@NovaSquirrel@chitter.xyz

I'm a hobbyist game developer who mostly focuses on old Nintendo consoles, but I've done projects on PC too.

I'm a furry and I like to make cute characters and also make games about them! Check out my Toyhouse to see my characters: https://toyhou.se/NovaSquirrel

I'd like to meet other people who like to do lighthearted, story-driven roleplay.

I post NSFW sometimes but I tag it, so please be 18+ if you follow.

Feel free to reach out if you have common interests and wanna be friends! [she/her]

I really want to see new mascot-focused media that's NOT horror. It really sucks to have the thing I'm most passionate about wrapped up in something uncomfortable more often than not.

It's very cool that there's been My Little Pony roleplay on Second Life recently, but I wish it would stop getting scheduled in a way that overlaps major downtown events so I don't have to leave them early

Or the next one looks like it'll overlap some holiday related family stuff, which is less ideal (maybe I'll be able to hop on my laptop? mystery)

Maybe I should just ask if we can start having events that aren't consistently at 3 PM on Sunday

Trying to spread awareness again for Tilemap Town, my visual MU* and hangout: https://novasquirrel.com/town/

It's open source and has a documented protocol, and is designed around the idea of collaboratively designing 2D maps with other players. You can use custom graphics for map tiles, and custom player graphics (if you can make a 32x32 doodle of a character, you can play as them!)

I've been working on it since 2017 so the software has had a lot of time to mature, but I've had a hard time helping it find its audience. If anyone knows how to reach people interested in lighthearted SFW furry I'd really like to know. I'm also hoping to specifically establish fantasy themes if possible!

I want to make game dev into a more social thing, but it's hard to find people wanting to talk about engine design and algorithms outside of an NES-specific context. Also a lot of people are very secretive anyway.

I like magical girl stuff a lot and I want to get some intuition for how to write it so I can use it in roleplays. I'm guessing a lot of that is just making sure I have a lot of exposure to the genre while also trying to actually pay attention to tropes and how they do things, though adapting stuff from anime into a format that's purely text seems nontrivial. There's gotta be fanfics at the very least that I can look at to get a hint for how to approach that.

People have been asking Bandai to rerelease the Tamagotchi Connection from 2004 for years and years and they finally did it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D3NDHJZY

It seems like it might be either a combination of multiple old Connection toys (like a "best of") or even a whole new entry in the series? In any case I'm really excited to see what it ends up being!!

I wish it were easier to get people to engage when I talk about my interests; I often feel like I'm just talking into the void

Playfully reading too much into how yesterday a Cyberchase episode aired involving a "Super-Snooper Satellite" ("Codename: Icky") and today's episode name ends in "as usual" ("Chaos as Usual")

Snooping as usual, I see?

it's funny to look at those "good2grow" juice bottles with the plastic character tops, and among all the Peppa Pig and My Little Pony and Paw Patrol there's Shadow the Hedgehog

Turns out the full version of Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX for PS1 is every bit as awkward and unintentionally funny as the demo in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, except I have more levels to be awkward in.

There's severe problems with things appearing in front of things they shouldn't, like my character appearing in front of a bench here and looking like I'm just a little baby man. Also when I grind on things the bike very rarely actually looks like it's making contact with what I'm grinding on.

My Second Life neighbor deleted everything they built and is now selling the land for the equivalent of $200. I don't think I'm willing to pay that (nor do I want to pay an extra $22/month for having that much land) but maybe they'd be willing to sell a small portion of it to me so I could expand my house a bit.

One weird aspect of Cyberchase doing episodes about environmentalism is that it emphasizes avoiding travel-related pollution in a setting that prominently features portals.

Way back in 2005 there was an episode where Hacker learned how to make his own portals, and then proceeded to set up a network of portals to teleport freely from site to site, so they have a really good solution that was already proven to work. Though that's me thinking about the setting more seriously than I probably should be.

Hanging out in chats for consoles that have active development communities makes me wish SNES had something like that. At least I can talk about general hardware stuff with the romhackers.

I think Tilemap Town would benefit from having chat channels on the side that don't take maps into consideration.

That way you could have like a "party chat" where a group doesn't have to be all on the same map to talk, but it's also sounding like it would help to have something that can act as a better IRC that still feels like it's under my control and doesn't involve trusting a company.

My fifth proxy shopping order came in! (Game Boy Color for scale)

It got kicked off by seeing that a Terriermon toy I wanted that walks and says "moumantai", but then I realized I could get the cool albums I saw on YouTube since they weren't very expensive. One of them seems to be a Super Audio CD which is interesting.

The Shinx light is silly and bigger than I expected, and I got some cute Pokémon blind boxes, though I already knew what would be in there.

Two Pokémon decorations. One of them is an Emolga napping in a little house suspended from a hook, on a cushion. The other decoration is dessert themed and it's a Pachirisu next to an Emolga on some sort of ice cream sundae?

Here's some art I got with my girlfriend of two of our pokésonas. I think I really enjoy having plenty of hair on Maffi even when she's a Shinx; I was worried about what it would do to the silhouette, but maybe gender euphoria is more important than silhouettes.

I feel strongly about making sure people understand the rights they have in regard to being able to build off of stuff companies have made, but I feel like I'm being annoying and pedantic when I point it out. I think companies do try to deliberately obfuscate how things really work because it benefits them if people think they have more control than they legally do, or think that control lasts forever.

I feel like I've had more opportunities to roleplay lately, but I'm still kind of struggling to get an ongoing story going that's exciting to me like stuff I've gotten to do in the past. It seems hard to make up stuff on the spot to escape just characters idly talking to each other; I have tried a bit, though I have learned that things that are exciting to me aren't always things other people also care about.

It'd be cool to see more people (or communities) try and make their own little hangouts online. Websockets make it really simple to have a basic chat app because they simplify everything down to the point where you can send and receive strings, and the client can just be a webpage.

Though I admit most people probably want features like a history, uploading images, or good handling for unreliable internet connections, and those aren't exactly trivial. I specifically wanted something where presence is meaningful and where everyone isn't just expected to be reachable all the time, myself.

Early on when I had just started having real opportunities to do story-driven roleplay, it was in a weird spot where pretty much all I could do was "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" related, but now that I actually have several characters and some story ideas I want to use with that sort of setting it's become harder to find, so that's tricky

Maybe there's still MLP stuff out there somewhere that isn't NSFW and isn't strict about canon

I really need to figure out how to find friends in timezones similar to mine, because the current situation where I can't spend time with people unless I ignore my job or don't go outside is not good

You would think there would be more people in North America online

I'm playing with updating my old NES Dr.Mario clone after finally getting to play it with someone else showed that there's a lot of stuff that really needed fixed, or that could be better.

It felt cool to get to play a Dr.Mario that was fast though.

It does feel kind of fitting in a weird way that my last hours spent online on 3DS involved me assuring people that yes, it's not scary or hard to hack a 3DS, and you're not likely to brick anything. Taking the "it's easy to hack a 3DS" meme all the way to the official end of the 3DS.

I'm using Animal Crossing: New Leaf's "talk to random strangers online" feature and everyone is so open about talking about Pretendo and custom firmware and everything.

I guess there's no reason not to be; what's Nintendo going to do, ban me from the service they're shutting down tomorrow?

I feel like there's a lot of pressure to make all social activities be voice calls. I think a lot of the time it's actually a lot more enjoyable when it's text-only, and I can put on nice music and there's no weird awkwardness or people talking over each other.
