Big oil quietly walks back on climate pledges as global heat records tumble (www.theguardian.com)

Leading energy companies are intent on pushing the world in the opposite direction, expanding fossil fuel production and insisting that there is no alternative. It is evidence that they are motivated not by record warming, but by record profits, experts say.

Meowoem,

It’s also mental illness, they don’t need to worry about money either they’re rich enough to live wonderful lives already but they are greed obsessed and their ego can only be fed if they’re destroying the world

Meowoem,

They don’t know they’re getting brought out to be destroyed, it’s the same way Microsoft used to operate ‘oh this tech is amazing we’ll invest and help bring it to the masses!’ closely followed by ‘ok now you signed it over pack it all up into the incinerator…’

Meowoem,

Those two things are great solutions for the billionaires but absolutely suck for everyone else, no wonder you see them pushed so much.

The first is a tax which will strongly affect the poor while allowing the rich to continue as normal, the second allows the rich to control power generation and essentially continue the monopoly rather than move towards decentralised sources which can be community run.

We need to switch from a greed based system which obsesses over displays of wealth and move to a more ecologically sound way of existence, but people can’t even consider taking the slightest responsibility for their lifestyle

Meowoem,

It’s funny to me because all these people are saying exactly what everyone used to say about mobile phones, about the internet, about computers… I know so many people who railed against the internet saying they’d never use it and that computers only make things more difficult - now they’re all yelling on Facebook about how the evil corporations they work for aren’t letting them work from home lol

AI will keep getting better and the way people use it will continue to evolve, there will be truly great things made by obsessive outsiders which speak to people in ways nothing has… Just like with every minor technical or social Innovation in art. Many of the giants of the old era will vanish and many new greats will grow and start to stagnate into conformity…

I’m excited for the future and all the interesting things it brings, we can’t just stop creativity and progress because some affluent performers want guarantees of stability which just don’t exist in reality

Meowoem,

Yeah I have a tiny one with a trackpad for setting up raspberry pis and a bigger fold out one for typing on my phone when I’m traveling, they make everything so much easier

Meowoem,

Didn’t he invite violentacres to a staff party and give him a special award?

Meowoem,

Absolutely, for a long time it’s obvious the good things about Reddit existed because of users but not only didn’t Reddit management like those users or listen to them but they actively worked against them. I don’t really know what they thought Reddit was but they clearly had a very odd view of it.

Meowoem,

I’m lucky that my curated feed was mostly open source coding, AI tech and solar punk so I’ve been able to find even better communities than Reddit had. The less tech adjacent subs will take longer to build but you can see them starting to establish - I guess the best way to help that is to participate in them and to introduce other people to them.

Meowoem,

Yeah I’ve genuinely not missed it, been just over two weeks and I’ve been having so much fun here I haven’t once found myself at a loose end wondering whats happening on Reddit

Which is surprising considering i still run quite a few subs I started and mod a few medium sized ones, when I get back home in a couple of weeks I’ll convert my bots to message me via lemmy instead and I really don’t think I’ll be going back

Meowoem,

This can make it so much more secure for governments than Twitter, it also removes Elon or whoever from being able to bias algorithms in favour of his favourites.

I really think this is going to be the standard for companies and governments

Meowoem,

Yeah but nuclear has one very important advantage over alternatives, it puts all the power in the hands of billionaires. Smaller companies, farmers, even home owners with a pv, wind grid could supply power locally allowing communities to be in control of their own energy requirements which will mean the billionaires won’t have such a tight and deadly grip on their lives - what next?! Allowing free communication over a community run internet? Food security without needing to work eight hour days in awful conditions?

It doesn’t matter how we generate power at long as the billionaires are the only ones able to do it, everything else must be derided and attacked endlessly for the good of our precious oligarchy.

Meowoem,

Yeah, all the nuclear projects they announce go hugely over budget and often get cancelled because the money pulls out because it’s impossible to be profitable while all the wind farms and solar installations are doing far better than projected and the cost of construction is constantly falling.

No one actually interested in power generation is looking at what’s happening and coming to the conclusion that these oil company shills are trying to push, it just makes no sense.

