GingerKun,

In addition to CSAM being illegal almost everywhere, it is also objectively morally abhorrent and should be shunned. There is no other possible stance to take.

GingerKun,

They said sensitive professions, including doctors, journalists, lawyers, judges and MPs, would not be legitimate targets.

…unless they magically get accused of an unrelated crime!

GingerKun,

You can check yourself here: beehaw.org/instances and here: vlemmy.net/instances

But both instances list each other as connected.

Have you checked your subscriptions feed to see if posts are actually coming through? The pending status is functionally the same as the subscribed status from the user perspective.

GingerKun,

Make sure the thumb is outside the fingers :)

OC The fediverse is a privacy nightmare (blog.bloonface.com)

ActivityPub, the protocol that powers the fediverse (including Mastodon – same caveats as the first two times, will be used interchangeably, deal with it) is not private. It is not even semi-private. It is a completely public medium and absolutely nothing posted on it, including direct messages, can be seen as even remotely...

GingerKun,

It seems a lot worse than that… At least somebody would have to hack a 90s forum to see your DMs.

Will this instance be joining the fedipact?

I’ve been hearing that Meta (Facebook) intends to join the fediverse. I have some very big concerns about that, as do apparently many others. There exists a group of instances called the fedipact which will not be federating with Meta, and I was wondering if this instance would be joining. So there is no ambiguity with this...

GingerKun,

I don’t want Meta or the Zuck to benefit in any way from any work I do posting on the fediverse.

Gaggia Classic Evo Pro In-Depth Overview: Upgrades, Performance Tests, How To Use (vlemmy.net)

The Gaggia Classic Pro Evo is out! Click here for a full review. This is a 2023 revision on the much loved Gaggia Classic Pro which also punched far above its price class. The Evo is around $500. If you’re looking for a deal, now might be a good time to snatch up a refurbished unit of the older model. I found one for $375 with...

GingerKun,

What’s your favorite color? I’d have to go with cherry red, but white is also tempting.

GingerKun,

As somebody who owns no physical synths, I am very interested in what others say! I think for me on the software side, Helm has almost infinite possibilities/parameters and I would never run out of things to try.

Addiction in my family’s life

Hi everyone, my name is loopy and I created this lemmy community to make a space for people to share and support each other through the challenges of having a friend or family member struggling with addiction. As the sidebar says, this is not to replace therapy; think of it like an online support group....

GingerKun,

I lost a cousin to addiction and schizophrenia after I helped him finish his GED. It sucked because he was born addicted from his birth mother. I feel like I did a pretty good job giving him some freedom while not enabling. For example, I took him to the grocery store and paid for his whole cart without telling him what to buy, following him around, or handing him cash. He had a social worker too, but he skipped town and didn’t transfer his medicaid.

I had already learned through previous experiences that you can’t let yourself feel responsible for other people’s choices from having a friend who was suicidal and self-harming. She survived without any major attempts, thankfully, but I worried a lot before I came to that realization.

Because I’d learned that life lesson, I was better equipped for this cousin.

GingerKun,

I was eyeing the Infinite DLC episodes set in pre-apocalypse Rapture because the season pass is only $5 but I haven’t even played the base game or Bioshock 1 and 2. My brain is broken! 🫠

GingerKun,

I mean yeah they scavenge but their diet has a lot of bugs, especially ticks.

YSK: Signal is a great secure private messenger app comparable to others on the market. (restoreprivacy.com)

“When you use Signal, your data is stored in encrypted form on your devices. The only information that is stored on the Signal servers for each account is the phone number you registered with, the date and time you joined the service, and the date you last logged on.”...

GingerKun,

Basically, it makes the whole platform less secure because you could accidentally send a non-encrypted message at any time. With SMS-free Signal, at least mistaken sent messages are still E2E encrypted.

Is their goal to become the new de-facto messaging app? Or is their goal to become the most secure messaging app for whistle blowers, etc for whom a single mistake could mean losing their life or their freedom?

GingerKun,

I don’t want my VPN provided by spooky Microsoft and attached to my Microsoft account.

GingerKun,

Especially rate-limiting your users that love Twitter enough to pay for it. If I were paying for Twitter (I deactivated last year), that would be the last straw for me. Imagine paying for a service, for example Spotify, but you still only get to use it for 4 hours per day.

GingerKun,

It’s much worse, actually. Twitter API has been dead for months by exorbitant costs, but TweetDeck is a first-party feature! Twitter is a joke.

GingerKun,

That’s a little reductive… Lemmy Admins are users as well. And any bug reports or feedback you provide is implemented to improve Lemmy, which we all benefit from.

GingerKun,

Until recently, Linux didn’t differentiate between E Cores and P Cores on Intel CPUs. I think there are some efforts underway to implement a “linux hybrid scheduler,” but it isn’t fully optimized by any means. In reality, Linux still often has better battery life due to not being spyware, not updating without being asked, and some very clever battery saving CLI programs available.

GingerKun, (edited )

Searching for communities on apps rarely works for me. My hit rate on the web browser search is much better, especially for tiny communities that aren’t precached on vlemmy (those take an extra 5 seconds to polulate after clicking search). Don’t forget the ! And the @

GingerKun,

I like it a lot! The mod list populated and successfully downloaded one mod for Link’s Awakening and then they stopped polulating after that. It seemed like a second mod download hanged at 0% and nothing else would download after. Similarly, I installed yuzu once successfully and then I tried to update again and it still remained stuck.

I was able to get the yuzu updater to work again by uninstalling and reinstalling Toolbox with itch. However the LA mod list kept mostly failing to populate other than manually installed ones. I get the feeling that a large mod source wasn’t working (probably gamebanana as that seems like the biggest selection for Link’s Awakening).

GingerKun,

If there is a specific Lemmy software version mismatch, it only shows cached comments from before that change.
