Kubrick foresaw high-resolution retina displays in 1968. (To create the effect, they rear-projected high-resolution slides.)

Pointless NYT Report Says Apple Plans to Improve Siri

@osullivan Exactly. It's like they're describing Bizarro Apple, not Apple.

The NYTimes coverage of the Trump trial is killing me because whatever tools they are using in the field leave some quotes and apostrophes straight, and makes others curly. Why are they doing this to me? https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/05/10/nyregion/trump-trial-hush-money

Screenshot of coverage with curly quotes but a straight apostrophe

@kjhealy @hotdogsladies @ironicsans But the NYT, like me, doesn't allow subjects to define how their names are cased. The Times goes with Mac Mini, not mini. And surely they would not go with BEN PROTESS just because he styles it that way himself.

Great Moments in Sorting.

I was this many years old when I realized why iMovie was never showing up in the "Recent Items" list. I'd expect this from Android, but come on...

@jwz Especially considering how adamant Apple has remained about a case insensitive file system.

@gruber I think it’s good that Apple has apologised for the Crush ad; it would be even better to hear about the choices that lead to - eg the piano - being crushed.

Were those new things, or recycled/recovered things?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@dcrooks Does it matter, really?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@dcrooks By that logic every single practical stunt in movie and TV history has been immoral. It's fine to break things for fun once in a while. There is no piano-less school because Apple (might have) smashed one.

("Might have" = who knows what was CGI in that spot?)

patrickrhone, to random
@patrickrhone@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Apple's apology about the Crush Ad was great and welcome... But they should do the same for the (still not seemingly resolved) Apple ID logout/lockout issue affecting hundreds of thousands (millions?). Not a peep on that.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@patrickrhone You're saying people should be more concerned with serious security issues pertaining to their entire digital lives than with a lighthearted commercial?

@jeff_tyrrill Great catch. Fixed this one, and also went back and fixed three previous “GameBoy” occurrences in older articles. And added an entry to my style guide:

Can someone at #Microsoft be kind enough to remind us again of the reason why, in #macOS, when you quit and relaunch #Word, it refuses to remember which documents were opened and to reopen them automatically, even though the “Close windows when quitting an application” option is NOT enabled in System Settings?

Apple’s ‘Crush’ Ad for the New iPad Pros Is, Well, Getting Crushed

@danblondell That too, but I think people are bothered more by the notion of destruction/replacement than any sort of wastefulness.

The “can you do work on an iPad” debate is so simple.

Some folks can and others can’t. Some people want to push the iPad harder than others, while some folks want to use what they’re familiar with.

I promise we can all just use the computer we want and be okay.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@ismh It's like “Can you commute to school or work on a bicycle?”, but somehow the people who prefer or need a car want to argue that no one can be happy commuting on a bike.

@davemark @gruber Is it true that Tim Cook wanted the combination of the new iPads and new Magic Keyboards to also have a switchable MacBook OS, starting with the specs of the first MacBook, but that the shareholders were against this?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@david1280 @davemark Tim Cook doesn't seem to make decisions like that; even if he did it would never leak; and shareholders aren't polled for input on anything.

prolost, to random

The thing I want most to know from folks handling the new iPads is, how’s the nano-texture screen? Black levels, touch, Pencil feel.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@prolost @5tu I didn’t get a lot of time with it but I loved the way it looked. Didn’t get to use Pencil with it, alas. One oddity: only the display has the texture — the bezel is glossy.

It has been a good day for Esc key fans.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@agiletortoise I can see the argument for repurposing Caps Lock's prime real estate for a more-useful key, but I also sort of think the train left the station on that one about 20 years ago. People expect Caps Lock?

But Esc belongs “top left”.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@EricLawrence No, you can't remap keys like that on iOS. But do you really want dedicated keys for that?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Cmarriotti @markv Yeah I took it solely as a comment on the aluminum palm rest feel and larger Mac-style glass trackpad.

@dougmcarthur@mastodon.social avatar

Hey @gruber here’s a word choice question for ya. In the iPad Air announcement they described interacting with something on screen as “a click”, and for iPad Pro they said “a tap”. Are they interchangeable or was this intentional?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@onlytruejustin @dougmcarthur I'd say that counts as a mistake. Perhaps originally they used a clip where the button was activated using the trackpad cursor, and changed it to touch, and let the narration stand? Most likely though just a mistake.

@gruber A little detail about Apple Vision Pro sales: if sales are so bad, why hasn’t Apple made any move, zero, zilch, to release the thing outside the US. That’s the first thing to do if the device doesn’t sell.

Yet it remains US only.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@pl Good question! I don't know. Maybe regulatory stuff? Maybe VisionOS wasn't yet localized in all languages?

Apple Watch Ultra’s Best Feature: Battery Life
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/05/06/apple-watch-ultra

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@schmidt I've got cellular on my Series 7, and despite battery health being down to something like 85 percent, battery life is still pretty good. "All day" starting with a full charge, easy. So: way longer than AI Pin.

(Seems like the laser projector is very power hungry.)

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@schmidt Yeah, the truth is, I almost never actually use my Series 7 on cellular. I pay Verizon for the service "just in case", not because I actually use it. Actually using it daily surely draws noticeable power.
