TheBaldness,

No we don’t. We need small instances, each with their own specific topics and communities that DO NOT share your information far and wide, like the fediverse does. I don’t think the fediverse model is the way forward.

TheBaldness,

True, and then there’s the other side of the coin. Federation exposes you to trolls, nazis, and doxxing.

TheBaldness,

You too ha ha oh my god I don’t want to do anything.

TheBaldness,

If I want to watch a version of the original star wars trilogy without a bunch of wibbly wobbly CGI bullshit, do you know how hard that is?

This. A thousand times.

TheBaldness,

There are 2K scans of the original theatrical prints available online. Highly recommended.

TheBaldness,

It’s the original 1977 release. It doesn’t even say “Episode 4” on the opening crawl. Star Wars was originally a stand-alone film, and regardless of what George Lucas says, there were no prequels and sequels. I get so angry when I think about how badly he fucked everything up since then.

TheBaldness,

This sucks big time. Many users of custom mobile phone ROMs are concerned with privacy, and use Mozilla Location Services as an alternative to Google. Not sure what other options are available right now.

Edit: The more I’m reading about this, the more absolutely fucked up it is. There really are no viable alternatives. Mozilla is going to just take all its collected data offline, and that’s that. Given that they accept monetary donations from the public, they should make the information public for download even if they don’t want to host the service anymore. Unbelievable.

TheBaldness,

They should give MLS to the Mozilla Foundation in that case.

Has Discourse been considered as a Lemmy alternative? (discourse.org)

I remember watching this project as it was getting started. It was a replacement to all those PHP forums, like PHPBB & Simple Machines BB. This claimed to have more modern features. It’s also open-source, and you can self-host or pay them for hosting. (I recommend the latter)...

TheBaldness,

Me neither. It didn’t age the way my mind imagined it before I heard it again.

Parts Washer: What solvent are you using?

I’ve got one of those big red 20-gallon parts washers. You know the one. I mostly clean bicyle parts, and most bicycle lubricants are not petroleum-based. They’re usually plant or wax-based. The idea is that a water-based degreaser, like Simple Green, should have no problem cleaning the stuff. My experience is that Simple...

TheBaldness,

It’s one of these:

TheBaldness,

I just checked the pump spec, and it’s only rated for water-based cleaners. So that limits my options.

TheBaldness,

I was looking at that one. They recommend diluting one part Zep with four parts water. So, yeah I figure it’s not flammable.

  • TheBaldness,

I had this album when it came out. We used to make fun of this band a little, but secretly liked them. They were definitely as heavy as everything else at the time. Also, they couldn’t speak much English. There was an interview with the bass player where he just kept saying the same thing over and over again.

    TheBaldness,

US labor can’t really compete with the low cost of Chinese labor. On the other hand, it’s not like US automakers are making small affordable EVs, even though there is a demand for them. Imported Chinese EVs fill that niche and also contain things like strategic metals, rare earth magnets, and lithium battery tech. All of that is recyclable, and they want to sell it to America for super cheap prices. If we were smart, when these cars are done being cars, we’ll reuse and recycle these materials right here in the USA. That could be a growth industry unto itself.

    TheBaldness,

A flitch beam sounds interesting. The problem with 2-by timbers, like 10x2 or 12x2, is their thickness. A 12x2 would drop down 12 inches, and the highest point of my carport is only 8-feet high. In its 16-foot run, it has to drop at least 4 inches in order for water to run off. I can’t be using material as thick as 12x2. That’s why I was considering doubling or tripling some engineered wood. But at that point it seems like steel would be the same cost and better performing. I dunno. Like you said, I may have to talk to an engineer.

    TheBaldness,

That was the original plan. I was going to just extend the existing roof outward, but it would shed rain directly where you have to walk to get to the cars. You’d basically have to walk through a waterfall.

    TheBaldness,

Supposedly a Cisco software update went wrong and took everything down for a while. That’s the rumor.

    TheBaldness,

Yeah. The whole thing is good. I think the one right after this is good too.
