[CROSS POST] Hardwired, imo, is probably the most CYBER+PUNK cyberpunk novel I've read yet, superseding Neuromancer. Highly recommended. (dataterm.digital)

It's the same as the city, Sarah knows, the same hierarchy of power, beginning with the blocs in the orbits and ending with people who might as well be the fieldmice in front of the blades of the harvester, pointless, countless lives in the path of a structure that can't be stopped. She feels the anger coiling around her like...

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Hardwired was awesome! I really liked how it took place outside of the big cities for the most part. A lot of cyberpunk just stays in the city limits. Mega City 1 basically has anything outside of the (admittedly huge) city completely unlivable.

Making close friends as an adult

Hi everyone! I'm in my late 20s and I've been reminiscing on my young adult life and what I like/don't like. One point that has been coming up for me is close, vulnerable friendships. I used to have a few friends who I was very close to a few years ago, who I could talk to about deep life stuff, big emotions, vulnerable feelings...

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I've got to second TTRPGs. You have to be somewhat vulnerable to play. You're basically playing make believe, you have to be unselfconscious. It forces you to be somewhat open and accepting.

If you're more analytically minded look for board game cafes or groups. Playing a cooperative board game is almost as good of a friend finding hack as TTRPGs.

If your hobbies are more solitary then look for or create groups. Crocheting or knitting? Find a group where everyone is doing it together. It's like parallel play. This could also work for neurodivergent folks.

One thing to keep in mind is that adults are more discerning about friendships. We know what we want now so it might have to be a bit of a numbers game. But one you have a core group the momentum seems to build. Best of luck and don't give up! Everyone deserves solid homies.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Gunship rules! If you're looking for low orbit cyberpunk God is an Astronaut. I really liked the Americana music in Hardspace: Shipbreaker but that's kind of proto cyberpunk.

There's always post rock staples like Godspeed You Black Emperor for more of a desolate abandoned town on the outside of the megalopolis.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

What about a tardigrade (water bear)? They're little, scrappy and can survive in space.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

It's not a good one but the first time I felt existential dread was playing Missile Command in the Atari 2600. I was about 8 and realized that the game only ends when all of your cities are destroyed and life is extinguished. No matter how I tried or how good I got the game would end in a devastation.

On a good note, I remember skipping a party to play ocarina of time. I thought I would regret skipping the party, nah. OoT was and is still better.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

A Short Hike has dialog and a shorter play time but you can just ignore that and soar around the island. It's got an isometric view with a pixel art style. I really enjoy it. I play it when I'm hung over.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

My worst game was North and South in the NES. We were only allowed to buy the "budget" games. Some were bangers like Bubble Bobble and some were stinkers like North and South. It was a half assed port of a two player strategy Amiga game boiled down to some bad mini games. 2/10, would not recommend.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Pontypool was so good. It's about a radio station during the zombie apocalypse. So they're torn between reporting and staying safe.

What's an inexpensive or low-quality item that you ended up loving and keeping for years?

I bought a lift-top coffee table from a big box store almost a decade ago. It's entirely particle board and has seen better days cosmetically, but it's probably my single favorite piece of furniture. It's immensely practical for meals, using a laptop, or just bringing your remote/drink/whatever closer to your hand when laying...

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I got a Moka pot. It was like $30 usd. Makes something in-between drip and espresso. I love that little bastard.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I wasn't really blown away by any of them this season. The meta in the first episode was ok. The take of the second episode "true crime sucks for the victims!" was just so obvious, yeah we know.

The astronauts one was pretty good but really slow. Mazey Day was more V/H/S than Black Mirror. Demon 79 had a great vibe.

Now that I've seen I Think You Should Leave season 3 and Black Mirror I can cancel again.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

If psychological devastation is something you're looking for you should check out Triangle. It's not as tight and visceral as Possessor but it's pretty good.
