Join me in Episode 14 of the Spiritual But Not Religious podcast, where we delve into "Wake Up Call" by Tom Rapsas. Drawing from the wisdom of spiritual luminaries like Thomas Merton, Eckhart Tolle, and the Dalai Lama, Tom invites us to contemplate profound questions about existence, purpose, and the nature of divinity itself.

A Ramana Maharshi quote for this Friday night: “The Self cannot be the object of love; it is itself not different from love. Realize that you are the Self.”

Richard Rohr's contemplation inspired me to write about my own difficulty facing reality as my dog approaches the end of her life. Find my blog post here: https://www.spiritualbnr.org/living-in-reality

Richard Rohr reminds us that the self is a small, petty product of the ego, but the Self is everything. "People with a distorted image of self, world, or God will be largely incapable of experiencing what is Really Real in the world." You can find his meditation here: https://cac.org/daily-meditations/our-limited-perspectives/

My favorite phrase so far from Tom Rapsas' book "Wake Up Call" is "finding the sacred in sandwich-making"—taking the time to pause and appreciate the moments during our busy days that might otherwise go unnoticed. It's so easy to just go through our days on automatic pilot, but by slowing down we can find opportunities for meditation and for connection with others.

I’ve started reading a new book today—“Wake Up Call: Daily insights for the spiritually curious” by Tom Rapsas. Many thanks to the people at Wildhouse Publications for sending me a review copy of the book. I’ll post here as I read, then let you know when the full review is up on my website and podcast.

@Shyji Thank you, Heather! I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for the offer of an interview, but I don't have guests on my podcast—it's a very personal solo endeavor. I'm just sharing as I go to help others know that they are not alone. I encourage you to keep spreading light and love wherever you go.

I was recently inspired by a quote from Robert Wolfe's book "Ramana Maharshi: Teachings of Self-Realization". Ramana is quoted as saying, "Only the absolute Being is real." In Episode 13 of Spiritual But Not Religious, I discuss the meaning of the quote and how it applies to my own life. I hope you find it inspirational.

Check out my new video! My review of "Higher and Friendly Powers" is now available on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/MKWGUm7dQ90. The book was written by Peg O’Connor, a professor of philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. It’s at once a loving homage to William James’s life work and a personal tale of recovery from alcohol addiction. #BookReview #Video #Philosophy #Faith #Addiction #Alcoholism #Spirituality #SpiritualBNR

"The Self, or God, is not somewhere else—but is inside each of us. In loving oneself, one can only love the Self. Love itself is the 'form' of God." ~Ramana Maharshi

I read this in Robert Wolfe's book "Ramana Maharshi: Teachings of Self-Realization". This is a concept I've felt for most of my life. I'm not sure how or when this became clear to me, but it's nice to see it expressed here.

This quote from Lao Tzu's "Tao Te Ching" sums up much of what I have learned so far in my spiritual journey. Realizing that our thoughts and perceptions are a consequence of all that we have experienced in life, that they are malleable and do not define us, is key to letting go of judgment and accepting others as they are. It's also key to accepting the world as it is and ceding the fallacy of control.

@BrooklynZoo Hello and welcome to Mastodon! I'm glad you find my posts interesting. Your angels photo is beautiful and does evoke the words of Ezekiel.

@BrooklynZoo I understand your idea of elders judging right and wrong, but the way I understand things differs a bit. Society deems certain behaviors right and others wrong because certain behaviors are a danger to the people and the ways of their society. The elders I think of—the prophets like Buddha and Jesus—were not there to judge, but to lead. They were teachers, leading people towards inner peace, love, acceptance, and understanding.
