuit would probably be the same if the magazine had had a human writer come up with it all instead.

Well, your philosophy runs counter to the fundamentals of Western justice systems, then.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

No, you keep repeating this but it remains untrue no matter how many times you say it. An image generator is able to create novel images that are not directly taken from its training data. That's the whole point of image AIs.

Yeah, why aren't regular folks building reusable heavy-lift rocket systems?

This has been the opposite of my experience, unfortunately. I think the smaller population of the Fediverse seems to result in a more insular community. I see the same names cropping up in many disparate communities, whereas on Reddit I never bothered learning usernames because I rarely met the same people twice.

I also get downvoted a lot more here, which was rare on Reddit. I haven't consciously changed my opinions or writing style, and I am still active on Reddit as well, so I don't think it's just me.

Yes, and I'm saying there's nothing wrong with that "buzz word." It's accurate, just more generic.

I see a lot of people these days raising objections that LLMs and whatnot "aren't really artificial intelligence!" Because they're operating from the definition of artificial intelligence they got from science fiction TV shows, where it's not AI unless it replicates or exceeds human intelligence in all meaningful ways. The term has been widely used in computer science for 70 years, though, applying to a broad range of subjects. Machine learning is clearly within that range.

Cows are not all fed on grain. A lot of cows are ranched on land that would not be suitable for growing grain crops.

Doubt this one scored a Hugo nomination like Space Raptor Butt Invasion did. Cheap attempt to ride its coattails to popularity.

Re-light Starship engines, achieve stable orbit (they deliberately cut the engines just a few meters per second shy of it on IFT-3, there's no reason not to count it), and transfer propellant (one of IFT-3's test routines during its almost-orbit was transferring propellant between internal tanks).

Pointless vandalism. The original comments are already archived, this will accomplish nothing except make Google results even worse for people.

One estimate of a solar geoengineering program's cost was $2.5 billion per year. Well within the national budget of many countries that would be significantly impacted by climate change. Presumably at some point one of them will just unilaterally give it a try.

The founding fathers also kept slaves and didn't let women vote. I'm tired of how Americans deify them, I suggest citing economists as authorities on economics instead of 18th century wealthy landowners.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

I mean, LLMs already are prime time. They're capable of tons of stuff. Even if they don't gain a single new ability from here onward they're still revolutionary and their impact is only just becoming apparent. They don't need to become AGI.

So speculating that they "may never be ready for prime time" is just dumb. Perhaps he's focused on just one specific application.

In terms of what matters most in finally achieving financial stability, 42% say it would take spending less money than they make

It baffles me what the remaining 58% think.

FaceDeer,

Shouldn't the bond already be paid, though? If they won't accept an IOU from Trump himself why are they accepting an IOU from someone on his behalf?

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

You're rooting for a revolutionary new technology to fail rather than get better. I'd call that wrong.

If nothing else, AI is never going to get worse than it is now. So if that's intolerably bad for you then improvement is the only way out.

The reason it worked is because sometimes burnout is a real problem, and getting extra help is a real solution. The fact that this was exploited in one situation doesn't mean that all of a sudden there isn't any real burnout or genuine offers to help any more.

A project can sometimes benefit from help even if there is no burnout. People have limits.

Appeals Court Bails Trump Out of Having to Post Massive Fraud Bond (www.rollingstone.com)

Donald Trump was supposed to have to post a $464 million bond by Monday or else the state of New York could begin collecting on the massive civil fraud judgment leveled against him earlier this year. An appeals court bailed him out, blocking collection of the judgment and giving the former president 10 days to post a drastically...

So what you're "doing about it" is giving up and going away.

And people wonder why Republicans keep winning.

Unless you specify that you want a talented output. A lot of people don't realize that you need to tell AIs what kind of output you want them to give you, if you don't then they'll default to something average. That's the cause of a lot of disappointment with tools like ChatGPT.

Sounds like we need to get the SCP Foundation involved. I'm getting some serious Turn Down for What vibes from this.

Biden backs Schumer after senator calls for new elections in Israel (apnews.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden expressed support Friday for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer after the senator called for new elections in Israel, the latest sign that the U.S. relationship with its closest Middle East ally is careening toward fracture over the war in Gaza....

Since Israel's stated goal is the elimination of Hamas regardless of cost or consequence, even to civilians, that means US efforts to support civilians runs contrary to what Israel wants.

So you do mean their goal is eliminating the civilian population of Gaza, then. That is the direct result of the goal as you describe it, there's no ambiguity or "well maybe a few will survive" waffling.

Let US Service members get attacked by Israel, maybe they'll learn something from hitting someone capable of seriously hitting them back.

Study finds American trust in scientific expertise survived polarization and previous administration's attack on science (phys.org)

A new analysis shows that trust in scientific expertise among the American public remained high during the last six decades and that the Trump administration attacks on scientific expertise did not modify the basic confidence of Americans in science and scientific expertise....

FaceDeer,

So a scientific study finds that people still trust science, and your reaction is to disbelieve that study based on your personal feelings.

Ironic.

City streets were intensely filthy back in the days of horses.

They require a constant input of hay.

They're "self driving" in the worst possible way - they can run off on their own and do whatever they want, and have little understanding of the rules of the road. People already freak out when a robotaxi takes an inadvertent wrong turn, horses can freak out and try to kill pedestrians.

They're slow. They're hard to manage. If you don't want to be exposed to the elements then you'll have to build carriages, so you'll still have factories and whatnot. Horses eventually just up and die regardless of how well you care for them.

Horses are not better than cars.
