TootSweet,

Yessss! Came here to mention the animutations. Was gratified somebody beat me to it.

Is there something like the pirate bay but for direct downloads?

Im honestly scared to get into pirating but some things are just way too overpriced. i know theres the piract bay and such sites but it requires torrecting and a vpn but i cant afford a vpn so is there like a direct downloads version of the pirete bay or a safer alternative? im looking to get a few peices of media by the way....

TootSweet,

Closest thing I've found was /r/OpenDirectories on the site that shall not be named. Which is to say, no there's not really any such thing as "Pirate Bay but for direct downloads." At least not that I've found.

Pirate Bay but for direct downloads does seem like something that might be able to thrive on the dark web, though, doesn't it? I wonder why something like that hasn't become a thing and gotten big.

I suppose some site that just acts like a searchable directory of links to IPFS could be used in combination with IPFS web adapter sites. But I haven't found anything like that.

TootSweet,

Pros:

Cons: We're federating with Threads.

TootSweet,

No no no. That's not how dogs would wear pants at all!

So... are Lemmy users also generally crypto supporters?

Just got very lightly flamed by another user for making fun of crypto and was told that Lemmy and crypto have “the exact same advantages and disadvantages”. Now I disagree heavily there, since even if it shares some principles I’d argue that the scale of the problems change when you’re talking about a global finance...

TootSweet,

I've run into a couple of cryptobros on Lemmy, but not many.

TootSweet,

My understanding is that they're switching to a paid model. As in, you'll have to pay to continue using it, but if you do start paying, it'll work indefinitely. (Or at least until the makers of Infinity make the determination that even having users pay won't be enough to keep Infinity financially sustainable.)

Given that that's Infinity's plan, the theory is that probably the makers of Infinity have gone to Reddit and negotiated an extension of the non-paid API plan long enough for Infinity to implement a way for users to pay for it. I don't think there's any official word exactly how long that extension will be, but the expectation is that it will run out at some point and when it does, you'll have to pay to keep using Infinity.

One thing I'm not sure about, though, is how exactly that'll work given that Infinity is open source. Surely there's a "shared secret" or something involved. And for that kind of authentication method to work, the secret has to stay... well... secret. So they wouldn't be able to just commit that secret to the Github repo. Maybe it'll be some kind of OAuth2 scheme or something where Infinity-owned servers and Reddit servers will communicate behind the scenes to get you logged in.

TootSweet,

Why are there no comments/answers in the whole OOTL community? I need to know the secret of the beans too!

TootSweet,

I believe they're talking about a control stick. At least that's what I'm familiar with.

TootSweet,

Lately, when I'm looking for answers and my googling gives me a Reddit link, I pull up the actual reddit page in The Wayback Machine. Admittedly my sample size is small but it hasn't failed me yet.

Some day, though, if Reddit goes down completely or otherwise becomes unavailable to search engines, it will be much harder to find Reddit content by Googling for it.

The other thing I think is a hidden gem of useful info on Reddit is the wikis. It seemed that even sites like Libreddit (when it worked) didn't provide access to those.

There is The Archive Team. They still seem to be actively archiving Reddit (probably via web scraping, not any particular API.) I'm not sure if/how the results of Archive Team scrapes are made available to others, though.

Should political extremism, far-left or far-right, be an allowed part of Lemmy's Fediverse?

I’m simply asking this question because of Lemmygrad.ml existing, and that there isn’t a far-right equivalent of it yet. If Lemmygrad has any standing for its right to exist under free speech, where is the line drawn for other extremist political ideologies? If Holodomor skepticism is allowed, then what stops Holocaust...

TootSweet,

Can't agree more. It's amazing just how many posts I've seen since joining Lemmy equating the left and right, as if "workers should own the means of production" is just as bad as the literal genocide advocated by the hard right.

That said, given that lemmy.ml (and maybe latte.isnot.coffee?) is run by pro-CCP tankies, I think it's worth taking a second to say that defending the genocide of the Uighurs is majorly fucked and the vast majority of hard leftists here on Lemmy vehimently oppose that.

But one can't be hard-right and not be for genocide, basically. Not so on the left.

TootSweet,

6e is just going to be a video game. And a buggy one at that.

To explin my thought process a bit here, there are rumors that their recent OneDND rules changes are designed to make it easier to implement an "DND Beyond AI Dungeon Master(tm)" which they'd make part of their DND Beyond virtual tabletop. Also, because they seemed really possessive of the rights to animate DND spells, it sounds like they may be intending to make DND Beyond VTT the only immersive VTT experience in town.

Which (again if rumors are true) makes it feel like they might be trying to make the next edition more MMORPG-ish and less TTRPG-ish. Or at least trying to straddle the line between those.

Plus, I don't think LLM's are up to the task of DM'ing yet. So if they go that direction, I expect some really weird interactions with "DND Beyond AI Dungeon Master(tm)." Which is why I say it'll be "buggy."

I also expect if these are their plans, they're way to far in and the big wigs' egos are far too committed to back out now.

But also, given the Hasbro big wigs' track record of making terrible decisions lately, I wouldn't put rushing a buggy video game out past them.

TootSweet,

Is the aim to make this happen for all elections in which Missourians vote, or just for elections of state and local offices or what?

Also, are there other states that have done this? It looks like Fargo and St. Louis do approval voting (or at least a variation of it) but if this happened it would make Missouri the first state to do this, yes? (Though, it looks like Maine and Alaska use some form of ranked choice voting.)

This all looks great whatever the case. It would be awesome to see this happen.

TootSweet,

Actually, the topic of the thread is pretty relevant as well.

TootSweet,

Yeah, there were so many snarky comments I could have made and something about El Salvadore was high on the list of candidates.

TootSweet,

Given the lows to which Reddit has stooped lately, I wouldn't be surprised to see Reddit respond to that by filing a lawsuit against the mod seeking nine figures in damages.

Which makes me hope even more somebody does it.

TootSweet,

Tears of the Kingdom as I have been every day since it came out and as I likely will every day until I've one hundred percented it.

TootSweet,

I don't understand all the poop references on Lemmy.

And at this point I'm too afraid to ask.

TootSweet, (edited )

That's probably more of a Lemmy feature request than a Jerboa feature request.

Edit: TIL if I've left a Lemmy page open in my browser, I should refresh a page before replying to make sure I'm not restating posts that beat me to it that I haven't seen.

TootSweet,

Reddit's wikis are a hidden goldmine of really reliable, easy to understand info not tainted by promotions or corporate interest or plain old misinformation. Posts too, really. That video about Reddit that went viral just before Reddit pulled the API pricing bullshit (the one about the guy searching for the best maple syrup) had a lot of truth in it.

As for worst experience, I really think all I can come up with is the recent API pricing situation and subsequent vitriol from spez.

TootSweet,

There ar enough legal gray areas still that it would take a lot of work to even figure out what "all digital piracy" even means. For instance, I don't think it's been tested in court yet whether the copying into RAM that your OS does when you run a program runs afoul of copyright.

Though, corporations routinely violate the terms of the GPL by distributing binaries without providing any way to get the source code. I'd say that qualifies as "digital piracy." So I suppose if the government did try to stop all digital piracy, it wouldn't be all bad.

‘Linux’ Foundation increases number of Microsoft employees in the board of directors to THREE, the only geek in the board has left (or got removed) (techrights.org)

Summary: The Linux Foundation is gradually becoming a shadow of Microsoft, just like the Open Source Initiative, where most of the money comes from Microsoft and the official blog promotes Microsoft, its proprietary software, and Microsoft’s side in a class action lawsuit over GPL violations (with 9 billion dollars in damages...
