Rexelpitlum,

Remember playing this quite some time at a friends. But I think we played Wing Commander even more for some reason.

And way before that: Elite on a C64. That blow my mind at the time. Connected lines in 3D! Wow. And yes, I am old.

But my favorite of all time has to be Privateer II - The Darkening. Relatively open world with a cool background story and incredibly immersive with fitting prerendered cutscene visuals and lots of real actors doing the keyscenes.

Rexelpitlum,

I still have my old Lenovo X61T which is nearly as old. With maxed out RAM (4GB) and an SSD it is actually still quite usable (running Linux). I love its great keyboard, that’s the reason I kept it. At some time my kids discovered that it is still able to run Minetest at reduced settings and so it now is part of the occasional LAN-Party when friends are over. Opens my heart to see the old buddy right in the middle of action being used by a bunch of kids that are only slightly over half its age!

Rexelpitlum,

Well, you just have to not use the internet. Just like in the olden times…

I also have an old XP laptop stored away. Its only purpose: Talk to my old photo negative scanner whose software won’t run on more recent OS’s. Only communication with the outside world is by USB memory stick.

Rexelpitlum,

Yes, Orangina is definitly in another league. My first bottle of it practically ruined all other soft drinks for me, can’t stand them anymore. Besides certain kinds of sparkling mineral water it is practically the only carbonated stuff I drink once in a while. Oh, and I also like Bionade which is also not so sweet and slightly bitter tasting because of its malt basis. But Bionade is probably even harder to get than Orangina in most parts of the world…

Rexelpitlum,

Anybody watched the video? What’s the verdict?

Rexelpitlum, (edited )

lf it is a region lock than even if you use a VPN you propably won’t be able to buy anything.

Unless you also happen to own a japanese credit card. And a shipping address in Japan for physical stuff.

(Sad European noices…)

Rexelpitlum,

Saltatio sure made an interesting progression.

I remember being to one of their earlier concerts 20 years ago when they had just discovered that sometimes it is nice to use the ocassional electric guitar. Was in a small youth club not much bigger than my flat. The bagpipes sounds felt like never-ending multidirectional pressure waves in this setting.

Forgot about them since than for some reason until my GF surprised me with tickets for a concert last year. And boy this has been a surprise.

And I actually love their new stuff. Rockier but they kept the bagpipes and the phantastic live performance!

Rexelpitlum,

Should have kept the original name though.

“Bierstadt” would have been awesome!

Rexelpitlum,

Why wasn’t it possible to bring them to Canada?

Rexelpitlum,

TIL: Vehicle exchange programs are a thing.

Never heard of them before. Maybe because Germany seems to be really relaxed in this regard. You may have to pay some taxes (e.g. VAT if new) when importing, that’s it. No country restrictions that I know of.

Rexelpitlum,

Don’t quite get it…

Is it something like geohashing on a physical map?

What are the symbols for? (I guess you didn’t actually encounter 20 bears?)

Rexelpitlum,

Ok, so you don’t do actual hiking, now I think I get the basic idea!

I was propably confused by your “take it on next trip” remark…

Rexelpitlum,

No, my fault, I only knew such stuff with real maps up to now.

E.g. a local natural park did something really similar, adding a bunch of plant and animal pictograms to their map as a mini game. You had to count how many you saw. Did really help to not letting the kids get bored during the hike.

And also there is geohashing which is kind of a “roll your destination” game…

Rexelpitlum,

Die haben versucht das Apple der Radbranche zu werden. Cooles Design + Marke + Vendor-Lock-In.

Hat nicht funktioniert.

Rexelpitlum,

Sieht gut aus. Wann Kinostart? Die Kühe und die Schaf-Kino-Szene sind phantastisch!

Jetzt wo ich drüber nachdenke, gab es da nicht auch vor kurzem einen Heidi Splatter-Film?

Arthur C. Clark once said "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic". What technologies do we have today that would look like magic to people from the past?

I think lasers are pretty wack when you think about them through this lens. A small, wand-like object in your hand can make light appear from seemingly nowhere. If it’s powerful enough it can set things on fire or blind people. Not to mention larger ones like laser cutters or the LLD, used to destroy missiles midflight. Thats...

Rexelpitlum,

l can think of one magic-technology that appeared during my lifetime:

E-Ink-Readers.

I mean, script suddenly appearing out of thin air on flat, solid surfaces? WTF?

I even studied enginering in the early 90’s and would not have been able to come up with a technological explaination if I had encountered one of those back then…

Rexelpitlum,

But that’s exactly the point.

E-Ink Displays would have been unable to explain for me from my thoroughly * informed * perspective as an HF and digital communications student.

Active displays in one form or another had been around for 50 years or so at that time. So have been practially all base technology concepts of the much mentioned smartphones. Nothing magical about an optimized version, just extrapolation.

But E-Ink? A * brand new * technology * without prior art * rapidly emerging from obscure theoretical concept to widespread use within just 15 years or so…

I am actually still a little bit awed each time I switch on one of those…

Rexelpitlum,

lt says that the games are available on Steam.

Is this mandatory or am I also able to download them without a Steam account?

Rexelpitlum,

Didn’t know that changed. That’s crap.

Rexelpitlum,

Excuse me sir, are you living in the past?

Rexelpitlum,

Genau das. Warum bloß? Ernsthaft, das hasst jeder, den ich kenne. Wer um alles in der Welt mag das??

Oder sind das andere Gründe, warum das drauf ist?

Was hab ihr für Lichter an eurem Fahrrad? German

Rexelpitlum,

So… what is the actual answer?

Rexelpitlum,

l really like that one. Probably not the solution but nonetheless a great riddle! … Except the broom of course, that’s silly…

Rexelpitlum,

ls it glowing because of the decay radioactivity? How is the Tritium contained? Some kind of solid compound?
