I’m the last person who would leap to Meta’s defense, but I gotta ask: how, exactly, does one draw the line between a service being addictive and one that’s just well designed and pleasant to use?
I wouldn’t want this lawsuit to discourage quality web design.
Okay, I have no problem admitting I’m naïve on the subject. If I guessed wrong, though, what is addiction about? It’s hard for me to imagine getting addicted to something you aren’t likely to use and don’t like.
Sure, I can see people changing their mind about something once they’re already addicted, but that’s not the same thing.
Did you mean to reply to me? You’re kind of asking what I’m asking. I wouldn’t imagine there’s a “first dose” if the website is shitty and annoying to use. Instead of dopamine, wouldn’t there be bad memories and unpleasant associations?
Boarded up? Well, that changes if from darkly funny to just plain stupid.
To the soon-to-be-unemployed site supervisor, I’d like to say cheer up! Now you get to say you destroyed a house by accident! How many people can make that claim?
A friend of mine somehow said “rad” in a way that was ironic, gently mocking, and sincerely complimentary at the same time. It was perfect. I don’t think I’ll ever meet someone else who manages to say any word in quite that way.
According to the article, she’s been here since 2017. That’s plenty of time to understand that most republicans either tolerate racism in others, or are actively racists themselves. It would make more sense if she was disgusted, exasperated, or outraged, but “shocked”? She’s gotta be smarter than that.
A lot of gun owners don’t take safety seriously enough, either. Some of them leave loaded, unsecured firearms “hidden”, kids inevitably find them, and there are WAY too many tragic, completely preventable deaths. It’s insane.
I didn’t realize a B-52 had never landed in South Korea before. I would have assumed it had already happened enough times to be completely unremarkable.
The move marks a unique and possibly groundbreaking chapter in the deepening dilemma of what to do with imperiled coastal homes, which are becoming only more vulnerable amid rising seas, more intense storms and unceasing erosion....
Wait until these people are even more desperate. They bought these houses as vacation homes and rental properties, and knew the area was at risk. They’re lucky to be getting anything at all.
They don’t need the money. Play hardball, and save it for the thousands of people who will.
Hey there, fellow movie enthusiasts! I’m on the hunt for films that portray positive masculinity. We often see movies with traditional, stereotypical portrayals of masculinity, but I believe there’s a world of cinema out there that can challenge these norms and offer a fresh perspective....
Dune. Maybe it doesn’t focus enough on what you’re looking for, but I was happy to see Paul so readily showing affection for his friends (like Duncan and Hawat), receiving affection in return, and the genuinely loving relationship between Paul and his father.
I especially liked how Paul’s father reacted when Paul said he wasn’t sure he could be Duke: “You’ll still be the only thing I ever needed you to be - my son.”
It’s worth noting that I genuinely liked Duncan, not because he was tough, “cool”, or a good fighter (although he was all of those things), but because he was a good person. I was actually sad when he died. By contrast, a lot of movies make you root for a character because they’re a badass who cracks jokes, and leave it at that.
I also appreciate that positive masculinity is normalized in several brief scenes, rather than an obvious, clumsy, heavy-handed delivery.
I didn’t want to direct this question to Americans specifically because, at this point, other countries have shown support to Israel in one or the other way. If my country was financing this, I would be taking the streets. Shit, I’m right now in the hospital but all I can think about is protesting anyway just to feel I did...
The government sees it as a strategic need to have a strong ally in the region. That view will not change, at least not anytime soon. The Pentagon considers it a national security issue, which puts it beyond politics. Unfortunately, I have to live with that.
if you voted for Trump, you are forever cut off from the Blessings of Liberty.. you are not, and never will be fellow citizens of mine.. i will not defend any of you or your offspring from even the most basic harm.. you are enemies living among us for the rest of your lives..
I can’t get on board with “all your offspring”. Some of the worst violators of human rights do that, like China, Russia, and North Korea. It is never fair to hold children accountable for the wrongs of their parents.
My hatred of throw pillows is so extreme that it borders on psychotic.
“They don’t serve any purpose besides getting in your way! What if you want to sit on the couch, but there’s already someone else on it? You can’t just put the throw pillow in their lap. You can’t toss it on the floor, either. That’s rude. I HATE THEM SO MUCH.” 🔪 🪶🪶🪶
I used to have one of those black plastic (or was it Bakelite?) Space-Commander 400 remotes, pictured in the black and white ad.
I was walking home from grade school. Somebody was getting rid of their ancient TV, and had left it on the curb. The boxy, awkwardly shaped remote was in its “holster” on the TV, so I grabbed it and took it home. Before then, I had assumed that only infrared wireless remotes existed.
The idea that a remote could work by ultrasound fascinated me, and the fact that it didn’t even need batteries absolutely blew my little mind.
Atheism can seem like it’s about anti-Christianity, because a lot of American atheists have a Christian background. They’re justifiably pissed about the lies they were taught, and the rampant hypocrisy of Christianity. They’re often very vocal, especially online.
Over time, people usually get less angry about their personal experiences, and find it easier to step back and take a broader view. Too much of any religion is a problem.
Yeah. Being sensible enough not to let superstition rule your life is a plus, but a lot of atheists are nothing but obnoxious people who like to be contrarians and think they’re smarter than others. That’s not a very helpful attitude, and I think that taking atheism to such an extreme that you automatically look down on theists is, well, kind of similar to being religiously intolerant. Isn’t that something we should avoid?
I also know a few smart, wonderful folks who happen to let religion play a role in their lives, and I think that’s fine. They actually use religion for its stated purpose, which is (generally speaking) to improve themselves and the world around them. They do it in a tolerant, non-evangelical way, too, that respects the beliefs of others. Yeah, they happen to believe some things I think are unnecessary, but so what? Who am I to judge, when they live such positive lives?
I also know many more people who use religion as an excuse to be willfully ignorant, hypocritical, and closed-minded. That’s the kind of religious “belief” I look down on.
