OwenEverbinde,

btw, I’m stealing this and turning it into a writing prompt over on Literature Cafe.

The post is here

OwenEverbinde,

Yeah, going directly from Windows to NixOS is a harsh transition.

And it’s not like our status as a capitalist country has stopped us benefiting from Marx, either.

We beat slavery in part because England sat out the American Civil War. England sat out the war largely because the International Working Men’s Association decided England ought to sit out the war, (the South’s cheap cotton would have benefited English textile workers and other working class Englishmen, but the organization decided solidarity was more important). And the International Working Men’s Association was created by Karl Marx. Marx was giving speeches to them during the Civil War praising their solidarity.

Similarly, a lot of union organizers – who sacrificed their lives fighting for the 5-day workweek and the 8-hour day – were avowed, vocal Marxists.

Muckraker Upton Sinclair,-- whose book, The Jungle, gave us food safety standards – never hid his disdain for capitalist exploitation for so much as a single paragraph of that book.

You can work toward Marxist goals within capitalist countries and vastly improve capitalism in the process.

18+ What makes something moral or immoral?

I just came to know of a woman who was raped. i.e., not on TV but in real life, I saw her sobbing face. I didn’t have a clue what to do. I believe the right thing to tell her would have been to say, go to the police right now and give a rape exam, this would at least make sure there is a small chance that the scumbags who...

OwenEverbinde,

It sounds like you were distressed and left because you didn’t know what to do or how to help.

That’s empathy. Feeling uncomfortable when you see people in pain is empathy. And it’s normal. It’s normal for you to feel distressed around her as you hear her account. It’s normal to want to leave. It’s normal to feel guilty about leaving. It’s normal to wonder if you could have done more to help catch the bastard.

This is awful. What you just saw is awful. What you just experienced is legitimately uncomfortable.

And it’s hard for people to wrap their heads around, because how could your pain be valid when it’s a response to seeing someone in “real” pain? How could your pain be important when it’s nothing more than the faint echo of the pain you’re witnessing someone else go through?

But it hurts. As selfish as it feels to hurt at a time like this, it still hurts.

OwenEverbinde,

Are there any confiftent rulef for which placef an “f” can replace an “s” ?

OwenEverbinde,

Oh, we’d better be still doing a deep state. The only thing that helped me make it through inflation was the Soros Bucks from all the paid protesting I’ve been doing.

OwenEverbinde,

The entire industry is built on catering to the vast swaths of women who get ignored by doctors and need somewhere to turn.

I highly suspect doctors are taught in medical school, “women are over emotional and prone to exaggeration.”

Hell, “hysteria” was considered a valid diagnosis until the 1950s.

OwenEverbinde,

I’d build as many zero-equity housing co-ops as I could in areas with high costs of living.

  • OwenEverbinde,

I like this logic. Killing should be a last resort.

Further, if I had a billion dollars to spend, I’d sooner spend it on organizations like Life After Hate and get them the resources necessary to deconvert and deprogram Nazis than I would on any iteration of our current system of playing whack-a-mole with their censor-evading code words. Or on some Nazi-killing executioner.

I hate how quick people are to advocate giving up on their fellow humans.

    OwenEverbinde,

Maybe they’re focused on playing for time so they can insure their assets and move to hedge funds that are shorting all of the above industries? I don’t know investing that well.

    OwenEverbinde,

    Oh, he’s very far right.

But his favorite way of weaseling out of giving any direct answer on his actual religious beliefs is to highlight how “true in a sense” the stories are.

There are two very good Cosmic Skeptic YouTube shorts about it: [1] [2]

    OwenEverbinde,

    Ah, the Jordan Peterson.

    OwenEverbinde,

    Oh! You could call yourselves

    • "the slight right" or
    • "right lite"
    OwenEverbinde,

These companies wouldn’t even be able to get foreigners to replace the tech workers

Oh, but boy have they tried.

    OwenEverbinde, (edited )

Replacing Uber AND Amazon? And on top of that, this same country got sued a few years back for offering cheap, generic alternatives to expensive drugs to their populace. (Big pharma wasn’t happy)

India is making a lot of good moves.

    OwenEverbinde,
    • my kbin.cafe is going to be for writing
    • my universeodon.com will be for the same
    • my Lemmy.world I used just once for debugging
    • my reddthat.com was where I thought I would settle, but
    • the instance mod over at lemmy.myserv.one posted a reddit post requesting more users for his load-distributing instance, and I was like: “well that’s reason enough to switch.”

My only complaint is that this place isn’t federated with beehaw. I think Reddthat was federated with them?

    OwenEverbinde,

My eyes hurt. Is this real? Did people add cuts after it became a meme? The Know Your Meme page doesn’t mention any added cuts, but it’s just so hard to believe something this ridiculous is real. I get a little bit of vertigo just watching it.

