"I didn’t join Mastodon until after we launched 404 Media. I joined, frankly, because lots of people told me that we should. Mastodon had been decried by many (me, previously), as a social media platform that is too complicated or weird to sign up for. I love Passkeys, and also believe that Passkeys will, eventually, eliminate my need for 1Password (which I like — but would like to not need!). macOS/iOS Passkeys automatically sync to all my devices, they’re not a text string, they just work.

So, imagine my surprise when I just went to create a Passkey for Nintendo, and found that 1Password blocked and hijacked the system Passkey prompt… in favor of their own.

Just a convenience? Or artificial lock-in to protect 1Password’s future? Hmm

@cabel ironically, I was trying to use the new 1Password system for my new Nintendo passkey and it seemed like iCloud Keychain was blocking it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@cabel I assume there is a setting, but at the least, the button that looks like a usb key in the 1Password pop up should pass the key along to OS.

@cabel yeah I only knew because I did research yesterday on the 1P site trying to get things to work. In retrospect, I can see they designed for the use case “someone has a hardware token” instead of “a competing passkeys implementation”.

@marcoarment @atpfm Yeah. I put it next to the Hermes orange leather, which turns out not to look like the same orange.

I went through a very similar process as you buying unsatisfying orange bands before finally just buying the Hermes sport band. But I did it a more expensive way…

Threads is the most fun, most interesting new product of the year, and no one in the E.U. can use it, or will be able to use it anytime soon, because their own elected officials passed a law that effectively bans it.
