MrFunnyMoustache,

I think it depends on the environment you’re in. In my social circle, among family, friends, and coworkers, almost all of them believe that socialism is a poverty cult and a terrible idea that will lead to more human suffering, so when I express any socialist opinion, it will be unpopular in my environment. Obviously here on Lemmy, it’s the opposite and socialism is popular here.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Trying to get people to change problematic behaviour, language, or opinion through yelling, or shaming is ineffective most of the time. Obviously I can’t expect people who belong to minorities to not be angry, not everyone can be Daryl Davis, but if you are white and don’t have a personal trauma, you should use more effective methods to correct people’s problematic behaviour.

Source: I was able to get my family to stop using the N word, and even my elderly father who doesn’t actually remember that it’s bad to use the N word has stopped using it thanks to this very simple technique: every time he says that word, stop the conversation and explain why this word is harmful and dangerous to use, don’t let them steer the conversation back. Being visibly angry with them will only make them dig in their heels and seek comfort with other people who are racist, making it more difficult to get them out.

Eventually they will subconsciously stop using that word, simply because this causes the conversation to be interrupted every time. So while I don’t punish them (can’t exactly tell my father to go to his room or something), the repeated inconvenience of having the conversation halted every time will get it in their head eventually.

I think this is the most effective method to correct problematic behaviour in adults.

MrFunnyMoustache,

No. What I mean is that yelling and cursing is not effective at changing people’s behaviour so it is best to avoid that, but at the same time I can’t expect a black person who has suffered personally and directly from racism to remain composed and polite, while it is relatively easier for someone who isn’t from a minority group and never been a victim of to remain composed.

MrFunnyMoustache,

That’s not what I meant… I meant that the method of correcting problematic behaviour that I usually see from fellow progressive is ineffective, and that opinion seems to be unpopular among leftist circles.

MrFunnyMoustache, (edited )

What about food? If you go to Italy and declare that your favourite pizza topping is pineapple, I assure you it will not be received well. If you put chorizo on paella, you would be scorned in Spain… Go to an American police station and declare that doughnuts suck, and you might get shot.

Any topic that people are passionate about, and you are going to see plenty of arguments and see some unpopular opinion pop up.

Edit: repetition

MrFunnyMoustache,

That’s great. I was mostly thinking of IRL conversations, but this works too.

MrFunnyMoustache,

I would like to see a feature that allows me to enable it for specific contacts/conversations and disable for the rest. It’s useful if there is something that I need to tell someone that’s time sensitive but not urgent enough for me to call them, but I don’t want everyone to be able to know if I have read a message or not.

So for family and close friends I would like to enable that feature, but for anyone else I would like it to be disabled.

Since this is all or nothing right now, I keep it disabled for everyone.

MrFunnyMoustache,

In order for this feature to be enabled with both participants of the conversation. What I mean is that I want it to be disabled for my conversation with everyone with the exception of specific people.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Getting insulted by a sassy robot while you solve puzzles and try not to die.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Speaking of stealing things, I am going to steal this opportunity to segue…to our sponsor.

MrFunnyMoustache,

I use a soap bar, and just scrub my body with it. It does the job.

MrFunnyMoustache,

The ability to accelerate my speed of thoughts so I could come up with witty comebacks in real time and not hours later.

MrFunnyMoustache,

I love it. Jujutsu Kaisen is my favourite shounen. So far, episodes 1 and 2 were great, and I can’t wait to see more.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Infinity for Reddit was my favourite Reddit client, and now that Infinity has a Lemmy fork I use it exclusively.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Not less than Jerboa from my experience, very few crushes… There is a bug that if you refresh a thread twice in a row it crashes, but other than that easily avoidable big it hasn’t crashed for me once in either 0.0.6 or 0.0.8.

MrFunnyMoustache,

I’m out of the loop and still new to Lemmy, what happened?

MrFunnyMoustache,

Falafel is made of chickpeas which are healthy, but deep frying them isn’t very good for you. Not too bad as long as you don’t eat it all the time, but OP asked for healthy foods.

MrFunnyMoustache,

The peaceful death you are talking about is from lack of oxygen, but when you’re in an enclosed space, there is CO2 buildup, and when you get too much CO2 it makes your blood slightly more acidic, which makes you feel an intense urge to breathe and you’ll die before running out of oxygen. That’s a terrible way to die.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Exactly. Hard drives will also be obselete in the not too distant future, and a picture of a nand chip isn’t the most descriptive. I think we should keep the film strip, since that’s how film began, and these reels of film can only be used for video so you know what the icon means even if you have never seen the icon before.

Snakes have been associated with medicine since the Greek myth of Asclepius, and we use it in modern hospitals today, so I don’t think the floppy disk save icon will need to change.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Interesting, it runs without stutters on my Pixel 6, but crashes often. Either way, alpha software isn’t expected to be stable, so hopefully it will get better.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Not what I meant. If they break the law, they should be put through the legal system and actually be treated like any criminal instead of getting special privileges. What I meant is that I am against executions in general; even mass murderers shouldn’t be executed once they are in custody of the state, they should be in prison for as long as needed to keep them away from society.

MrFunnyMoustache,

It is a problem, and their wealth needs to be redistributed regardless, but the rule of law is important. If a billionaire has done zero crimes, they should still not be allowed to keep the majority of their wealth, but they shouldn’t be imprisoned if they hadn’t broken the law.

MrFunnyMoustache,

Perfect; I am 100% with you on this one.
