This article really resonated with me. This sentence especially is 100% grim truth:

> I've never seen a completely hands-off system that Just Works at high volume without insane costs.

Monitoring is a Pain

dumb social media idea: circles from google+, but you can perform arbitrary set operations on who can see the post (e.g. developers ∩ londoners)

So a fun thing about gandi.net is that if you transfer your domains out to some other registrar, the instant the transfer is approved you lose your old zone files in their entirety. AFAICT there's no way to tell what your DNS setup was before!

Anyway here's me, an idiot, who lost half of today trying to remember all the various domains and DKIM/SPF/DMARC stuff required to keep the internet infrastructure I run working properly. That's why images were broken today. Sorry folks!

Sinjo,

@aphyr Did they end up hiking domain prices? I've been on the fence since the acquisition, but my renewals all went through early this year.

Sinjo,

@aphyr Sweet 🙃 I'll make sure to get out before the next wave of renewals

what if dig com. A suddenly resolves to an IP

Sinjo,

@ShadowJonathan This briefly happened with the to TLD. Someone put a link shortener there, then got very much told off 🙈

this is the third day this week where it's felt like friday

we're there now right? this one isn't a drill?

@mods Is there any path to mastodon.social not being limited here? Not sure if they got on top of their spam wave, but the limit has made some interactions a bit weird for me.

No sweat if it's still a problem.

Incredible talk from @nld and Brent Bryan on a statistical technique that blows traditional SLO monitoring out the water

By far one of the best talks I've watched in a long time

I like that we all still write READMEs that include gem install foo as if everyone isn't using Bundler 🙈

today's outside cafe conversation: two men discussing "infinitely scalable p2p http nodejs networks" (??) and how women in tech ruin everything

Sinjo,

@theyfemme they should decentralise themselves out of the city and into the forest

found the most hackernews take on the reddit situation

"Just spitballing here but could an employee bring a shareholder lawsuit for negatively impacting financial outlook or destroying brand value?"

Sinjo,

if you want to subject yourself to more of it: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36245633

man, people who treat every conversation as pvp are fuckin exhausting 😩

okay, so you might have noticed that our server sometimes just... blips, does 502 errors, and after 5 or so seconds, it works again

so, just in case you did see that, and wondered if the server crashed; no, the server is not crashing, it is restarting

due to the way mastodon accumulates memory (read: has a memory leak), we have had many database crashes in the last few months, due to the overload of memory that the main mastodon processes (executing ruby code) were pushing against it, those database crashes were actually Bad, with a capital B, and after a lot of looking around (and lowering memory usage of the database), i found out that Mastodon was actually causing it to OOM

Sinjo,

@ShadowJonathan With the caveat that tuning the kernel OOMkiller is a bit of an art, you might be interested in the OOMScoreAdjust setting for the Postgres systemd service

Sinjo,

@ShadowJonathan okay you are way further down this road than I was thinking 😅

@ShadowJonathan I love that he's channeling his "no, actually, fuck you" energy into a good cause

Sinjo, (edited ) to random

why does every fucking hacker news post that has anything to do with a database have a discussion of whether orms are good or not

(this has nothing to do with my article - it was someone else's that had this happen again in the comments)

Sinjo,

@ShadowJonathan huh, it's been so long (like late 00s) since I've seen anyone making a language SDK the main interaction point rather than an API
