Why is regging for cons so painful? Normally you should be looking forward for things like this, like a pre-order of a game or a new tv show. But con reg for NFC (which is first come first serve) was painful.

I didn't get main, and had to make the hard choice of going for another hotel and leaving the main's waiting list. Even though I regged in 2 and a half minutes, the 320 rooms vanished in what seems like moments after reg opened.

I guess I could've been worse. 1 person regged in a minute, and 30 minutes later got the feedback that they didn't get main and now they can't even get into an overflow hotel.

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@Ninji I tried regging quickly, but the server was so painfully slow. Autofill data took 10 seconds to come in, and I also wasted a bit of time not understanding the UI. So I wonder if I was just a tiny bit faster, then maybe I would've gotten in

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@Ninji Any tips for regging quickly? (besides having fast Internet and being lucky)

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@Ninji I guess it's possible that that 1 second of me adding the excursion added to the approval time, and if I didn't do that I might've gotten main, now that I think about it

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@Ninji I guess only people familiar with the backend would be able to say anything certain about it.

From what I've seen reg is all over the place. Apparently there were people who regged later than me but still got main, and people who regged earlier than me who didn't. I guess there is a room lottery system after all

So I checked out bsky, and while it's nice to not have ads (which will be there as soon as they need to make money), I definitely prefer Mastodon. People write more thoughtful posts and engage in more discussion here. Things posted don't disappear into the void a few minutes after they're posted. Also I have no faith in bsky ever doing actual federation.

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

@karpour I've actually seen 1 person say "I hope Bsky never federates" cuz of all the defederation drama. It'd be really weird if Bsky doesn't implement their big main feature that's advertised on the home page, I see a non zero chance of them doing it

Celebrate European by pedaling into a sustainable future 🚴‍♀️💚

In 2022, bicycle production in the EU increased by 10%, with a record-breaking 14.7 million of bikes produced.

Cycling not only protects your health but also serves as an eco-friendly alternative to driving, curbing air pollution.

Do you know which country is the biggest producer of bikes? ↓

Visit https://MobilityWeek.eu for more information on how you can contribute to a greener world.

@EU_Commission I guess when you have more bicycles than people, you don't need to make any

Gauss,

@Ninji You take the left toilet paper, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.

You take the right toilet paper, you stay in wonderland, and I show you how deep the butthole goes.

Travelling by train in Europe should be silky smooth.

From pan-European corridors to interregional connections, we have helped build greener and sustainable ways into .

And we are up for more:

🚊 Today, we earmarked more than €52 million to support the purchase of 37 electric for 13 interregional routes in Romania.

🚆 This month, we allocated €411 million to help build two sections of Spain’s Murcia-Almería high-speed railway.

Gauss,

@EU_Commission That's great and all, but we really need rail travel regulation to be on par with air travel. That means:

  • Price transparency
  • Centralized booking system (especially important for connecting trains)
  • Compensation if you miss your connection due to delays (such as free re-booking, and free hotel if you have to stay overnight)

All these are standard for air travel, they should apply to train travel too

I signed up for LinkedIn two months ago, and in that time, I’ve received over 310 different emails from them

All I ultimately got out of it was two calls with recruiters that never went anywhere— the job I ended up landing was one I applied for independently

So much for the professional network :p

Gauss,
@Gauss@furry.engineer avatar

Me dunking on social media platforms:

Facebook: Zucc's clever trick of stalking on uni students got a little out of hand

Instagram: Facebook for basic millennials

TikTok: 90% garbage, while the good 10% gets reposted on other platforms

YouTube: The platform that can copystrike you for beatboxing a song for 3 seconds, but can't figure out how to filter extremely obvious spam comments

Twitter: The place where people act like it wasn't a dumpster fire before Elon took over

Reddit: They killed the only thing that made it usable, while driving away the people who make it useful

Threads: Oh you thought Mastodon is irrelevant?

BlueSky: These people created a better Mastodon, then made it invite only while forgetting half the features

LinkedIn: The only time you'll use it is when looking for a job, or looking for a new employee

Discord: This platform ruined the word "server" for an entire generation. Also it's not a wiki, please stop using it as one