    OwenEverbinde,

at least I can rely on people online to call me privileged because of my genitals and skin colour

Dude. Life is too short. Spoons are too hard to come by. Whoever is saying that to you, block them. Block them right now. For good measure, block one or two people for the mere crime of showing clips containing this bullshit rhetoric.

Not people complaining while offering wholesome alternatives, mind you, like Jordan_the_Stallion8 or Speech Prof or Joey Swoll (YOU MUST NEVER BLOCK JOEY SWOLL!)

But if you’re following some internet personality, and they show these weird extremists to you, and all you feel is anger afterwards… get rid of the people showing you the crazy man-haters. You do not need that in your life.

There will always be some portion of the population that seeks to invalidate every form of pain. Every, single form of pain!

    • saying rape victims are "asking for it"
    • saying poor people just need to work harder
    • saying ADHD folks like you and I are only held back by our laziness
    • saying black people who get the shit kicked out of them by a police officer "should have tried to deescalate"
    • saying white men live easy lives

Often these people are narcissists, and are fed by the outrage they generate. Sometimes they are just set in their ways, and don’t realize that science and society have moved past their obsolete worldview.

But in all cases, these people aren’t worth your limited energy.

Block them and subscribe to ADHD groups on all of your apps.

EDIT: I think I misstated myself. I’m going to be crossing some stuff out.

But they did though. Robert E Lee, Jefferson Davis, Alexander H Stephens, plus countless slaveowners all just… surrendered, and went back to owning the exact same plantations their slaveowning had provided the startup capital for.

Was it right? Hell no! Their plantations should have been given to their slaves. We would live in a better country if they had.

But it’s worth repeating that people who blew out their chest and blustered about how it was better to die than to lose this fight just went right back to comfortable lives after a heinous, sadistic, brutal form of capital exploitation was abolished right out from under them.

If you can abolish slavery without killing Dolly Sumner Lint or Jefferson Davis, then it stands to reason that even after sending Pinkertons, cops, and bootlickers to die by the thousands, [EDIT: at least some of] these billionaires will surrender at the first sign of blood on their doorstep.

Meaning you can abolish capital without killing Jamie Johnson OR Jeff Bezos.

[EDIT: Meaning, in the course of abolishing capital, you will not necessarily need to kill every, single Jamie Johnson and every, single Jeff Bezos.]

Which in turn means the killing of those particular people – [EDIT: those who surrender] – ends up peripheral at best.

They [EDIT: At least some of them] will not throw their bodies in front of the bullets aimed at their orphan killing machines.

As much closure as they would bring, as good as that would feel. [EDIT: Not all of them will make it that easy.] It’s just not going to happen.

And then, at that point – when they have surrendered – it’s like torturing a serial killer. We gain nothing. It doesn’t bring anyone back to life. It doesn’t put the aerosolized carbon back underground or bring the temperature back to livable levels. It doesn’t give back all of the years robbed from people by stressed and missed medical treatments. All it does is introduce a little bit more pain to the world.

    Again: at best.

At worst it could potentially set a precedent that anyone perceived as “aligned” with billionaires deserves the same death inflicted on those billionaires.

In other words, at worst, it could turn the person holding the guillotine into the de facto capitalist controlling all of the factories, all of the land, and all of the equipment single-handedly. Because who is going to stop them? Anyone who challenges that person can be easily labeled a “reactionary capitalist counter-revolutionary” and punished according to that label.

@sexy_peach, you’re going to have to take that one up with @Lanky_Pomegranate530

All of the Islamic posts are from that user / mod.

Some are good points. Some are generic complaints about religion. Some seem just… prejudiced. What’s weird is Lanky’s anti-christian memes actually answer real christian arguments. They are noticeably higher quality.

With all due respect, if you haven’t tried peanut butter at least once with every form of easily-retrievable food found in a fridge (tortilla, rice, carrots, celery, apples), then you have been managing your executive dysfunction waaaaay too effectively. What kind of ADHD meds are you on?

    OwenEverbinde, (edited )

Almost. I’m a backup you created of yourself. You don’t remember why. Neither do I. One of us was going to write it down, but by the time the pencil was in hand, the thought was gone from both of our minds.

    OwenEverbinde, (edited )

Except there’s no need to hypothesize about what the “the other side” wants. They have been perfectly vocal about what they think are issues that need to be “solved”:

    • Accurate history lessons
    • Transgender people
    • Women’s ability to have deadly ectopic pregnancies removed
    • "Urban" people
    • The right to protest against the flag
    • Gay people

If you have enough knowledge of history to know what a “final solution” looks like, you are justified in seeing “the other side” as the main problem.
