Maduro orders the 'immediate' exploitation of oil, gas and mines in Guyana's Essequibo (apnews.com)

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Tuesday directed the country’s state-owned companies to “immediately” begin to explore and exploit the oil, gas and mines in Guyana’s Essequibo region, a territory larger than Greece and rich in oil and minerals that Venezuela claims as its own....

FlickOfTheBean,

With who’s army fighting though? Guyana seems a bit too small to properly be able to defend itself from Venezuela… Unless Brazil goes full on South America police on the situation (and apparently, they might?), I don’t see how this will end in anything other than Venezuela steam rolling Guyana…

FlickOfTheBean,

Fascinating, that hadn’t crossed my mind at all. The actual world police could do something probably good (stabilizing at the very least) for the situation.

But that said, I don’t think I would bank on the UN for this one… It seems like Guyana would need continual military presence to dissuade Venezuela because it appears that Venezuela is doing this because Guyana was too fiscally successful over the pandemic. But I mean if the UN does long term guarding like that, then it might be a viable option…

FlickOfTheBean,

The unfortunate answer to your question is very likely only because there is money to be made…

Ohio Senate Republicans propose banning home grown marijuana and other changes to legal marijuana (www.pbs.org)

Banning marijuana growing at home, increasing the substance’s tax rate and altering how those taxes get distributed are among vast changes Ohio Senate Republicans proposed Monday to a marijuana legalization measure approved by voters last month....

FlickOfTheBean,

And they have the public so disenfranchised that the public’ll just go “fucking politicians” and move on with their lives instead of grabbing the torch and pitchforks and showing these assholes what accountability for politicians used to look like in the old days. Perhaps show them why we don’t play by those rules anymore and why they shouldn’t inspire the public to continue playing by those old rules.

Note: I am euphemistically edging towards tar and feathering more so than anything else. Anything nonlethal but severe in nature and consequence, that sort of thing.

FlickOfTheBean,

Ahhhh sheesh you definitely got me there… In that case I’d like to revise my stance to be a bit safer and reduce it to just gluing the feathers to them using Elmer’s or something safer than skin peeling tar :/

Something scary and mob actiony but that doesn’t result in inevitable death.

FlickOfTheBean,

I mistook the boots as docs and the shoes are Nike… I’m layman level though, and there does appear to be a difference between designer and branding that I don’t fully understand… Though it appears to be even though you may recognize the brand, the brand itself may not be designer (is that about right? You obviously know more than me, so feel free to tell me I’m wrong!)

FlickOfTheBean,

Oh I see! That’s far fancier than anything I’ve really ever even imagined lol i thought Louis Vuitton was designer but that would mean the designers name is just the brand… Which is interesting to see! Thank you for enlightening me!

FlickOfTheBean,

Memes are serious fuckin bsns.

Can’t have subpar memes in MY community lmao

Jokes aside, hope your memes find better traction!

FlickOfTheBean,

History is written by the victors, and that is what a win looks like… Not saying it’s deserved, just why that happened that way.

FlickOfTheBean,

Christ Almighty this is the dystopian software future that my college computer science ethics professor was working so hard to delay.

FlickOfTheBean,

That’s a fair perspective, but most people strive for as few clicks between users and their targets as possible. Forcing a user to become semi-tech-competent by sending them on a fetch quest to figure out their os, while not an inherently bad thing, does work against this overall goal…

Idk, it’s like education vs service industry goal setting, that’s all I’m trying to get at here lol

Edit: plus, there’s no guarantee that it will remain just the big 3 for forever. There was a time before Linux, maybe we’ll see a time after windows… Unlikely, but one can dream lol

FlickOfTheBean,

Does anyone really go to jail for wage theft though? Especially at the same severity that walking out with $100 till bucks would?

From my perspective, it seems like the boss gets a slap on the wrist the first time, while the worker gets fired and carted off to jail the first time.

I think that’s the point of this meme, but there are some nuances involved (aka why does the law treat these people differently? I think there may be a reason having to do with intent here, but that is discussion outside of the scope of what this meme is getting at.)

FlickOfTheBean,

Tldr; you’re ineffectual and always will be until you drop your holier than thou ways :)

Ahh yes working with what works is the same as liking genocide. Very astute. You do know you sound like a petulant child right now, yeah?

You’re the type of kid who can’t answer the trolly problem because, in the end, someone gets hurt. There’s nothing wrong with feeling the way you do, but being a judgemental whiny bitch about it is not how you get people to work together.

FlickOfTheBean,

Too bad their doctrine is to take everyone else with them, instead of being as courteous as the cults that self annihilate and leave the non-followers alone.

Seriously, their own book says man was charged with taking care of the world. By their own doctrine, God is the one that will end it, not man. But they’re all either power hungry greed lords trying to take Gods destiny into their own hands or idiots who don’t know what’s in the book they thump so hard.

FlickOfTheBean,

General left of center demonization. This person is lamenting the pattern that will likely continue that consists of things less left than communism (in this case, socialism) being treated as equally “scary” or “nefarious” as communism, in the McCarthy era Red Scare definitions of scary/nefarious (unless I’m misreading, but that seems to be what’s happening here)

FlickOfTheBean,

And we should loudly continue to compare them to those with those histories due to similarity of behavior until they change their behavior so that they will never have the chance to quietly add a similar history to their own books.

If we don’t want a “gulags of Florida” chapter written in history, it’s appropriate to call the behavior that would lead to one out

FlickOfTheBean,

Oh i get what you’re pointing out now, yeah, it is kinda weird to just assume all leftists are pro-lgbtqia.

