Tbh one of the biggest differences I've felt myself with posts "doing numbers" is that on here I'm more happy that I'm able to strike a tone so effectively with a lot of people, whereas on other platforms and the likes, it's more a "reward from the platform"

It's the difference between nailing a vibe, and "winning" a "game"

I think on here the virality of posts is more natural than on other platforms, where it's being shoved inbetween the cracks, and as a result, those "numbers" become ever more artificial

Boost-chains and such feels more like waves of "yes", like a ripple effect (that will eventually die out), occasionally randomly revived when someone goes in and digs them up from my profile

I think, like this, it's fine, I don't feel the need to only make bangers, only occasionally the ones that do become those are absolute random illuminating (or not so illuminating) thoughts, not forced, just... channeled

Idk, I like it here a lot

Sinjo,

@ShadowJonathan something I've noticed here is that there's a big initial wave as a post makes its way round people likely to boost it, which then settles down pretty quickly

if I had to guess, I'd say it's because posts here don't get placed into algorithmic feeds which prolong their popularity

The thing that bugs me about water companies, even more than other (privately owned) utility companies for services such as electricity and internet, is that there's no consumer market for water.

Nobody in the UK chooses their water supplier: it's wholly determined by where you live. So where'e the competition from which consumers are meant to benefit?

Sinjo,

@samthecoy I'd rank them in roughly that order in terms of how real the competition is: water, electric/gas, internet.

With the internet, we've at least seen multiple companies dig up the roads and install their own separate fibre, but the costs are prohibitive outside of densely populated areas.

It is very rude in this, the post Docker Hub Costs Money If You're An Enterprise world, to not publish your container image that is very extensively used in AWS on AWS Public ECR. Now I have to jump through ten fucking hoops to pull it through our corporate Artifactory so I don't get throttled by Docker Hub.

Sinjo,

@dkub Not sure if it would work for you, but we've been using the ECR pull-through cache pretty successfully

Sinjo,

@dkub Ah fair, sad times :(

Docker did a really good job at putting themselves in the middle of everything and then making themselves a pain in the arse

If I didn't know what i was talking about when someone asked a question, I'd simply say nothing rather than... screenshotting nonsense from ChatGPT?!

Sinjo,

@endocrimes it does my head in when people do this in discord servers

like...if I'd wanted that I would have opened the chatgpt website myself??

Sinjo, to random

if I were facing the reposession of my home, I would simply hold my nerve

someone needs to come up with a word for the modern phenomenon of "nothing terrible has come of anything we've done in recent memory so we feel completely immune to any consequences of anything we do from here on out" because by its own mechanism people will not realize we're now in the "finding out" phase of that thinking until they have personally gone past their point of no return, whatever it may be

Sinjo,

@chrisisgr8 it's at least close to normalisation of deviance, which is a heavily studied topic in some circles

Sinjo,

@chrisisgr8 np! you might enjoy dr richard cook's short paper (available as a website here https://how.complexsystems.fail/) - it's a gateway into systems safety for many

there was likely some straight up hubris involved in the design of this vessel though

Sinjo,

@alexiaa heh, I remember signing the other letter and getting emails telling me I'd made a mistake and should remove my name

figured out what was happening with strace and fixed it by deleting those files - who needs pictures anyway?

There's no home for me here.

I didn't want my instance to block Meta. For that, I and others have been called idiots, traitors, sent death threats, labelled Nazis, and been deliberately misgendered.

They know it hurts. They know it's a threat veiled in innocent language. They know, because these threats overwhelmingly come from ostensibly queer-friendly instances.

Sinjo,

@cariad I'll miss your posts in the local feed. If I ever get off my arse about finding an RSS reader that I like, I'll add your blog to it ✨

Moving from one instance to another once you've decided that admin(s) of your current instance don't reflect your values is a feature of the , not a bug. You vote with your presence. That's a good thing!

Sinjo,

@jwildeboer agreed, but I'd love for the feature of not losing my entire post history to also exist

Sinjo, to random

i didn't move to mastodon to spend this much time thinking about the fediverse

i am honestly tempted to go back to twitter

i just want to post 🙃

Sinjo,

i don't want to think about the diplomatic relations between different servers

i don't want to become a spare time sre for a large rails app (i spent 6 years doing that for money so please don't mansplain it to me)

i just want to post 🙃

Sinjo,

going to bed

maybe i'll be less salty about the state of social media when i wake up

Sinjo,

@endocrimes i thought i'd managed to avoid it but it seems i have not

trashheap, to random

Did Meta's activitypub thing go live, or did they drop some new press release or something? I've been getting over an intense cold and have been having a hard time following the chatter.

@trashheap it's all just rumours so far
