There was a slogan when I was at AT&T of "Our Common Bond", but I didn't know they meant bail bonds…

A song for our times ...

(I first heard this performed live by The Weavers [yes, I am that old] but I think PPM do better job.)

@karlauerbach A party like that sounds like great fun! Were I on the West Coast, I'd ask for invitation!

@karlauerbach No—too much else on.

So I’m trying to decide if my camera saw the aurora—I certainly did not. But here’s one shot where I cranked up saturation and vibrance (whatever that is) and you can see the color bands. The lowest is clearly city lights, but the purple? You can see stars in the area, so it isn’t clouds. The control, I guess, will be going out again in a few nights and taking a similar picture. (15 seconds, f/4, ISO 200).

SteveBellovin,
@SteveBellovin@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@peterainbow It's going to be rainy here tonight. I don't foresee going out at all.

SteveBellovin,
@SteveBellovin@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@jasonp That would be neat, but I'll definitely try for a control shot the next clear night (but not at 4am!) not part of a solar storm.

@dave_aitel Last time I checked (and it's been a while), the C standard actually defined overflow for unsigned as, basically, it's allowed and does the obvious. But overflow in signed arithmetic was explicitly undefined. ~40 years ago, I worked on a machine that set the result of either kind of overflow to zero, which broke things. They wouldn't listen to me, so I asked Dennis Ritchie to tell them how C was defined. That worked…

Very disappointing from Kite Hill just now…

SteveBellovin,
@SteveBellovin@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@Markoff Just tried from Manhattan—no joy. (It was cloudy earlier.) I mean, the camera (with moderately extreme settings) was able to see stars that I couldn't see with my naked eye, but no aurora.

@joebeone Is that real or an artifact? Many news stories about the geomagnetic storm mentioned that GPS navigation could be affected.

Is it true that Republicans don't like "Return of the Jedi" because "Ewok" is an anagram of "woke"?

SteveBellovin,
@SteveBellovin@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@mrgtwentythree Think about it. DeSantis sponsored the "Stop Woke Act", i.e., he wanted to fight the Ewoks. Does this make him Darth DeSantis? An acolyte of the would-be Emperor Trumpletine? (And we now know the real reason for DeSantis' fight with Disney.)

Well, the Brother support web pages kept me from going out and buying a new printer/scanner—their fix worked. They lost out on an immediate sale, but that (plus, of course, the fact that they don't play weird, privacy-invasive games with toner cartridges) has helped confirm that this is the ONLY brand I'll buy.

SteveBellovin,
@SteveBellovin@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@skydog I use a laser printer, not an inkjet—I very rarely need to print in color, and I got tired of the yellow cartridge being empty when I hadn’t printed anything in color.

@SteveBellovin Passed a man near MSG that looked remarkably like you, but no mask. I convinced myself this couldn’t possibly be true and passed another man with a mask on that I decided absolutely couldn’t be you. Clearly I was in dire need of rest and nourishment.

Question for DNS experts. Do you know of a DNS resolver software that can be configured to use a different IPv6 privacy address for each outgoing DNS query?

SteveBellovin,
@SteveBellovin@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@huitema An interesting thought. It would presumably have to do duplicate auto-detect on any address it wanted to use, though.

SteveBellovin,
@SteveBellovin@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@mcr314 @huitema The original design of stateless autoconfig used the site's network (a /64) and the MAC address of the machine, expanded to 64 bits. That meant that the machine could be tracked across networks, etc., by the low-order 64 bits of the IPv6 address. The purpose of the privacy-preserving addresses was to retain the stateless autoconfig feature (and the consequent ease of administration for small sites), but prevent that sort of tracking.

Email from a student: "Can I use bullets in my project?"

Me: worriedly looking through the student's project proposal and wondering if I need to call the cops.

Turned they were asking if they could use bullet lists in a project document.
