PeterPoopshit,

I do this. Random ebay junk is both better and cheaper than a raspberry pi. When I first started doing home server stuff, I had the option between an Athlon XP and a raspberry pi and the Athlon XP delivered better performance (I tried both).

PeterPoopshit,

This is the only idea aggressive enough to work which is why they will never let it happen

PeterPoopshit,

This. When YouTube finally succeeds in making it impossible for anyone to use their website without watching ads, they probably still won’t succeed in preventing people from downloading for offline viewing. When this happens I’m going to invest in making scripts that autodownload stuff ahead of time and I’ll only watch whatever videos are in my home network.

Im not watching their brainwash bullshit ass propaganda. I’ll find other stuff to do for entertainment before I give in to ads.

How do y'all deal with sleep states on modern laptops?

Most very recent laptops no longer support S3 sleep which used to be the default for a long time. On my old laptop it allowed me to just close the lid in the evening and open it again in the morning, and it would only loose a negligible amount of charge during that time....

PeterPoopshit,

Not sure what distro you’re using but try the liquirox kernel. I did that one time on a really stubborn laptop and managed to get both the HDMI and the suspend feature working.

Using mainline or something to ensure I’m up to date on the latest kernel has never solved a single issue in my entire history of trying but using liquirox worked one time.

PeterPoopshit,

Cilantro tastes like soap to me. I like it. I can eat as much of soap flavored plant as I want without shitting out bubbles.

PeterPoopshit,

A lot of stuff. All streaming services. I even boycott entire us states, at least where applicable.

PeterPoopshit,

One time I got downvoted to oblivion and then followed and harassed for saying that employers shouldn’t be allowed to drug test for thc… In r/lsd of all places. I still don’t know what that was about. Did I accidently trigger the “everyone dogpile this guy” bot algorithm, maybe in a different comment? Do lsd users just think they’re better than everyone else just because past use of lsd can’t really be drug tested for? This happened like a year ago and I’m still dumbfounded.

PeterPoopshit,

Dang I thought proton was older than that. I remember playing No Man’s Sky on Linux around the time it was released on pc. I don’t remember running a pirated copy of NMS just so I could make it run on wine but maybe I was. (you used to have to do that whether you owned the game or not if you wanted to play on Linux).

PeterPoopshit,

Interesting. I think joules are dumb and hate seeing them in games like factorio. I’m sure joules are better in applications that don’t concern the average person but I’m a random idiot not a scientist at nasa. Just show me kilowatt hours so I don’t have to do math in my head. 1 joule is 1 watt second already there’s no point in making things more complicated.

PeterPoopshit,

Let’s make a shitty unit trade. We’ll change all watt hour units to joules in exchange for completely banning bits per second as a unit of bandwidth speed. Converting megabit per second to the actually usable unit of megabytes per second in my head is far more infuriating than any amount of joule shenanigans. Any takers?

PeterPoopshit,

Cinnamon is like classic Gnome but modernized and better. Out of the box, it’s more usable than Gnome 3 even with a lot of extensions.

Best cameras that can connect to a home lab?

I’m looking for security cameras that will integrate with my home server and nas. I want ones that record to my nas without some BS subscription service, and ideally run FOSS server logic I can deploy on my server. I’ve got one camera now that sorta does what I want, except the software isn’t FOSS and I’ve been unable to...

PeterPoopshit,

I’ve tried to use esp 32 cameras before. First issue, there are no esp32 cameras that either don’t have ir filters or have ir filters that can be removed. I finally found an Amazon seller that doesn’t glue the camera lenses together very thoroughly and once you break them open, the ir filter is in a place that can be removed if you’re patient enough with an exacto knife.

The other major issue is that esp 32s generate so much heat they eventually melt everything I put them in. You can’t leave them naked because even if it doesn’t rain, they still stop working after only a few days of being outside.

I really hope someone else has figured out a better way to use esp 32 cameras for home security because the only other choices are a) those chinese ones that don’t give you control over the rtsp stream (you can only use their spyware infested smartphone app) or b) those absurdly overpriced ones that don’t even come with night vision most of the time.

PeterPoopshit,

Night vision. You can remove the ir filter and then buy or make an infared lightbar and get good night vision that way.

They won’t overheat if you don’t put them in an enclosure or case but this makes them more suseptible to damage. I bet a small pc fan blowing through a custom made 3d printed or wood box would be enough to offset it.

PeterPoopshit,

I’m poor and I hate stupid bullshit. The only way to personalize ads for me is to make them go away.

When the fuck did a mobile hotspot become something you have to pay extra for?

It’s my goddamn motherfucking mobile data and MY PHONE. I should be able to use it however I want. My wifi went down because the greedy, cunt-faced shitbags at Comcast stole taxpayer subsidies to enrich themselves instead of actually providing the service we’re paying for. I tried to switch to a mobile hotspot and my phone...

PeterPoopshit,

Is there a guide on how to do this? I have a rooted phone with custom rom and unlocked bootloader.

PeterPoopshit, (edited )

Computer parts are expensive. My pc specs are more of a downward graph. ddr3 ftw. Am4 b550 stuff isn’t good enough to warrant an upgrade and b650 motherboards with their stupid overpriced ddr5 ram are too expensive to be worth it.

I already have ddr4 ram from my “old” but newer motherboard that stopped working (before someone points out ram prices and is like uhm ACKTUALLY)

PeterPoopshit,

Pretty soon you’ll be required to get one of these as a condition of employment. Just watch.

PeterPoopshit,

The more people that try to avoid these kinds of jobs, the sooner someone in power will change the rules.

PeterPoopshit,

I kept my ass shaved during the pandemic. Only had to use like 2 squares of single ply toilet paper per shit. Ass hair is a conspiracy by toilet paper companies to sell more toilet paper.

PeterPoopshit,

It does cause chafing if you do a lot of walking around within the first few days, although for me all the chafing only ever happens in my crotch under my balls (I might as well shave everything since shaving the asshole is 99% of the work). Powder solves it but also if your job doesn’t require you to do miles and miles of waking a day, it’s a non issue.

Imho, the advantages of shaving my ass outweigh the negatives. Wasting toilet paper is bad. Streaks smell. The problem with bidets is you’ll only ever get to use one if you install one in your home. People always tend to refute every claim that it’s more hygienic, and while I’m not here to argue that, there are situations where not having all that crotch hair results in less body stench since it can be wiped easily. For further b/o control you can apply deodorant to your balls and that patch of skin above your dick and it’s really effective as long as you aren’t planning on getting your dick sucked.

Everyone is free to do whatever they want with their ass hair but every comment section about ass shaving is full of people that think it’s bad. It’s important people are aware of both sides of the story.

PeterPoopshit,

The Lemmy.world server runs on a 16mhz 386dx and has 16mb of ram. It just does that sometimes.

PeterPoopshit,

If Harambe was still alive he’d already be dead

PeterPoopshit,

The real question is: where can you buy a printer that prints into toilet paper?

PeterPoopshit,

I like Shatter because it can move horizontally. I don’t know what disadvantages that comes with but I feel like a lot more of those 4 wheel vertical spinners would do better if their wheels were on the bottom unexposed and they could strafe around stuff.
