ShittyKopper,

Thoughts, prayers, and getting the low hanging fruit down (disabling root login, ssh public keys, updates)

ShittyKopper,

& it turns out it’s already in your inventory

ShittyKopper,

To some people having any moderation beyond “just block the trolls yourself lmao” means creating an echo chamber.

ShittyKopper,

I read Haiku has no future recently and I think a similar thing is happening here.

Do we want to “have a future” or do we just want to be a cool place doing cool shit for ourselves?

ShittyKopper, (edited )

Lemmy the software publishes all (de)federations of an instance at the /instances endpoint

For example, Beehaw’s (de)federations are at beehaw.org/instances
and my own single-user instance has them at lemmy.w.on-t.work/instances (which is slightly different as I run Lemmy 0.18)

If you are looking for the reverse of this, there is a tool that shows that information, but the creators of it are suspicious to say the least (as in, will openly associate with KF kinda suspicious)

COMMUNITY CONTEST: WHAT SHOULD OUR BANNER BE? YOU DECIDE!!!!

196 currently does not have a banner, and that just feels wrong. I have decided that the solution to this is to host a community contest! Link your submissions in the comments as embedded images, and the most upvoted one will become the community banner! Creating original content is encouraged, but not required.

Feel free to re-crop and adjust as required.

trans flag comic sans that says “post before you leave” with fuck tankies in parenthesis underneath

EDIT: This is getting dangerously upvoted so here is the Krita source file for you to fuck around with should you need it: it.w.on-t.work/uJ1i9p.zip

ShittyKopper,

There are so many Linuxy YouTube Guys With Terrible Politics™ that it’s really not that hard to confuse them with each other.

FYI: You all know lemmy.world (instance) is consistently failing to send to other instances, right?

Just in case anyone is using their account here to post to off-instance communities: those posts and comments seem to have a very high failure rate. There is a lot of activity and accounts on this instance. This is to raise awareness, not to pull people away or break up the lemmyverse. Quite the opposite really: there is a...

ShittyKopper,

There’s plenty of 0.17.4 instances that, despite other bugs, have no problem sending and receiving updates from other instances.

It’s probably because of the absolute scale of dot world. This is what happens when you try to centralize ActivityPub, especially an implementation like Lemmy which did not previously have any of the scaling challenges the likes of Mastodon had before.

Everyone should’ve told people to pick different instances (there are STILL new guides written where step 1 is to “just register on dot world” [or shitjustworks, which isn’t any better, really]) and admin should’ve locked registrations after 10-15k, maybe 20k users MAX, yet y’all got too greedy. Good fucking luck dealing with the aftermath.

I should probably go to bed, I’m getting grumpy.

ShittyKopper,

If only ISPs in my country decided to actually give a shit about IPv6 instead of deciding to NAT even harder.

At this point aren’t all that excess processing losing them money? Like, you can still sell IPv4 if that’s how you make a profit but what reason do you have to not just click the “turn on IPv6” button that is probably there if your networking equipment is made in the last century or so???

ShittyKopper,

it’s it even possible to read this in any voice other than dankpods’s

ShittyKopper,

Hbomberguy’s entire channel is a goldmine. It’s hard to pick just one so instead here’s three, in decreasing order of silliness

All of them are about 2 hours long each

Aside from that, Cathode Ray Dude’s recent The Unholy Saga of Phoenix Hyperspace is quite good, though it’s a really computer nerd-y topic.

And finally, if we’re allowing conference talks, literally anything Deviant Ollam has his name attached to tends to be really good, though he does tend to repeat stuff between his talks. Here is four that’s different enough from each other:

ShittyKopper,

“shit just works” (the instance in question) I presume

ShittyKopper,

the modern games equivalent to this is:

how much money the developer gets if you buy it off g2a/other shady cheap games sites: 0$

ShittyKopper,

Video hosting is way more resource intensive (and therefore expensive) than text and even the most image filled of Lemmy communities

ShittyKopper,

Get something new enough and continue getting something new enough when AMD pushes them out. The drivers suck for anything older than an RX580, and things like Blender require even newer GPUs despite the hardware being more than capable.

Run Arch and use the ROCm’d PyTorch from the repos. Those packagers know what they’re doing.

Other than that, expect everything premade to be made for CUDA. There are some tools like github.com/ROCm-Developer-Tools/HIPIFY but they aren’t “there”.

Source: Been running Stable Diffusion on an RX580.

ShittyKopper,

If this comment is federating then I started hosting my first service – Lemmy itself.
