Best way to remotely access pc on same LAN

Hey guys. I have a steam link I’ve used for quite some time. But I’m wanting to figure out a solution that is similar but grants full PC control. I have my main PC hardwired and a steam link and monitor out in my garage I’m routing to with a power line adapter that works pretty great. But it has a lot of issues when...

LainTrain,

I’m pro AI because of this to a large extent. Artbros and their soul shit it’s like a cult fr. Nobody’s advocating against workers’ rights or for capitalism, tech is value neutral, it’s how it’s used that gives it value, and FOSS models in the hands of the working class everyday folks does more good than bad.

LainTrain, (edited )

AI art is real and good from a socialist viewpoint. AI in general is great tech and I love it, I want more of that and less of the corpos and the bourgeoise “b-b-but my IP!” artbros

LainTrain, (edited )

I mean, Stable Diffusion is open weight, the code is there too, so is the paper, and it is free as in free beer and incredibly easy to use thanks to the open source community. In the same vein, Mistral is a good fairly libre LLM.

I think the problem is that when people hear AI they think DALL-E and ChatGPT whereas to me that’s just weird corporate alternatives.

The way people interact with technology has been so commercialised and basically repackaged into less tech and more something akin to products for the average person and it’s a damn shame. Crypto to them means something something NFT hot potato, to me it has always been about buying drugs and circumventing laws. To them - internet is ads, to me the internet is how I avoid ads that I see way more of IRL. Algorithmic content in my internet browsing experience is basically non-existent.

As a result there’s a cultural divide there where us slightly more tech-savvy folks live in a completely different world where for us it quite literally really isn’t the case. I’m happy to reach across that divide and educate so we can actually modernize the left because no matter what - this isn’t going away.

But I think a lot of artbros don’t really want to learn or discuss this, and when you have irrational, baseless reasons for hating AI art like blatant falsehoods i.e. “it’s all just theft look at this totally not img2img example of my art!!!” or cultish nonsense about “souls” or “culture” or “spirit” or “human spark” or whatever other spook du jour, it’s impossible to argue.

This is made even worse by the fact that at least from what I’ve seen, currently proposed regulations will only lock in corporate control on the models by ensuring that only those with the capital can meet those regulations or pay fines for not meeting them, and the artbros pushing for them without understanding anything about tech play right into the corpos hands.

It’s ironic, the same types in my xp will often will joke about some unhinged code monkey on the orange website thinking he knows everything about politics just because he is the smarterest programmer in all of JS bootcamp, yet they fail to see that by repeating the silly theft and appeals to nature etc. arguments they are playing into the same trap of ignorance in that they don’t fully understand the tech they’re drawing conclusions about.

LainTrain,

I’m not a graphical artist personally but I’d imagine that even those who can draw don’t always have the skill to lay it out exactly as in their head either.

I mess around with music a bit as a hobby and I feel like it took me years to learn how to actually carry an idea from my head all the way to a track without it changing simply because I lacked the skill to express what I wanted, and even still it sometimes isn’t quite right.

Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads (www.techradar.com)

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

LainTrain,

I don’t claim to really understand what the purpose of state atheist policies is, perhaps someone can ELI5 It me, but at least It seems fair honestly, as:

The school is part of the GO! network, which has a general ban on wearing religious symbols.

If it was a ban explicitly on Muslim headscarves it’d be discriminatory. Another question is whether this will be enforced in equal measure on a white kid wearing a cross though…

LainTrain,

Ty! That explains it!

LainTrain,

As I anticipated. Racism sucks

LainTrain,

How relevant to it is this though? Like never - not once - have I ever heard of someone upgrading their phone because their version of Android was too old.

It’s far more likely they’ll upgrade due to degraded performance and/or battery life packed into these updates with either new features (or more like, anti-features if we’re being cynical). Want to use a smartphone for its lifespan? Don’t upgrade software unless you absolutely need to. This actually applies to any computers really.

If anything, thanks to manufacturers like Samsung slowly overwriting android with their bloatware crap most people aren’t even aware of what version of android they run because it doesn’t even look anything like any other version of android on any other phone, unfortunately brands like Samsung succeeded in creating a soft walled garden for users by obscuring the fact they’re using anything but ‘A Samsung’.

