How about GApps tho? You know, the piece of spyware Google embeds in Android’s system partition?

FYI:
Private open source alternative to it,
is MicroG

What do you think about OXEM?

OXEN is a fork of Monero that uses proof of stake instead of proof of work and supports instant transactions. Lokinet (onion router, like tor) and Session (messanger) are build on top of it. I just discovered it a week ago and I’m suprised that I hadn’t heard of it before. In my opinion It’s a better Monero (except that...

Afaik, PoS (Proof of Stake) would weaken the chain, as it leads to more centralization, which makes it more vulnerable to attacks.

How did Lemmy World become the default instance?

World was already the biggest by far when I first started lurking back in July, and it’s just getting more dominant. Before, there was quite some diversity in the distribution of generic communities, but nowadays the vast majority of posts that reach the top are from over there....

Rikj000,

You can’t blame people for the (sometimes) limited brainset they receive.

If it’s unclear to the majority, then it’s Lemmy which should aim to simplify the process of joining/explaining it to the general population.

Federated software is awesome, but sadly the recruiting process is still too difficult for many.

If it’s unclear which app to download / which instance to join, then that’s where a lot of registrations are being missed out on.

Heya Antik :D

Inside the 'arms race' between YouTube and ad blockers (www.engadget.com)

From the article: “In some ways, the current situation has spurred an arms race. YouTube has inadvertently improved ad blockers, as the new knowledge and techniques gained from innovating within the YouTube platform are also applicable to other ad and tracking systems.”

May the best product win (being AdBlockers ofc, lol)

In the meantime, you can spread public awareness about the issues with FIAT currencies around the globe.

I’m mostly talking about:

  • Deficit spending: Where your central bankers are allowed to lend out more then they have, but ask interest for it.
  • Fractional banking: Where your regional bankers are allowed to lend out X% of money that you deposit.

In laymans terms “printing money”.

Both lead to eventual but guaranteed hyper inflation due to increases in the money supply.

See for yourself by looking up the EUM3, GBM3 and USM2 charts, which visualize the total circulating money supply.

Economics 101:

  • Chart goes up? More in circulation, each unit worth less, due to abundancy
  • Chart goes down? Less in circulation, each unit worth more, due to scarcity.

If you look up the charts, you’ll see them generally rising over-time. With a small periodic dip here/there, but generally rising.

However, we need a system that has a frigging straight line… Instead of centralized private entities (ECB, FED, BOE) pulling the strings as to where it goes.

My hope lies in crypto for this, which humanity is doing a good job of, of ruining it’s reputation. But my faith in the OG crypto principles/projects remain.

Big tech writes the equivalent of digital heroin.

The longer they can keep you on their platforms,
the more they can data-farm you,
the more data they have on you,
the more they can sell about you / earn on you.

Detox yourself from your bad heroin addiction,
by switching to fair FOSS (Free Open Source Software) alternatives.

E.g. Use Invidious, Grayjay or NewPipe instead of YouTube.

Rikj000,
@Rikj000@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Have not used FreeTube myself.
However it appears to be reputable / decent.

Rule of thumb:

  • Steer clear of proprietary / closed source software
  • Always aim to use open source software if possible

The day that happens, will be the day I delete my account.

No amount of free games can justify the amount of spy-ware Google/Tencent will bring to the table.

Rikj000,

Oh my, did not know that, but now I’m srsly tempted to already delete my account D:

Now they can also train their gray area trained model (trained upon our Github projects without consolidating with us if it was alright to do so) further!

By spying on every command you type in your CLI, and phoning home to MS about it, to train it further.

I guarantee you,
If you use it, you’ll be their free training monkey.

And once they used you for free,
and the product improved enough,
they’ll subscription charge you forever to make use of it.

Rikj000,
@Rikj000@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Not on my machine. Or at least, I do everything humanly possible to limit it.

Either through:

  • Switching to FOSS alternatives
  • Custom patches applied to proprietary binaries.
  • Blocking network access for certain processes

I don’t expect everyone to become a privacy expert though.

