@eonity Well this is the day I changed my default search engine, bye Google. Honestly, the search experience has already been really bad for quite a while anyway.

@ncommander I remember thinking that, and then filling up all 8TB. I'm up to a new 18TB NAS now with the option of extending to 40TB. Turns out I like archiving.

My flight was a bit late yesterday, allowing me to have this great view of a sunset over Vienna :)

it took me four months to read through this collection of essays, stories, interviews and written thoughts from hayao miyazaki, and it was absolutely worth reading it slowly.

about half of the book are conversations about how-it-was-made or reflections on characters like Nausicaä. they're interesting for anime-manga aficionados, artists and animators.

but what stood out to me most reading Starting Point was miyazaki's ability to think. he thinks non-reductively, without ever turning to either lazy idealism or pragmatism. there are moments where it is clear he has read social theory, but the ideas are always expressed as everyday, grounded experiences - and not floaty/cloudy/tangled academic musings.

he just thinks, out loud, a lot. this is someone whose entire day is consumed by thinking, and animation just happens to be one of the creative practices involved in expressing the thoughts for other people.

this is not something depicted in any documentary i've seen about studio ghibli - which tend to focus on his personality, emotions and production process.

Does anyone know some cool retro computer locations around Dallas? Like museums or thrift/surplus stores? I know I'm too late for Computer Reset :P

I'm on an AA Boeing 777 and the rather modern in-flight entertainment system has a port that looks like some 90s proprietary AV connector. Does anyone know what this is for?

Hey everybody. I'm at the internet archive headquarters all day. Tell me something you want to picture of and I'll do my best to supply. Where I can, I'll include a capsule description of what you're looking at as well.

@textfiles Computer chronicles tapes! I got photos of all the tapes on "Pallet 1" and processed them, see here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15p5sv4y8jXVnXqH62VDBbwZ1MEF2C81XyCnNB3vkOs4/edit?usp=sharing

Not sure if the Pallets are numbered, but I think there's 3 of them?

The first and second time I caught COVID couldn't have been more different, and the reason is vaccines. First time was 2 days before I had my vaccine appointment, and it resulted in 2 horrible weeks of sickness + 8 months of long covid. This time I would never have noticed if I hadn't tested. No COVID symptoms whatsoever, most importantly no loss of smell. Vaccines work!

GASP

it took 20 years, but i finally got my dream minidisc player: a Sony MZ-S1 Sports NetMD. 🤯

a neighbour down the street listed it for sale "untested" which usually means 'i tested it and it's broken'.

i gambled and bought it on sight. i practically ran home like a 9 year old just to put it through its paces, and it is perfect. 😆

the build quality is rugged and beautiful throughout. many of the surfaces are rubberized with a polymer that is still soft (and hasn't broken down). the curvilinear surfaces feel so good in the hand, makes you want to hold it. the pearlescent white finish hasn't even yellowed yet (!)

instead of a jog dial, you get a mini thumbstick which rests surprisingly well under the thumb. the deep orange display of the Sports S2 line has always been a favourite of mine - something no other company did.

i can't wait to load up SonicStage on my iMac and start transferring music :D
failing that, i'll be using WebMiniDisc to transfer music in-browser

Here is a screenshot of Yahoo! in 1995, also a screenshot of Windows CE Beta 4 with the Yahoo! website from internal Microsoft materials. The CE screenshot seems somewhat odd. the MSN logo does seem to be edited in, and the whole layout is not the same as in the other screenshot.

Does anyone happen to have some binding rings with the EUROP standard lying around and could spare one or two?

These have 24 rings and are not made anymore, rather than the US standard, which is 21 rings. I would need 10mm diameter (slightly bigger works too)
