OK, you want to decide what's in your social media feed--but how do you do that?

New paper by @kjfeng @axz @xander David McDonald and me!

How do we keep doing CS research that isn’t AI? https://asbruckman.medium.com/surviving-the-ai-summer-64626e5547e3

Chapter 7 of my book "How do business models shape online communities?" argues that social media platforms that must maximize profits can never do the right thing for individuals or communities. We need more non-profit alternative media.

It is now free online:

Just updated my web pages to point to hci.social instead of Twitter. Very satisfying.

Have we decided yet what the appropriate gender-neutral substitute for sir/ma’am is? Because especially when I’m back in Georgia (maybe I regress to being ten years old) I sir/ma’am service workers constantly out of habit.

asb,
@asb@hci.social avatar

@cfiesler I also want a term of respect for someone younger? As far as I know, in Southern manners you use “sir” and “ma’am” for people older than you. Some older southerners will say “young man” and “young lady,” but I just can’t

I'm trying out a new AI policy for my spring class. What do you all think? https://asbruckman.medium.com/a-draft-new-ai-policy-for-my-college-class-29cd971e89c1

@andresmh 100%. And we need to learn what those assignments look like.

But here’s an example where that failed spectacularly. Assignment: study an online community with participant observation and interviews; write it up. Some students did the interviews but used generative AI to generate interview summaries. OK, but the details of the subjects in the paper don’t match the interview transcripts. Did they even bother to give the transcript to the AI, or did the AI extrapolate too much? Wow.

I can't imagine going directly from CSCW to AoIR! Wishing you all extra social energy.

Just got a Reddit mod mail from a lawyer saying "please remove false accusations against my client." Client is arguably a public figure, and we have no way to know if the accusations are false. Ignore the mail or...? (This makes my head hurt.) @Popehat

asb,
@asb@hci.social avatar

@andresmh I'm not necessarily worried about liability. I'm worried about: if he's guilty, then removing his name is enabling more bad behavior. If he's innocent, this is a continued burden on him. But I really don't want to know if he's innocent or guilty... it's not my business?

Academics, I've a challenge for you:

What's the most humblest, less boasting way to say:

"This paper is the first to do X"?

It has to be short. Can't be 2 lines long.

asb,
@asb@hci.social avatar

@upol Don’t? Just say “This paper does x.”

asb,
@asb@hci.social avatar

@upol Ugh—sometimes you get unlucky with reviewers

What social platform are you cutting back on this week?

@bkeegan all my feeds are kinda trash this morning, except… Facebook?

In ~2014, my colleague & I argued that social media (esp. Twitter) had become part of the critical infrastructure of disaster response. People were turning to Twitter during crises to share information about impacts and resources. Disaster responders were using the data shared there for situational awareness, and were communicating in real-time with their constituents. Today’s events underscore just how dangerous it is for society to come to rely on private platforms as critical infrastructure.

asb,
@asb@hci.social avatar

@katestarbird @sarahgilbert Yes. ACM code of ethics says: “3.7 Recognize and take special care of systems that become integrated into the infrastructure of society.” HTTPS://ethics.acm.org

asb,
@asb@hci.social avatar

@cyberlyra @katestarbird @sarahgilbert Agree. We need more nonprofit media infrastructure, supported by public dollars through grants (like NPR or community health groups).

Corporate platforms can never do the right thing. They must do what’s best for shareholders, which isn’t what’s best for members.
