Been watching some iZombie. Nice diverse cast, liking the combination of drama and smart humor, plus the cases are interesting. Definitely not for the weak of stomach though.

PaladinBard,
@PaladinBard@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker I remember trying to figure out where I had seen the actor who plays Liv, and finally hitting IMDB and realizing that I'd seen her when my kids watched one of the Power Rangers iterations. Love the whole cast but was always tickled by that for some reason.

My latest random game hyperfocus: Origins! It's been long enough that it's like new again.

I've decided to play as Thedas Me. But since it's "origins," my Amell mage has my birth name, Rebekah. She represents young me: idealistic, spiritual, gifted, sheltered, lonely, certain that she's Special, driven by emotion and quick to believe in legends and all things mystical. I'll tag and thread my posts in case anyone wants to follow (or mute) my playthrough. :)

@shellgames I'm almost POSITIVE the worst is behind you, Rebekah.

I had to cut two different lines that I really liked from something at work -- lines that were good but not right for what the scene needed to do anymore.

But this week, I found new places for them. Very different bits, but they will live on as things some players see nevertheless, and that makes me really happy.

Today I am officially done with my school semester! Chemo starts a week from tomorrow and will be every 2 weeks from then until... well, until I tell them I can't take it anymore, basically.

So, tomorrow through Sunday, I am taking a week's vacation. With a few small and necessary exceptions, for an entire week I am not going to do ONE thing I don't want to do. I am going to be an absolute brat, and Matt is going to spoil me rotten, and I am extremely okay with this.

I got to use write "importune" in a line of dialogue today, and that was never on the bucket list, but it still tickled me to do.

Recommendations for well-written, multi-season non-anime TV series with healing, uplifting vibes? From any era - just let me know where it can be streamed.

(Animated potentially okay if it doesn't have the 'anime look,' which for whatever reason I'm allergic to. Disney and first season Dragon Prince are good examples of animated things my eyeballs like.)

PaladinBard,
@PaladinBard@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker I recall you being okay with Steven Universe and possibly She-Ra from perspective of being an animated but not having the anime look. If so, I very much enjoyed Owl House.

I suspect Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Chat Noir WOULD be too anime, which is a shame, because it’s really wholesome.

Have you watched Derry Girls? It always ends on positive notes, even if the family gets grumpy at each other.

On my walk home, in the grass along the sidewalk I saw a series of about nine or ten empty bottles, all different shapes, sizes, and colors, just lying in the grass, each about five feet apart and approximately the same distance from the sidewalk.

It looked like someone was asked to provide "litter" set dressing but had never actually seen litter in real life. It was so strange.

PaladinBard,

@mishellbaker Was it Today's Teens? You know how they are, with their Tick Tocks and their Littering.

Just had an awesome meeting with my creative partner, who has started building the palace from my novel in Minecraft. It looked AMAZING so far.

(He's an architect and had already done a 3D model of it for me at the very beginning of our working relationship but now he's making this version for fun and it's so DETAILED.)

Hey @PaladinBard - did you write something up at some point about the pros of GMing 13th Age, or has my aging memory failed me completely? (If you did not, I am not pestering you to do so, I just thought I remembered something, and if it existed, I wanted to read it :)

PaladinBard,
@PaladinBard@wandering.shop avatar

@grrrr_shark You know, now that you say that, I would swear I've done so, but I've got no idea where. Am checking my Google drive to see if it's floating around anywhere.

PaladinBard,
@PaladinBard@wandering.shop avatar

@grrrr_shark But briefly:
Pros:

  • Monsters are easy to prep and just about run themselves thanks to how abilities trigger.
  • How skills work makes it easy for everyone to be useful outside of combat.
  • Fights tended (for me) to be shorter than D&D 5e fights of equal complexity while still feeling just as fun.
PaladinBard,
@PaladinBard@wandering.shop avatar

@grrrr_shark
Cons:

  • Icon rules are a bit fiddly and not really explained (they're working on this in the next edition)
  • If you have a table that prefers grids and specific measurements, the "just sort of wing it" approach to combat movement/distances may annoy folks.
  • If you have a group entirely used to D&D 5e, there are just enough differences to sometimes bug people who are used to saves being THIS WAY, for example.
PaladinBard,
@PaladinBard@wandering.shop avatar

@grrrr_shark For me, it was easier to run and easier to play -- the pros far outweighed the cons, because the cons were things I was prepared to fudge anyway.

Players who like the big huge spell lists and emphasis on discrete equipment of 5e may be annoyed, but that's not me, so I can't speak to it. (I don't hate 5e. Those are just things I don't love about it when I play.)

Parenting, in my experience, involves a lot of getting caught completely off guard by unexpected questions. I have said, "I really don't know, buddy. Remind me when we get home and I'll look it up" or "uh wow I need a little bit to prepare for this conversation, can we talk about it tomorrow?" sooo many times.

BUT NOT TODAY.

K: Have you ever read a book called Pride and Prejudice?
Me, laughing: Um, yes.
K: Can you tell me about it?
Me: I AM SO READY FOR THIS.

Wildly popular songs are rarely about anything other than some variety of "I wanna hit that" and then one day along comes this bouncy lil overplayed song and not only is it not about that but

I've been making things again! Just for-fun things, but it really helps me feel like a human being.

What kind of things do you make? Food? Stories? Crafts? Tell me everything.

PaladinBard,
@PaladinBard@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker I make stories. I make new lyrics to existing music that make my friends laugh. I make play-by-post RPG characters that make other players laugh. Recently, I’ve made new martial arts forms from stuff I already know. All of it is a source of joy.

I'll be doing a full writeup after I talk to my oncologist on Thursday, but the CT scan says "no acute findings" and there are a lot of "unremarkables" on it. Some very minor (and asymptomatic - I've been doing daily cardio) scarring in my lungs that may have been caused by the chemo since I have never smoked and had no recent respiratory infections. But nothing that looks like cancer at this time.

This should mean at least 3 more months free of treatment!

Matt and I were just talking about how pretty much every male romantic lead in a musical seems just... really terrible in the exact same way. The Marius/Raoul effect. Just... slices of white bread off the same loaf with the crusts cut off and like... a little wet

PaladinBard,
@PaladinBard@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker Okay so YES. Some of this feels like the product of most musicals being written by guys, and the Basic Guy is either the author's stand-in or the "I guess we need a young likable guy, too," that they aren't as interested in as the older problematic guy who's driving the story. (Like Valjean or Sweeney Todd.)

My 13yo just saw Les Mis for the first time and was deeply moved but couldn't remember anyone's names. So she just finished telling me how she teared up when Fountain Pen died but really lost it at the death of that one girl, Ebony or Panini or whatever it was.

PaladinBard,
@PaladinBard@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker This reminded me that one of my trunk novels has a minor character named Eponyme, and she spent most of the novel pining tragically and also trying to name things after herself.
