Homes and real-estate increasing in value should be considered inflation

Housing is something people need, and is similarly a necessity like food or electricity. It needs a lot of money to keep in a livable shape, plus constant attention, and will lose its value if just left in place. As such it’s not an investment, unless the market isn’t working like it’s supposed to....

RBWells,

As others have noted, it is included in inflation measures here.

But on your point about price appreciation being a negative factor not positive, I’m with you. I am not helped by my house being “worth more”, it just raises my cost in taxes and insurance and makes my city shittier when the people who work here can’t live here because they are priced out.

I talk with the husband about this - we bought our house at what I thought was the peak of some bubble, thought we overpaid. But not even 5 years later it would sell for twice that, so he thinks we got a good deal. I’m valuing the utility of housing as shelter, it can’t be “worth” more than 30% of two average monthly net-pay for someone working here, right? By that measure we overpaid, can only barely afford it with two good incomes (us) plus two part time incomes (our teenage kids) He’s valuing it like an investment and by that measure we got a good deal, we bought something for x and now it’s worth 2x.

Ok, I will use yours for this one. So from:

*_Is it cheating if I use a drink I mostly got from you and posted an earlier version of here? Lol So I’ll re-use the lemon juice. 2oz of Knob Creek Bourbon (or choose your favorite, I’m not the boss of you) 1oz of Drillaud’s raspberry liquor 1oz of lemon juice 1oz of Amaro Montenegro

Shake with ice and pour, then use a smoke with a Cocktail smoker (I’ve found apple wood chips works really well with this).

It’s makes for a great spring and early summer cocktail, refreshing and a bit sweet but not overly so._*

I take the Amaro Montenegro and make an adjusted Paper Plane riff:

2oz Evan Williams bottled-in-bond

1oz lime juice (since lemon is out of bounds)

1oz Amaro Montenegro

1/2 oz Aperol, 1/2 oz Campari.

Shake and pour into chilled coupe.

ETA: I made it! It’s delicious!

RBWells,

I am an avid reader of books, and not a movie buff, but I stand on this hill with you. The LOTR movies are better than the books.

RBWells,

There are some covers of songs I like much more than the originals, a lot are Bob Dylan but also:

Neverwhere was a TV show before it was a book, I like the book more.

RBWells,

Hope springs eternal in the hearts of women.

RBWells,

No, a correlation between being black and being arrested for weed. In my city, they made the legal status of the drug indeterminate and gave cops DISCRETION on whether to arrest or cite someone for having pot. Not a felony now in any event, misdemeanor or civil citation or nothing but how do you think this discretion will be used?

RBWells,

Yeah I had a chiropractor (the woo woo kind, not the ‘have you been in a car accident’ kind) who could twist my head and make something crack and then I’d get no migraines for a year or more. So I would go back once every year or two when they came back, and he’d do it again. Nothing else has ever worked like that. $40 a year to prevent migraines?

He was older and is retired and I have not ever been able to trust any other chiropractor to be able to do that.

And one time my mom had shoulder pain and her doctor sent her to a chiropractor and they fixed that.

I don’t think it’s magic but also don’t think it’s nothing. Like massage or other physical manipulations it can do some things.

RBWells,

I don’t mind people calling me nerdy. Once overhead someone telling someone else at work that I was “so funny” when generally I keep it in check at work, and that felt complimentary as well.

But one time a yoga teacher told us in a class “you are bigger than you think” and I don’t even know what she meant, my stomach dropped, I felt absolutely awful. And while I am womanly as fuck, absolutely a woman, I dislike being seen as feminine. I don’t like being complimented on looking curvy, softness and squish freaks me out much more than it should. I know people mean those as compliments but they make me want to cry.

RBWells,

A good wife for someone, or for the person speaking? If the former, I probably agree with you. If the latter, I would mention that not all people have that image of a wife as someone defined by being housewife and executive assistant. Husband considers me a good wife because we love each other and I can handle the budget and hold down a job and cook so much better than he can (not a high bar to reach) but we are both adults, he cleans way more than I do, does the shopping at least half the time, we work together. He’d not consider a stereotype of traditional wife a good wife. I don’t know many people who do, come to think of it.

Anyone have luck with a hair growth *inhibitor*? Especially my fellow gentledudes who could be mistaken for sasquatch after skipping a day of shaving.

I’ve heard of things like Nair that make it fall out… if that was a one-and-done solution I’d be all for it, but I’m hoping for something that slows or stops it from growing....

RBWells,

I’m a lady but waxing has certainly changed my experience with shaving lower body. Apparently every time you pull out the hairs, a few give up (as evidenced by all the skinny eyebrows of anyone who survived the 1990s). Over time there are fewer, and the growback is not nearly as itchy as shaving. I have no idea if it’s offered for beards but if so it might get you to the point you could shave comfortably, it did that for me at the other end of my body, it still grows as fast but is not so thick, individual hairs are finer and there are fewer of them.

RBWells,

The places I waxed had very coarse and curly deep rooted hair in sensitive areas and yes it sure hurts, but shaving always caused ingrown hairs and razor burn, it doesn’t really anymore. So like an acute pain instead of a chronic pain I guess.

Lasering probably does the same more efficiently but maybe too efficiently if you want to keep your options open. And it hurts too.

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

@asklemmy

RBWells,

If it’s your mom, then just reply “what?” and she will read what she wrote and figure out it’s not making sense then. I don’t know what autocorrect would make “urgent care house” out of “party at your house” but T9 predictive text once decided I wanted to tell my kids I was at the “slave ring” instead of the “skate rink”. Like of all the ways it could misinterpret “skate” - plate, crate, scale, it landed on slave.

If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully?

Experiencing firsthand how difficult an aging alcoholic, quadriplegic, post stroke, narcissistic, demented or simply ‘nothing’s wrong with me, I can drive, I don’t need those meds, I don’t need to go to a nursing facility’ kinda parent surely gives you some insight on what to do, what not to do and how to prepare for...

RBWells,

My mom stayed fit and walked everywhere, and was a teacher and curious lifelong learner& traveler sort of person and still got dementia before she died. Her mom too. Honestly it terrifies me but there is only so much you can control. I do work out and stay fit and so far so good, I honestly feel great. My hope is that science comes through with a good treatment, and between me & my husband we have a lot of children to hopefully help some if we need it.

RBWells,

I got the chance to ride an ebike at a city event here and it was absolutely delightful, I hate riding a bike but this was like a dream of a bike ride, so comfortable and it actually moved forward so fast with less effort, I loved it. But I think it would be stolen so fast if I chained it anywhere. Like I could ride it to work (they let you park them inside) but not to grab groceries. And they cost as much as a small motorcycle or scooter.

RBWells,

Can I trust my friends, my work, my family? And these agents can’t be everywhere at once? Then I put on running gear, sunglasses, hair in a ponytail, jog like I’m just white lady exercising, to the house of my family member and ask for help, get a car borrowed from their neighbor and get on the train north to where I have more family, hoping I can stay one step ahead until I figure out what the heck is going on and handle it somehow.

RBWells,

I was almost 25, in the 1990s, singing along in my car to Elton John, confidently belting out “"Love, I feel it in my hands, I can tell by the things I would do with another man”" when I suddenly realized that it was unlikely a guy would have a hit song about what he’d do with a guy in the 60s or 70s. Even as a little kid I’d known Elton John was gay, and hadn’t really been brought up to think that was weird (thank you, mom and dad and your theater friends) .

I looked up the lyrics and it’s love lies bleeding in my hands, it kills me to think of you with another man and the name of the fucking song is love lies bleeding, I didn’t know that either.
