i have invented a new toki pona opinion: if you want to subtly depersonify yourself, then constructions like "mi li ijo meli" should be acceptable.

falsehoods programmers believe about addresses:

  • The only characters in a street name are letters and perhaps a space.
  • The only characters in an address line are letters, numbers and perhaps a space.
  • The street name that Google Maps uses is the only correct way to spell the street name.
  • These previous points are not contradictory.
Vierkantor,
@Vierkantor@mastodon.vierkantor.com avatar

oh, got another one!

  • It is safe to transform the street name by removing the type of street. (e.g. "Main Street" → "Main"; "Avenida 5 de Mayo" → "5 de Mayo")

Falsehoods programmers believe about forms:

  • if you decide a form input is invalid, you should move the cursor to the end of the contents because that's where the error must be!

being able to read non-Latin scripts is useful but it's also just a very cool feeling to me. especially the ones i'm not so familiar with give me interesting puzzles to figure out :3

Vierkantor,

i should learn to read Arabic next i think!

writing systems and friends in vague order of how comfortable i am with them:

no problem at all:

  • Latin
  • Greek
  • my own alphabet
  • Cyrillic

give me a bit of time and i can get there:

  • Latin encoded as ASCII
  • Hebrew
  • Braille
  • sitelen pona

i can definitely recognize words (as long as they happen to use the characters i know):

  • Georgian
  • Kana
  • Morse

oh i know at least three characters in this text, no idea what they mean tho:

  • Chinese characters (at this level i'm not going to distinguish between CJK)
  • Cherokee
  • Armenian
  • Hangeul

sorry, no clue:

  • Devanagari
  • Arabic
  • etc.

  • "beter" means "better" in Dutch and "worse" in Turkish
  • English "much" and Spanish "mucho" mean the same thing and are completely unrelated
  • "presunto" is Portugese for "ham" and Spanish for "alleged", so certain bilingually labled foods taste like ham, allegedly
  • 山 (yama) is Japanese for “mountain” and я́ма (yama) is Ukranian/Russian/Bulgarian/Belarusian for 'hole in the ground"
  • German "haben" and Latin "habere" mean the same thing and are completely unrelated
