Colorado's star DNA analyst intentionally manipulated data and affected more than 650 cases.

The U.S. government increasingly uses difficult to scrutinize, ML-based decision systems to convict and incarcerate people, such as facial recognition, gunshot detection, and probabilistic genotyping tools. Our paper asks what challenges do people face contesting these systems in court?

Defense teams face challenges assessing and contesting reliability due to difficulties (a) navigating how these tools are developed and used, (b) overcoming judges and jurors' non-critical perceptions of the technology, and (c) gathering technical expertise. Technical and policy interventions are urgently needed to help public defenders overcome these challenges.

Ppl can't seem to stop talking about LLMs having their iPhone moment. But what if the LLM isn't the iPhone? More like the touch screen?

Niloufar,
@Niloufar@hci.social avatar

@andresmh I think what made the iPhone so popular is UX design. LLMs are just the underlying technology (like touch screen, sim card, etc.), what can make them useful will come down to UX.

I've been wrestling with the gap between HCI curricula, which tend to focus on the design process, and the big theories and ideas that animate us in HCI. Here's a model that has starting working well here for me here at Stanford: https://medium.com/@msbernst/teaching-hci-foundations-and-frontiers-76bb22616e0d

Niloufar,
@Niloufar@hci.social avatar

@msbernst great article thank you for sharing. I feel like HCI is a bit hard to teach so it's great to read about your approach and how it's worked. For "getting students to reflect on their own ideas," I have a week toward the end where they pick three of the Tarot cards of tech and apply the questions to their own final project. It's one if the most engaging assignments. They write their answers and also how they would continue the design process to tackle the new challenges they discovered.

The first reading of the semester in my undergrad design course will be @Niloufar's analysis of SyntheticUsers.

In my first class, I will teach needfinding techniques. In the past, I had students brainstorm potential clients' needs and aspirations during lecture and then I challenged them to discover insights that went beyond what they could come up without talking to people. Now I also have to inoculate them against the LLM temptation.

Other ideas?

@jbigham @kgajos I think it's important to emphasize different types of expertise (learned, lived, etc. ) and how and where they are useful.

If you had an intelligent system that had access to all of the CHI 2023 proceedings, what questions would you ask?

jbigham, to random

it's taken a few months, but i finally wrote down all my values. it was surprisingly easy. now we just need to focus all our energy on alignment to them.

@jbigham I'm pretty sure you missed one between and .

Sad news: Theo chocolate factory in Seattle is closing!

I lived a few blocks away but never got to tour the factory 😔

I have good memories of the smell as I commuted to work by the Burke Gilman trail https://seattle.eater.com/2023/6/29/23778590/theo-chocolate-merger-factory-closure-layoffs

Congrats to @cqz for graduating with his PhD from UW CSE!! Jim is the first PhD graduate from @socialfutureslab and also my first PhD student! His dissertation was on "Understanding and Addressing Uncertainty of the Crowd", and you can read it here! ➡️ https://homes.cs.washington.edu/~cqz/dissertation.pdf

@axz how long are you around?

Niloufar,
@Niloufar@hci.social avatar

@axz great! Also, are you on goodreads?

Niloufar,
@Niloufar@hci.social avatar

@axz I don't write reviews just what I'm reading and it's good for looking at what other people are reading.

Twitter makes some dumb decisions: half my feed says "whatever, I'm outa here." Reddit makes some dumb decisions, people band together to protest because they care! That grass-roots spirit is something wonderful that Reddit corporate should support, not stamp out

Niloufar,
@Niloufar@hci.social avatar

@andresmh agreed. The power/control that Reddit gave users was a major reason why they grew so quickly. Now they're turning around and wanting that power back.

I wish an anthropologist of religion would write a book about alignment, EA, AGI, etc.

Niloufar,
@Niloufar@hci.social avatar

@jbigham I haven't read it but will take a look. I'm looking for someone to explain the social practices of meaning making, the symbolism, the culture.. of the people active in the space and their followers.
