If you held on to your eclipse glasses, take a look at the sun today. The biggest sunspots in decades are visible. They're producing huge solar flares, meaning radio disruptions and auroras here on Earth.

Well, if it has to be Monday, you may as well have a baby Black-necked Stilt to enjoy (from the Bear Creek Unit of the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge Complex).

https://geotripperbirds.blogspot.com/2024/04/my-rare-bird-jinx-and-roseate-spoonbill.html It's not every day that you get to see a bird that has only previously been seen in Central California only once. I'm usually jinxed.

We've been watching a little Great Horned Owl growing up along the Tuolumne River for the last month or so.

Thrilled to find a Lewis's Woodpecker on the Tuolumne River Trail today. It's only the second time I've ever seen one here.

I don't get to see totality, but a partial eclipse is interesting nonetheless, especially when there are a few sunspots in the mix.

https://geotripperbirds.blogspot.com/2024/03/a-trilogy-of-mostly-black-birds-at-bear.html We had another delightful afternoon exploring one of the Great Valley's wildlife refuges. It was a day for black birds of several kinds...

https://geotripperbirds.blogspot.com/2024/03/tracking-elusive-yellow-headed.html Yellow-headed Blackbirds are both beautiful and elusive in our region of California. We lucked out last weekend at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge!

The nice thing about our flat valley (the Great Valley of California)...when weather actually happens the sky is very big.

The Red Hills are turning yellow! If you don't know of them, they are a serpentine soil biome in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Chinese Camp. Lots of rare and endemic plant species and a fish (the Red Hills Roach) found nowhere else in the world.

https://geotripper.blogspot.com/2024/03/the-end-of-tuolumne-river-its-not-as.html There's a precious resource about to be unveiled in Stanislaus County, California's newest state park! It's the end of the Tuolumne River, but that's a good thing.

https://geotripper.blogspot.com/2024/03/whats-most-awesome-thing-youve-ever.html Are you on the fence, deciding if you want to try to see the Solar eclipse next month? I can't this time, but here's my argument about why it's worth your time: it may be one of the most awesome moments of your life. Follow the link for my '91 experience.

I spend a lot of time taking my students out into the field to explore the fantastic geology all across the western US and around the world. Unfortunately, most our students struggle with finances, and often can't afford our trips.

If you have a few bucks to share, we have a scholarship fund with the MJC Foundation where you can help them out. Follow the link for a quick and easy way to donate! Our students will appreciate it more than you will ever know!

What's that joke about birdwatchers? That they spend their time looking for Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers? Well, I had the singular experience of seeing one on the campus of CSU Stanislaus today! The first for me personally, and only about the 5th one ever sighted in Stanislaus County.

Enjoying the rise of the full Moon on the bluffs above the Tuolumne River, I chanced on a plane crossing the face of the Moon. The tree-covered ridge in the moonrise photo was in the Sierra Nevada about 40 miles away.
