America needs to talk about the right’s ‘Red Caesar’ plan for U.S. dictatorship (www.inquirer.com)

The incredible scenes this week on Capitol Hill — leaving the U.S. House without a speaker and promising an autumn of sheer chaos in Congress — marked a rapid escalation of the downward spiral of American democracy. And most of the folks who get paid big bucks to understand politics could not make any sense of it....

PostmodernPythia,

Fascists have a tendency of killing anyone in their way, so I wouldn’t bet on them waiting their “turn.”

Also, I want us to be fair to Morlocks. In addition to eating the Eloi, Morlocks provided the labor that kept the Eloi comfortable. The right provides no such advantages.

Fox News' Greg Gutfeld suggests "civil war" because "elections don't work" (www.salon.com)

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld erupted with dark rhetoric during Thursday’s broadcast of “The Five,” appearing to advocate for a new American civil war because “elections don’t work” and the nation is in “peril and chaos," the Daily Beast reports.

PostmodernPythia,

Our electoral system (USA) is a failure, but using that as “proof” elections don’t work is kind of like trying to use the fact that you can’t run Baldur’s Gate 3 on an Apple II as “proof” that computing doesn’t work. It’s not a serious argument, it’s admission of a personal thirst for authoritarianism. Anyone who wants to lick boots is welcome to hire a dominatrix and leave the rest of us out of it.

PostmodernPythia,

Every right-wing accusation is a confession.

PostmodernPythia,

Someone clearly doesn’t attend a lot of comedy shows. 😛

PostmodernPythia, (edited )

I was pretty much with you until you got to foreign powers invading. Seems unlikely. At worst, we’d end up with the two strongest armies on earth (both American) fighting each other. I can’t think of another country on earth who would think it worth it to cross an ocean and occupy the territory. If he have a civil war, there’s a good chance China will try and take Taiwan, but I don’t see California, or even Hawaii, as worth invading in terms of RoI, economic or political.

PostmodernPythia,

They aren’t interested in governing a ham sandwich. It’s easier to make the ham sandwich impossible to govern by soaking it in poison.

PostmodernPythia,

We already tried ignoring these fools. We got January 6th for our troubles. I think it’s time for a plan B.

PostmodernPythia,

I’ve thought we were fucked since the early 2000s, so I’m pretty sure the right wing media didn’t convince me. It was the telltale Constitution beating under the floorboards. Also, I assume you’re aware that your enemies can want you to believe things that also happen to be true?

PostmodernPythia, (edited )

I’d rather be armed give them something to fearmonger about than have them use completely fabricated fearmongering to attack me when I’m unarmed.

Edit: If your hatred of guns overwhelms your fear of armed fascists, you might want to read some of the period responses to the activities surrounding the 1923 Munich Putsch. And if you think free (I won’t pretend they’re fair) elections can’t lead to authoritarianism, you may want to look at the 1932 German elections.

PostmodernPythia,

The constitution only applies when the billionaires giving them huge bribes say it does. Couldn’t be simpler.

PostmodernPythia,

I’m guessing OP means it’s harder now than before the corporate siloing of the social web, not harder than handing out business cards on the street.

What is your skincare routine like?

I have terrible skin and have always wanted to follow a basic skincare routine, but thanks to ADHD I am lucky if I remember to even splash water on my face in the morning. Usually I will buy a product, use it a few times, then get bored of it and forget it exists. So I’m curious, what are your skincare routines like? How did...

PostmodernPythia,

Micellar water is your friend. Find some reusable cotton rounds, put micellar water on one, take the nastiness off your face without a sink. It it perfect? No. Better than nothing? Yes. I wash my face in the shower every morning. Would it be better if I did it with lukewarm water over the sink? Yes. Would that happen? 🤣🤣🤣. And the only way I remember SPF is by putting it at the core of a morning makeup routine. I can see whether I put on lipstick; can’t really see or feel my face SPF. (Etude Sunprise Mild SPF 50+++. Not for dry skin.). Visual reminders are great.

PostmodernPythia,

I mean, yeah. Their supporters see sexual and gender differences as degeneracy that will bring down civilization. Of course they support using tax money that way.

PostmodernPythia,

Children are people, not status symbols for their parents.

PostmodernPythia,

Would you feel differently if they weren’t showing real estate ads for homes in largely white communities to PoC? Because that’s the same principle, given that that’s why the law was made. I’m not upset that we’re enforcing nondiscrimination law; we don’t do it enough.

PostmodernPythia,

Mine’s so bad I can’t even play FPSs without getting sick, but being very open about that means I hear from a lot of people with less severe systems who will power through their nausea for short sessions with friends to avoid embarassment, which is why I think the way I do.

PostmodernPythia,

You wouldn’t usually know where people are being silenced, since that’s kind of the point of silencing people. And if you’re in environments that celebrates sex workers, that’s your bubble, not the world.

PostmodernPythia,

The fact that South Park discussed a point isn’t itself an argument against that point.

PostmodernPythia,

Because more people are coerced into motherhood and it makes you uncomfortable?

PostmodernPythia,

People know that and still make the choice. Plus, your schadenfreude at the prospect of future suffering for former sex workers is fucking gross. You just want see people (women, specifically, I’d bet) who have sex you don’t like get harmed. That’s fucked up.

we shouldn't promote individual responsibility *instead* of corporate accountability. we should promote individual responsibility *because it leads to* corporate accountability (slrpnk.net)

Not my OC but what I’ve believed for years: there’s no conflict between reducing your own environmental impact and holding corporations responsible. We hold corps responsible for the environment by creating a societal ethos of environmental responsibility that forces corporations to serve the people’s needs or go bankrupt...

PostmodernPythia,

Ok, but the reality is, as long as the rich are regularly taking corporate jets, and we know government’s not going to act on it, why would John/Jane Q. Public cut their own waste? It’s going to make their lives measurably worse without real benefit to them or climate change. I understand why one might, but we are not going to convince enough more people to “do the right thing” to make a difference if that’s the argument.

PostmodernPythia,

They already do that in most jurisdictions. Solve the root problem, and the surface problem will be fixed. Only fix the surface, and…well, it’s like weeding dandelions.

PostmodernPythia,

I’m sure both sides are actually doing this. It’s just that only one side is actually being persecuted and forced to leave their homes.
