I've packed my suitcase for ConFuzzled so now I need to decide which pieces of technology I want to put in my backpack

Do I bring my actual, useful laptop? Do I bring my anachronistic Windows 3.11/9x netbook? Do I bring my iPAQ or my Clié or both??

This is so difficult

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@Ninji You should definitely bring at least 1 thinkpad

I've realised something — I don't actually hate :java: Java™, I just struggle with Spring

Am I just too old-fashioned of an engineer?? Spring seems to be really popular so clearly they must be doing something right, but every time I do anything with it, I end up wanting to quit dev and become a farmer

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@Ninji I've struggled so much with Spring sometimes. It's doing a lot of stuff that's just straight-up bad practice imo, obscuring a lot of logic, and you end up with very mysterious error messages.

It's actually not going to big cities that made me realize how shit Hungary is. It's going to a small Italian city that made me realize this.

Like, if you saw a nice looking train station in Amsterdam, you wouldn't be surprised. But imagine seeing a nice train station at Driebergen-Zeist that looks nicer than any station in Budapest, and you'll immediately feel sad about the state of your country.

I'm on an AA Boeing 777 and the rather modern in-flight entertainment system has a port that looks like some 90s proprietary AV connector. Does anyone know what this is for?

The in flight entertainment system in question

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@karpour Based on a Google image search, the port looks exactly like a SEGA Genesis A/V port. But it might not be that...

I had a dream that I was on a train and the ticket inspector asked me for my railcard, and then the TrainPal app wouldn’t let me display my railcard until I filled in details and registered a fraudulent company

I… I don’t know what this signifies

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@Ninji I think it signifies your desire to register a fraudulent company

Or it's about your fear that you won't be able to show your tickets on your phone

When I was on the train, the person in front of me was wearing a "my social battery" pin, with a slider to adjust the levels.

When searching for it, I also found an electronic version with colored LEDs, which is when I realized "I have a badger2040, I could make an app for it"

So after 1 hour and 15 minutes of coding, this happened:

New (probably contentious) blog post: Free Software that you can't customise is not truly Free Software
https://wuffs.org/blog/free-software-needs-to-be-customisable

Being able to modify and adapt your software is one of the grounding principles of FOSS, but I think we've lost sight of that

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@Ninji I don't think it's lost. There are lots of cases of FOSS being modified and customized.

For example, lots of distros apply patches to many of their packages before compiling. And whenever a FOSS refuses to incorporate some changes, there's always a chance it gets forked.

For example, when NewPipe refused to integrate SponsorBlock, it got a forked version which has SB. youtube-dl has a forked version called yt-dlp with lots of extra features. Codium is a "fork" of VSCode with all the closed source stuff removed. I'm currently typing this on Husky, a forked version of Tusky.

Sure, it might not be you modifying the source code, but the possibility is there. And if enough people want it, it happens. Sadly it's often time consuming and not practical to deviate from the "mainline", so I see your argument. But you can always use software that has good customization, so I don't really think this is a big issue.

Sounds kinda sus but what do I know :///

my local McDonald’s has a menu above the counter that renders across 5 monitors, and one of them is out of sync so badly that it was showing the breakfast menu at 8:45 PM

i’m scared to know how this happens. are there multiple computers just to run the menu???

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@Ninji Probably. I know that at KFC, I saw an RPi plugged into the back of one of the monitors. And sometimes it'd display a message if you want to refresh Iceweasel cuz you haven't opened it in a while