However I do believe systematic privacy is important, and that we should aim for better privacy laws to keep the intellectual property of the average user safe.

Well, the post was about copilot,
so that’s what my comment was about.

But I agree, fck all big-tech software.

If it’s not produced by a non-profit as open source, then it’s not worth your time.

(Due to anti-consumer practices, spy-ware/telemetry or vunerabilities to worry about)

Remove already backed up folders in Google Photos.

My device, Xiaomi 11 Lite NE 5G, is currently running on Android 14 (PixelOS). There’s unlimited Google Photos backup. I have turned on device folder backups. While Google Photos app provides an option to delete all the photos in default camera folder which have been uploaded, there’s no such option for device folders like...

Rikj000,

Consider backing up in NextCloud, instead of sending your private pictures to a spy-ware giant who will sell it to the best bidder :P

If the product is free, but not open source, then you('r data) is likely the product to be sold / made money upon.

Google software = Spyware with some features on top.

I hate any form of spyware.
I hate how they pampered it with a euphemism and called spy-ware “telemetry”.
I hate how sheeple are sticking their head in the sand regarding the spy-ware a.k.a. “telemetry”.
I hate how we still don’t have enough laws protecting our digital privacy.
I hate how the world appears to be turning into a massive surveillance state…

Please come up for your rights for privacy,
by saying no to spy-ware.

Hello,

I’ve been a happy Belgian LineageOS + OnePlus power user for years now :)

However,
I only run with MicroG (LineageOSforMicroG to be exact) + Magisk (root),
which makes things a bit harder.

Itsme is a pain in the ass when it comes down to root,
they really don’t allow it.
You’ll find yourself in a never ending battle,
of you working around root detection methods, and them patching them.
If you’re up for it, you can join that battle on the XDA Developers forum though :)

However, luckily you don’t really need Itsme!
You can log in on CSAM,
and there enable username + password + 2FA authentication.
Since I’ve done that, I haven’t needed Itsme anymore!

Belfius is rather chill then it comes down to root.
They just show a pop-up about it,
which you can dismiss, and call it a day.

Can’t vouch for other banking apps,
however if they complain,
the XDA Developers forum is your friend

Payconiq doesn’t work on MicroG though,
due to the GApps QrCode library not being implemented in MicroG yet.
This also affects my ability to scan QrCodes in Belfius,
so I just save contacts, and do direct payments without QrCodes instead.

GApps is a piece of spy-ware in my opinion.
However if you’re willing to install that instead of MicroG on your LineageOS,
then you should not run into such QrCode scanning issues.

MicroG is a light weight open source implementation of GApps,
which does respect your privacy!

Magisk is an awesome piece of open source software,
allowing you to gain root access,
and modify the working of your Android through modules,
without doing permanent changes to the /system partition.

However if you’re able/willing to live without this,
you should run into even less issues / complaining apps.

Or you could choose to dive onto XDA Developers forum again,
to learn on how to hide your root + pass SafetyNet.

TLDR
If you install GApps, and do not root,
you should pass SafetyNet, no apps should complain,
and everything should work.

Waydroid/Weston start and stop script for Mint and others

In order to get an Android-only app working on a desktop computer I installed Weston and Waydroid which worked, but as I (and the target machine) run Mint 21 it’s not as simple as just running Waydroid and having it work, plus there is no way to close out Waydroid from within itself. In order to make it easier to start and...

Hi, I’ve been struggling with similar things lately.

So I spent the day writing out a launcher tool similar to yours, but a bit more full featured :)

Check it out at: https://github.com/Rikj000/XWaydroid

Right now it only works for KWin_Wayland though,
which in my experience has been more stable / easy to work with compared to Weston/Cage.

However I’m open to merge in support for them too :D

True open source projects like LibreWolf, Ungoogled Chromium > Sketchy world of Brave

Rikj000,

I switched to LibreWolf after I learned that Waterfox was/is ran by an advertisement company.

Today they should be independant again, however my trust in them is forever lost.