Ask a non-tech savvy user for a USB-C charger, and they’ll not know what you mean, but ask them for a Samsung charger and they’ll hand you USB-C.

LainTrain,

Yes but that doesn’t address the fact that people won’t throw away their phone just because it doesn’t have an update.

Plus user features for most people will be independent of the Android version since not many android features actually make it to Samsung’s touchwiz/oneui/whatever-this-month for example

LainTrain,

This is why Discord is poison to our shared pool of knowledge, it’s such a black hole for many games and software (especially ironically enough open source projects) in lieu of decent docs.

It’s always wild to me how much sex gay men have that they have to put out announcements like this, it often feels like monogamy is rare among them based on news coverage (not sure how true it actually is), whereas for my gay trans ass I’ve never even sought casual sex and hadn’t had any since I first transitioned in my teens and subsequently decided my virginity was to be no more, now my only partner is always my S.O., I figured it’d be the norm amongst queer people.

LainTrain, (edited )

Wild, so they practice polygamy? Gotta say I don’t know any gay men but I’ve never seen lesbians or bis, both cis and trans be anything but monogamous.

Is it an fwb network thing or like proper relationships but they just don’t care who their partner bangs on the side? I’m genuinely curious, not trying to come off as insulting.

LainTrain,

Never heard of it, all the trans lesbian relationships I’ve been in with bi and les trans women have been completely monogamous. Maybe it’s just your group of friends?

LainTrain,

Damn, that’s rough. I never knew how lucky I was to know I never had to worry about the testing and all that, godspeed to them in that case.

Another q: Are open relationships considered polygamy?

LainTrain, (edited )

Wild, maybe it’s a regional thing like I said with your group of friends. Fwiw I don’t think there’s such a thing as a trans community IRL btw, most trans people only know one or two other trans people at most. Like I know a few but they all don’t know each other etc.

LainTrain,

Yeah that’s what I’m saying, maybe where you live just has a weird proportion of trans people who are fairly close-knit in comparison to other areas (like where I lived in both capital and smaller cities), especially because chances of bumping into another trans person IRL are next to nil because we are some <1% of the population, so perhaps it’s some kinda bay area free love culture you got going on there that just isn’t the experience of the average trans person. Godspeed in any case.

LainTrain,

Formerly Chuck’s?

LainTrain,

That’s so cool! Very jelly. Would you mind sharing how you found all these communities when you moved around?

I’m very surprised a guy from London was gobsmacked by this, London if anything was the most alienating of them all and I never found any communities there either.

LainTrain, (edited )

Odd tbh, the only flyers and stickers I saw was Snapchats for buying weed and the occasional TERF one.

The only record store I saw was operated by two elderly men who seemed extremely irritated at the fact they had customers and especially me (store’s in Notting Hill), and low-balled harder than pawn stars (I needed money to get to work once so had the misfortune), they also seemed to be part of a chain.

At speaker’s corner I def saw political orgs too, but it was either anti-vaxxers/anti-maskere or TERFs usually.

I did find one cafe in Islington with pride flags, but there wasn’t anything besides that, certainly no “bulletin boards” and the coffee was the most disgusting swill I had, don’t think I’ve actually seen an independent book shop that wasn’t Waterstones or WHSmith in my 8 years living there.

Only thing I saw close to a community centre was a mormon church, which was never open, but often had entertaining crazy spiceheads outside of it that would chase people down the street on occasion.

I guess it depends on the area. I was also advised to look on Facebook, which is a good idea as I’ve never been on there before. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

P.S. Btw just to avoid confusion in the future: “City of London” especially when capitalized in this way as a specific name is actually a bit different from “London”: it’s a district within London en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London semi-autonomously operated by the CoL Corporation, judging by you mentioning Speaker’s corner I think you meant just London en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/London which is the stuff around the City of London.

LainTrain,

Yeah we def had. And Aaah fair enough about the City. I’ve not lived in the City, only in North London, for a long time quite close to Hyde Park so I’m pretty familiar with speaker’s corner.

I do remember also seeing pro-Russian war protestors by Bayswater next to the Ukrainian protesters outside the Ruski embassy once. It was pretty funny because between both groups there were like 10 people total and most people just went around them silently ignoring them like typical Londoners about everything, occasionally granting them with a tut
