@jeff Also that branded instance should be a subdomain instead of a completely new domain. Too many news org are buying new dot social domains when they could just have a subdomain

@ncoca I am under the impression that the MAIN reason for tariffs on China EVs and solar panels and other green tech is to protect US domestic industries.

The thing I dislike most about the Threads algo is how it drops people from my feed for weeks on end. I'll randomly see someone I haven't in a while and get excited to welcome them back, only to realize they've been active this whole time.

This doesn't happen when I catch up on Threads using Phanpy, my Mastodon client, but not everyone has their Fedi switch on so I come here to catch up on those posts. Sad to see I'm still losing out.

Anyway, I hope more people turn on Fediverse Threads 🫶🏼

@quillmatiq When Meta announced Threads, I was hopeful that they would be able to algorithmically sort the whole fediverse and bring the best posts to me. However I am so disappointed with their algorithm that I am happy to go back to honest to goodness Mastodon clients.

Stop using chat rooms (like Discord) as a replacement for tech support forums! Chat rooms and private messaging have a place for synchronous communication, but threads get easily lost, and they’re usually not indexed by search engines.

@gedeonm I will gladly replace all the passwords with passkeys on every throwaway account for sure.

I am not clear how to recover accounts when I lose the passkey.

I hadn't realized how entirely stalled Bluesky's growth is. According to these stats of likes and posts, it was growing until around October 2023, then stopped. Removing invites gave it a brief spike, but then it immediately settled back to its earlier numbers—and stayed there.

I continue to be fascinated by the fact that when Jack Dorsey looks back at his time at Twitter, his only regret is that it was technically possible for him to ban the Nazis so people nagged him to do so.

@carnage4life he is admitting he should not have been in charge. The lesson I draw is that twitter was too big to be properly moderated and federation with small instances is the sustainable way forward.

Coincidentally, this seems to expose a gap in security—since right now there's no way for me to continue posting to a hashtag I use frequently and avoid this user, who openly admits that they use .social to browse hashtags and then quote posts.

The only way I can use a hashtag on this federated network is to make my post publicly visible. Doesn't that make all hashtag-based communities here vulnerable to surveillance and potential abuse?

@tokyo_0 That indeed seems to be a gap. But block should be working on your instance. Why is your instance showing you posts from this user when you have blocked them? That is the gap in my opinion. Even if they at mention you, you should not see them on your timeline.

@tokyo_0 I think you rightly said that it is going to be quite difficult to prevent linking to posts which is what "quote posting" is. Hyperlinks are one of the fundamental building blocks of the web. I really don't have any good ideas but I will say that Gargron - who only builds Mastodon and not the whole fediverse - can't prevent quote posting any more than they can prevents folks linking out to articles.

Btw threads recently said that they will allow their users to block quote posting

@tokyo_0 Facebook used to allow something like that - visibility and comments only for "Friends of Friends". It was my preferred option. It led to the most civil and interesting conversations - it was like being at a dinner party with enough new people but not complete strangers.
