A new misinformation quiz shows that, despite the stereotype, younger Americans have a harder time discerning fake headlines, compared with older generations
I tried looking around for a changelog but I couldn't find one anywhere (let me know if you know where it is, I know you can look at the commits/merged PRs on Codeberg but there's a lot to dig through)....
The argument is that legacy admissions are a criterion being used in lieu of race to achieve racial discrimination. Similar systems were an aggressive part of the Jim Crowe South to prevent blacks from voting when they couldn't make skin color-specific rules anymore, where you would have to prove literacy or your grandfather's ability to vote to get a vote in since they knew that no black person could pass those tests.
It's not the strongest case, but it isn't unreasonable and it has a rational basis. I'm skeptical that even a disinterested court would accept the logic on its face and know that the current court will just wallow in its hypocrisy, but I at least understand the principle.
The defense to it is that these elite universities actively desire diversity, so clearly they are not using legacy admits as a proxy for racial discrimination. There's plenty of evidence that there is a different, corrupt-but-legal purpose for these legacy systems that is not racially motivated.
edit: On the flip-side, if indirectly discriminatory policies like these ARE allowed, it gives the universities a clear path forward to continuations of their AA policies. They just need to replace the race of their applicants with proxies for race that are allowed. Theoretically, this logic could force a standoff -- either policies that indirectly have discriminatory outcomes (defined by who?) are illegal or they aren't. Or else you'd have to somehow prove intention to discriminate before you could find a policy illegal, which is another very complex can of worms that the elite universities could probably get around.
And so, like with everything around this case, it likely won't change any real behavior from the elite universities but will seriously fuck with less affluent ones.
The upvote system is way too rudimentary to work efficiently. The upvote incite people to post to become more popular, not to post more interesting content....
As the saying goes, if everywhere you go it smells like shit, maybe it's time to check your own shoes.
I do agree a reputation tied to a user is not very useful; I've had to deal with trolls and assholes who had amassed several thousands of karma points. It's not a relaible indicator of the quality of the poster.
It’s one thing to have differing views, but I’ve seen enough attempted reddit migrations to be relieved that the popular communities in the fediverse so far haven’t been about crazy racist stuff or other extreme right bullshit....
There's a Lemmy instance perfect for you then: exploding-heads.

Leaning disagree. The best argument I've seen for anonymizing it is having that information appropriated by corporations. Which admittedly they could just gather from your posts if they wanted to.
I personally think making people explain why they downvoted something is more conducive than just....being dogpiled with no explanation. This is not to say confronting someone in an emotionally charged manner is a good thing to do, but if having to downvote out loud makes people think twice because they don't want anyone knowing they disagree with X, maybe that's a good habit to reassess. That and it's legitimately made me analyze whether I'm only doing it to be a dick
It not being visible is a relatively recent online phenomenon that I think has lead to some negative feedback loops on social media.
I treat upvotes and downvotes like I used to treat thumbs up, or thanks, or kudos or whatever on much older platforms; a way to say "I agree" or "I disagree" without adding a crap comment that doesn't add to discussion.
If you're using it as a way to vote on what other people get to see that's a reddit thing and this ain't reddit.
2001 book was great. Arthur C Clarke has always been my favorite author. I think Rendevous with Rama would’ve been a more approachable story to adapt into a movie. Full of mystery and curiosity. Creative direction could go wild on art without changing bay of the books story. Starts with a mystery, reveals bits and bobs in the middle, ends with mystery. Leaves you questioning. Chefs kiss.
Haven’t really kept up with modern sci-fi opinion. So maybe my opinions are popular maybe not.
I believe Ilium and Olympos are part of the greatest sci-fi story ever written. Far better than Dan Simmons Hyperion Cantos. It presents wild and imaginative futuristic ideas with insane scientific basis for them.
so hear me out... not a popular opinion by any stretch of the imagination.. but the real reason manufacturers are doing this is because of how much RF spectral splatter EVs put out (think inverters/switching noise, computers, etc) and it's bad news for ham radio operators that use AM/SSB bands. it's cheaper to ignore the problem than it is to EMI shield everything to reduce the noise floor low enough so that the AM receiver works in the car, otherwise you'll hear a bunch of static/popping/whining from the EV electronics that make the AM radio effectively useless. a similar concern that has since gone away was the battle over BPL [broadband over powerline] for the same reasons in that power lines would be effectively big antennas radiating crap in the AM bands. personally, i'm in favor of keeping AM around if it forces these manufacturers to follow proper EM shielding practices, but again... minority opinion for my own selfish reasons. the FCC doesn't give a shit about ham radio, so it's not looking good.
and it's not an easy problem to solve. proper EMI mitigation is a super tough engineering problem that you can make an entire career out of (and make good money doing so). there are so many sneak paths that can pop up that it turns into a constant game of whack-a-mole... simple things like applying a piece of tape to a cable harness next to a metal plate can either make the product pass or fail a radiated emissions spec....it's crazy. and the automotive industry is so behind in the latest tech, the whole chip shortage thing during covid was because they're using way outdated process nodes that no one wants to invest money in. don't get me wrong, my fellow EEs in automotive do a good job given what they have to deal with, but they don't have the experience in RF like us cellular/radio guys... obviously.
Because currently, it seems like the only thing it's recording are downvotes. Meanwhile upvotes are completely ignored, leading to pretty much every profile I see having a negative reputation....
Yeah I annoyed some shitlibs defending lemmy.ml and I can’t even create an account or read most posts there. I basically said we Americans are as propagandized probably as much as Red-leaning countries’ citizens.

The important thing to understand is that kbin.social and a lemmy instance like lemmy.ml are federated but still different websites. Therefore the magazine /m/technology is different from the lemmy.ml community /c/technology. It's just that you can access lemmy.ml magazines from kbin.social and vice versa.
Across instances, magazines are not uniquely identified by their name, but by their address. The address of the kbin.social magazine /m/technology is technology@kbin.social, whereas the address of /c/technology on lemmy.ml is technology@lemmy.ml. You can subscribe to both from kbin itself. If you're on kbin, just 'technology' is interpreted as technology@kbin.social. So the magazine page for kbin magazines is kbin.social/m/magazineName and the page for magazines from other federated websites is kbin.social/m/magazineName@website.
The growth of Lemmy and Kbin continues with the #redditmigration. Flickr is considering ActivityPub support, and new proposals to help people join the fediverse.
As the fediverse continues to grow, let's reflect on some of the things that we disliked most about posting/lurking on reddit and what we can do differently now that we have a chance to build something new.
downvoting for disagreement. people on reddit treat upvotes/downvotes as agree/disagree, when they really should be used to promote thoughtful and good content, not necessarily what you agree with. If you think someone is participating in a thread properly, and promoting and inviting discussion and making the place better (even if you disagree with them) you should upvote instead.
reddit all too often let "lazy" comments float to the top because they were agreeable with the masses, but low effort.
