FaceDeer,

Most will probably fail or suck, but as long as one good one comes out of it we'll have at least broken even.

Heh. I wonder if a federated model would work for torrent sites, too.

FaceDeer,

Thirded. My main comment was going to be "an interface more like Old Reddit please" but these two points (the "low density" and the unclear nesting of comments) are really the core of the problem I'm having with it.

I'll probably encounter more as I experiment more with actually doing stuff, but visually speaking those are front and center for me.

FaceDeer,

We may have to wait a few years for the books to be published to find out. I actually think things seem to be progressing according to what feels like an optimal plan; wait for Bakhmut to finally finish falling, then immediately start hitting them with the potential encirclement of Bakhmut and simultaneously invade Belgorod to force Russia to spread its forces everywhere trying to cling defensively to those places. Then once their forces are committed, find the place they weakened to "pay" for those reinforcements and hammer that with the counteroffensive.

Maybe they had other plans and this is just what they wound up with, but it seems decent to me.

FaceDeer,

Depends on the details of the splintering, for me. The Fediverse seems like a good way to splinter - everything's free and open, but there are shared protocols that allow for interoperability and discoverability.

anders, to lemmy

Lemmy is booming

I have never before received so many reactions and comments on my Lemmy posts before, so it's obvious to see, that there are many new members here.
Welcome to all the new! And I'm looking forward to see more of you here.
Cheers!

FaceDeer,

One of the benefits of the federated model is that instances can fragment into smaller islands if things get too awful being part of the main continent. Though that's also a downside, IMO.

FaceDeer,

Indeed, Reddit can do the "fragmentation" thing as well. But the big difference is that you can never escape the admins, all subreddits are ultimately under the same top bosses. And you can't "defederate" with, say, /r/conservative to effectively cause everyone over there to cease to exist as far as your own subreddit is concerned.

Whether this is better or worse is going to be interesting to see play out.

US's Blinken says no to any Ukraine peace deal that doesn't include total Russian withdrawal (apnews.com)

“We believe the prerequisite for meaningful diplomacy and real peace is a stronger Ukraine, capable of deterring and defending against any future aggression,” Blinken said in a speech in Finland, which recently became NATO’s newest member and shares a long border with Russia.

FaceDeer,

I expect that Ukraine is also saying "no" to any peace deal that doesn't include total Russian withdrawal.

I would interpret a statement like this from the US as meaning "we're not going to lean on the Ukrainians to accept any sort of compromise that they're not already interested in accepting," which is perfectly fine IMO.

FaceDeer,

Not so much a question, as a couple of comments. One is of course a hearty thank you to the devs who've put so much work into creating something like this. Long ago I was an avid Usenetter, and while Reddit replicates a lot of the feel of Usenet its underlying structure is tragically centralized and closed. Lemmy feels a lot more like the Usenet of old and I would be very happy seeing it take off.

The other is: you've got a month left to iron out as many kinks as possible. :) The real flood isn't going to start until Reddit actually shuts off those APIs, because humans are lazy and I bet most just clicked through the announcement their third-party app gave them and figured they'd worry about it later. I've seen threads on Reddit where there was a lot of odd negativity about Lemmy and a lot of it seemed to come down to a confusing interface or stylistic complaints, those seem like things that can be addressed in a hurry and might be worth focusing on. I'm brand new here myself so I'll see if I can spot some to comment about more specifically in the future, but I'm sure you've got a backlog with that sort of thing in it anyway.

And if Reddit ultimately bans NSFW content, as they keep seeming to be edging towards, the flood will become a deluge. But that will likely be a separate phase of their enshittification process than the API thing, so who knows when that will be.

FaceDeer,

No idea, I'm afraid. And I'm happy that this is going to go down in my personal history as the first response I've received to a Lemmy comment. :)