It seems like every combination of person, no matter how seemingly contradictory vibes-wise, exists in some form or another lol

Like it’s weird, I am doing the same lumping pattern that I know I shouldn’t be in the same breath as acknowledging that it’s weird to do that pattern lol cognitive dissonance is weird when you notice it…

FlickOfTheBean,

Tbh at this point I’m convinced articles like this are just life support trying to claw back as many Musk dick riders back into normies.

It’s good work, and I think it should be done, but yeah, this is exactly what a sane person would expect to see given all the context.

It’s not news to most, but to the audience that I think this sort of thing is going after, it genuinely might be news to them.

Not that this article alone would get anyone to drop their fanboy bs, but it seems like it’s intended to be a tool to facilitate that. As for why it’s here specifically in world news, probably in case anyone wants to use it as a facilitation tool for anyone in their lives. Can’t use what you don’t know exists and all that lol

FlickOfTheBean,

It’s like a smaller, slightly more convenient walkman

FlickOfTheBean,

…if that’s the case, why do professors exist in this day and age with so many books? Why don’t we have a scholar system in reality if books should be enough for people to learn?

Like, if you’ve ever had a good teacher before, they’re not JUST regurgitating info, they’re connecting it to the wider context that currently surrounds you, aka your daily lived life (at least in a lot of cases, I’m sure there are many flavors of what makes a teacher better than an info regurgitator, but this is a solid one that I personally know of)

Teachers, while they may suck or not have the ability to be good for whatever reason, are not supposed to be just information spewing robots.

FlickOfTheBean,

(before I begin my ramble, I understand this is pedantic as hell and nitpicky af. Please know that I’m not calling this meme bad, I’m only looking for someone who is willing to be pedantic about definitions with me for a few rounds or so.)

What exactly does “false solidarity” mean? What exactly is this particular understanding of solidarity either? To my knowledge (aka, I googled it to ensure my vibe check of what solidarity meant was about right), solidarity is something you feel and are essentially motivated to solidarity actions by. To feel it is to experience it, which means, by my understanding of what solidarity is, the term “false solidarity” seems nonsensical.

Like I know what you’re saying, I agree, the effect is that the worker works against his own interest for the betterment of the upper classes, but this phrasing seems… I don’t know exactly how to put it, but like inexact in a way that can probably be and should probably be fixed.

I would just call it poisonous solidarity (intentionally avoiding virus/illness words though) or something that simultaneously implies that it’s externally put there by an external actor, it’s bad for you, it can hurt things and people around you, but it still is legitimate solidarity. Those actions those workers are taking, those votes that they’re casting, those are all real actions caused by real feelings. Implying the feelings themselves are false seems to me to be lazy and irrational at this point… If this were the late 1800s, that probably would be the best phrasing we had for this at the time, but language evolves and I don’t think this language is illustrative/metaphorical enough to accurately portray the mechanics that our current culture allows us to portray about subjects like this.

But again, I’m not the arbiter of what’s true, correct, or what actually should happen, so what do you people think?

FlickOfTheBean,

Ah I think either I missed your point completely or you missed my point a bit.

Buzzwords are the entire vector used in delivering the message.

My question boils down to: Why use inefficient propaganda? Just because an old book used a particular phrase?

Memes are propaganda, and all I’m trying to say is that this could be done a very tiny bit better.

Giving up on the languages used is essentially giving up on the people who you want on your side… Isn’t it?

As for your last point, I appear to be a dingus! Lol, what do you mean by “solidarity should only be for your economics class”?

Does the truth of a matter hold no value unless it gets shit done? Like, is your angle that it doesn’t matter whether the feeling is real or not, so long as it’s not productive to “our” (but who is we/our/etc all that pedantic bs etc etc) goals, it’s justified in being called false? And if that is your position, does that not alienate people who have particularly strict measures for what constitutes something as true vs false/how would that be justified? (Then again, if I’ve mistaken what you meant by that line, this entire bit will probably make no sense, so if it seems like I’m way off base, please feel absolutely free to just ignore this whole section lol I like talking but not fighting, but I worry I may not come off that way here… So apologies in advance if that is the case)

FlickOfTheBean,

I would advise fighting for equity to mean “distribution of resources to enable equal opportunity” rather than “capitalism with a diversity coating”

If you allow people to use the term incorrectly, you’re allowing the term to grow/evolve into a meaning that harms the ability to accurately convey the concept you’re trying to describe.

So with all that said, to respond to your question: Perhaps you’ve seen it used that way. That is not what equity means though.

FlickOfTheBean,

I also have ADHD and a chattery mind! Running works for you, so defs don’t stop! But I have an issue with the meditation issue, and I think you think that way because they didn’t tell you that it’s totally normal for your mind to wander, the only difference is that your mind will wander more. You’re doing nothing wrong, that’s just what minds do, even neurotypical ones, just to a lesser degree than what you experience.

All you have to do is guide your mind back to focusing on whatever meditation you’re doing with an endless kindness and compassion that you would have for like some adorable puppy or baby that’s trying to wander away. They don’t mean to do wrong, but they also can’t be reasoned with. you just have to guide them back to the right place.

With all that said, if it’s still a bunch of contrived hippie sounding bs to you, feel free to disregard! Running works, and it’s also not like this is super important for you to try out or anything like that.

I think meditation does have legit benefits, I just don’t think it’s often taught with that compassion angle that I think makes it possible for people with ADHD to do it. And even if what I’m doing is not “real” meditation, whatever it is, it’s an extended moment of niceness.
