LibertyLizard,

This is a classic. Really shows how intellectually bankrupt the “natural cycles” obfuscation is.

LibertyLizard,

The Sacramento Sheriff’s department has a long history of criminal behavior and impunity. They are not much different from an organized crime ring at this point.

LibertyLizard,

Any private property, usually. Personal property is often exempt but there are different conceptions of where the line is. The most compelling to me is the concept of usufruct, wherein ownership is conferred by use. So anything you are personally using would belong to you and could be kept until you were done with it. But you could not impose a property claim on anything you are not using, because to do so would be to unjustly deny its use by someone else. Land is certainly a common example, but buildings, goods, anything could be viewed through this lens.

Hong Kong arrests three for 'insulting' Chinese anthem: They were turning their backs, remained seated when China's national anthem was played prior to a football match (www.france24.com)

Football fans in Hong Kong used to boo the national anthem as a show of political discontent, but the government in 2020 banned the practice as part of a wider crackdown following huge democracy protests in the city....

LibertyLizard,

Nationalism is a poison in the public consciousness everywhere it takes root.

LibertyLizard,

Does killing the billionaire solve anything though? The system will just put some other stooge in his position instead. Systemic change is the only way to solve this.

LibertyLizard,

The residents of SF should work towards making these people as miserable as possible for as long as they remain in the city. You don’t get to enjoy the benefits of the city the people built as you work to destroy it.

LibertyLizard,

For example? I don’t know of a single so-called labor shortage that wouldn’t be solved by higher wages or better working conditions.

LibertyLizard, (edited )

I don’t agree. There are tons of people in Florida who would be capable and willing to do manual labor, provides the wages and working conditions were better than alternatives. The ag economy depends on migrant workers because they are more desperate and therefore easier to exploit, which is more profitable.

Also, the orange shortage specifically is more driven by a deadly disease introduced by global trade than any labor shortage.

LibertyLizard, (edited )

In most cases this will be easily solved by on-the-job training, but with doctors there is also the added problem of a bureaucracy that has acted deliberately to restrict the supply of doctors, so as to protect the wages and prestige of that profession. That’s not to say that these problems don’t exist, but describing them as labor shortages that can be solved simply by importing more bodies is misleading.

In the context of US constitutional law, yes. But freedom of speech can have a wider meaning in moral philosophy. What someone might mean when they speak of the idea will vary.

Anyway, I don’t think anyone has an obligation to listen to or host content they find offensive or harmful, but in the context of a public forum that hosts a wide range of non-curated content and discourse, removing content or banning people just because it is critical of you or you disagree with it may be morally wrong. Especially when there are clearly outlined rules and the content does not clearly violate those rules. This happens frequently on this instance (and others, but this seems to be the main offender among the big instances currently).

LibertyLizard,

I’ve been finding that the next button just reloads the first page again. Not sure if that’s just me.

LibertyLizard,

Meanwhile, on Lemmy.ml:

Removed by mod

LibertyLizard,

The irony that this was removed lmao

LibertyLizard,

I know lol. The point was that the mods here (maybe including OP?) here don’t seem overly concerned about freedom of speech in general, not just in the specific case in the comic (which I do agree is not really a speech issue). So this comic is a bit of a straw man in that larger context.

LibertyLizard,

Is it practical for vehicle charging though? From what I’ve seen, typically these periods of abundant green energy are only for short periods of the day or year. At other times, additional energy will be generated by gas or other dirty source.

LibertyLizard, (edited )

Overall a good summation of most of the facts, however, they did gloss over an important issue with EVs and the grid.

Yes, the grid can handle the additional load with proper development, but adding any new load to the grid at this point will necessarily slow our transition away from fossil electricity, unless you somehow charge only during times of excess renewable energy. Currently, this is not possible.

Also, I think there’s lots of other useful things we might find to do with cheap excess energy that will be available at certain times. I don’t know exactly what but pumping or desalinating water is one possible idea. Sort of an inverse peaker plant—a cheap piece of infrastructure that may sit idle for a time but kicks on when there is more energy than we can use to do some practical work.

LibertyLizard,

Was this a case of jury nullification? You love to see it.
