ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I have to second The Final Architecture. Lots of action, lots of fleshed out alien species, a good solid crew to follow. It checks all the boxes.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Have you read Children of Time? It's also Tchaikovsky, it doesn't really get space-opera-y until the third book, Children of Memory but it's soooooo good. Soooooo good.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Wow, I hope Paul can defeat the Harkonen, he could do some real good in the galaxy. What they really need is to put their faith in a charismatic leader.

Also, I'm sad that Duncan Idaho died. I feel like if he lived there's no chance he would become insufferable in the distant future.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Stockton Rush is a killer and should be charged posthumously with four counts of negligent homicide. He's just as culpable, if not more, that someone who gets behind the wheel drink and kills their passengers.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

True, the Aussies have been making a good show of it.

A bowl of hocks and barley. This is a hearty meal that will stick to your ribs. (lemmy.ca)

The hock is the leg of the pig above the foot and below the ham/shoulder. When we had our pigs processed we always got the hocks back. We tried to sell them on to our customers but no one wanted them. Most said they didn’t know what to do with them....

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

This sounds awesome. I usually put smoked ham hock in with a pot of collared greens but I'll have to try it with barley. Thanks!

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

The issue with this approach is that it further entrenches gaps that are already there. The best predictor of economic outcome is zip code. That's because schools are funded by local property tax. Live in a wealthier area, get better schools. Better schools lead to a better outcome. Schools in poorer districts stay poorer. It's a system that is self perpetuating.

Replacing affirmative action with something that is strictly income based could help but that ignores other systemic biases that are based on race rather that income.

I feel like if we're ending affirmative action we should also put in place more restrictions on legacy admissions which is just affirmative action for dumb, rich kids and represents a much bigger chunk of students than affirmative action ever did.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Reducing economic disparities will help solving racial inequalities but it won't solve them on its own. In the US there are so many racial disparities baked into the system we'd also need to looking into school funding reform, policing reform, prison reform and zoning reform as well. All of those institutions are built on explicitly racist foundations.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

They just removed affirmative action which hurts underserved minorities. They didn't touch legacy admissions which benefits rich white people. What they're doing is transparently racist. If they wanted a meritocracy why not bar legacy admissions as well?

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Removing legacy admissions would help a lot. I've seen people arguing that admissions are a zero sub game. If someone gets in because of AA then someone else didn't get in. Ending legacy admissions would free up a much larger portion of admissions for a more diverse student body to get in, instead of some rich person's dumbass kid.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

While I'm on the same side as you (and not the person you're responding to), this response is bad and you should feel bad.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

This would be a good point if it weren't for all of the systemic racism that tilts the scales towards white people from before the birth of the country into the present day.

Slavery, Jim Crow, chain gangs, loitering laws, segregation, redlining, political violence, lynching, the war on drugs, the school to prison pipeline, school districts funded by local property taxes, longer criminal sentences for black people, school voucher programs, outlawing the teaching of black history.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

As a white, I think whites should be ground into bread. They should be shot into space as bread where they can expand to fit the container they're placed in while in microgravity. This isn't hypocrisy, it's cosmic baking. Get in the rocket with me, brother.

banning and defederating communities

Hey all, I recently left reddit like many of you. I have a question regarding lemmy and the fediverse on the history of banning and defederation. I have noticed several posts calling for varying communities to be disconnected. were these removal requests as prevalent before the mass migration? Usually I am all for communities...

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

We're not talking about punishing anyone, we just don't want to hear or see their bigotry. They can have their space and we can choose not to interact with them.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

It's definitely not lesser known, but my favorite is The Expanse.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I really liked the last two books. I thought I wouldn't care after the time jump but I was super wrong. I liked the show but I loved the books.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I played Smushi Come Home. It's about a little mushroom making their way home. It's a platformer with some light puzzle elements. Really reminded me of A Short Hike, both in vibes and length. It clocked in at about 3 hrs but was mad cozy.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I've never used quantum stockpiles because I'm lazy. My forts end up sprawling and no amount of planning can keep them from turning into asymmetrical messes.

I've been trying to set up better stockpile management like Tekkud on Twitch does which sometimes works. Mostly my forts just saunter along. I'm going to pretend that is an aesthetic I'm going for.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

My unpopular opinion is that I don't like space operas. I'd rather read pages of explanation of technology and world building. I don't care that the star princess in exile has to assemble a rag tag bunch of fringe worlders to take back the throne from the cruel council of the galactic core. How dat engine work tho?

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Children of Time is a must read. I also like Children of Ruin even though it was dangerously close to a rehash. Children of Memory was good too but really stretched the premise. I liked it in spite of getting very close to space opera with the built up cast.

I'd also recommend Diaspora. It's about post humanism where humans have split into a few factions: fleshers genetically manipulate the human form, gleisners are human consciousness uploaded into robots, and citizens who are uploaded (or generated) consciousness without a physical form.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I definitely agree. I just end up dropping off of series after the second book because I'm off to other worlds. I don't begrudge people who want more of what they like. To each their own.

Also, I'm a hypocrite because I find a lot of Kim Stanley Robinson's stuff too dry because there's not enough character building for me.

Is there a tendency to regard books which make us feel bad as "better" than ones which don't?

I'm dragging myself through an "award-winning" "best-selling" "recommended" book I got from the library and wishing I hadn't. (Yes I know those phrases mean little and I can stop, though I'm nearing the end after hoping it would stop being so hopeless. Yes I can be naively optimistic ;) .) The characters and story are all...

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I definitely agree. Back in school I learned that a Newbury medal in a book meant that a dog and/or parental figure will die. I feel like it's easier to make people feel something when the feeling is bad. Also joyful things are sometimes thought to be lesser or simple.

If anyone is a fan of scifi I recommend checking out Becky Chambers. A Psalm for the Wild Built is an optimistic solar punk book that will warm your heart.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

Hey, let me know what instance you settle on so I can block it. Not trying to start a fight or anything, I believe you should have a voice. I just don't want to hear it.