Meowoem,

I wonder what price they’ll be able to bring it to market at, could be a game changer in so many situations. Recording studios is the obvious first use but if it’s affordable the maybe clubs and live venues won’t need to worry about noise complaints, same for industrial sites.

It might even get cheap enough that it’s suitable for residential use, would be amazing being able to block my deaf neighbours TV.

Meowoem,

A generation that naturally preferred to grow intoxicating medicinal plants with their parents’ ok effect themselves and was able to stop experimenting.

There’s just so much in this one

How does this instance feel about this growing pact against federating with Meta? (fedipact.online)

Meta/Instagram launched a new product called Threads today (working title project92). It adds a new interface for creating text posts and replying to them, using your Instagram account. Of note, Meta has stated that Threads plans to support ActivityPub in the future, and allow federation with ActivityPub services. If you...

Meowoem,

It’s not really fair to call it stealing.

This is an open source platform so you can use the code freely, the developers decided to make it open source because creating tools and sharing them for everyone to use enables us all to work together and build better technology which improves the quality of life we all enjoy.

I take the same attitude when posting here, I’m making a public statement because I believe we as a society make better choices when all voices are heard and that I have something to add to the discussion - if someone wants to take an idea that I have and build in it or incorporate it into a speech they give then I’m happy about it because that’s the point of expressing an opinion, for it to spread. If someone learns from what I’m talking about then I’m happy, I don’t feel robbed or like I lost anything.

Coming on a free and open source platform then demanding ownership of your text would make even less sense than Bob Ross getting angry that people are following along with his painting tutorials. I get the sentiment and yes ai is changing the world and people will lose their jobs but it’s also bringing endless positive advancements which will improve and extend billions of lives - if datasets are locked down by oddly selfish rules like having to track down the original poster and ask for permission then only big corporation’s will be able to train LLMs and other ai thus giving them a monopoly.

Also another interesting hypocrisy that a lot of people are missing, meta might be awfull in many regards but they’re actually pretty good with open source and wrote a lot of the tools that made things like stable diffusion possible. Taking what they give then complaining when they use content posted publicly just feels so odd to me.

Meowoem,

I really am split on this, I think that modern corporate media has a big incentive to convince people that we shouldn’t participate in community projects and that working together for the betterment of all is somehow a bad thing because this is what directly affects their monopoly and control.

That said you’re right that other portions of corporate evil benefit by us thinking it has no value.

I do think we need to move away from the pushed ideal that the only benefit to work is money because that really does just benefit the rich - take Wikipedia as an example, writing pages for that isn’t going to earn me money but it allows me to live in a world where Wikipedia exists, and it’s not just me that gets to use it but everyone trying to do anything now has access to that resource which means whatever I do it’s possible that the work I put into editing articles has somehow made it a bit easier or a bit more possible.

This is even more true with open source software, it’s possible that a project I’ve done some small thing to help has grown to benefit the people making point of sale systems that allow a cafe I like to reduce costs and stay in business or maybe the veg was grown by someone that learned how from a YouTube video made using open source software…

AI is already making so many more things possible and when natural language control is better evolved it’s going to have benefits like giving every human on the planet access to world class healthcare, education and tech support, it’s going to allow anyone with an idea to make it reality and to allow open source developers to create really amazing things that we can all use.

If harvesting my throw away comments and old wiki edits can create a tool that will allow me to sit down and describe the electronics projects and coding ideas I want to make then they’re welcome to it.

Meowoem,

Yeah maybe a share-alike clause would be best, use the data if what you’re making is properly free otherwise pay

Meowoem,

Since Elon took over they’ve been doing endless quick patches and work arounds so they can rip bits of the code out - you can get away with that as long as you don’t change the core function but the second you make a big change all those little bits are going to be stress tested in all sorts of new ways that require a lot of work hours to fix.

Meowoem,

The tin foil part of my brain says that they’re trying to destroy media ahead of the election so they can control the narrative but really I think it’s just that we’ve reached a point where no one is pouring free money into literally any old internet nonsense and it’s turned out that this ‘they’re selling your data and making billions!’ was never actually very true.

They pushed their website as ‘we’re having massive growth and with enough investment we can dominate the market!’ so all the idiot ‘angel Investors’ threw monkey into it but that can only last so long before people say ‘ok you dominate the market, now what?!’
