lemmy is the more mature platform, whilst kbin is newer and more feature rich.
What it amounts to is that kbin can do things that lemmy can't do, but the things that they both do, lemmy tends to do better. And as kbin is effectively in alpha at the moment, it doesn't have much documentation, making installation and configuration a challenge.
The biggest point of difference in features is that kbin is aware of other fediverse content in a way lemmy isn't. kbin and lemmy both talk to each other really well, but kbin also natively supports other types of fediverse groups (gup.pe, friendica and chirp). kbin also lets you see non threadiverse content, by attaching hashtags to groups. So if you set up say a cycling group on kbin, you can also make the group watch the #cycling tag, any any mastodon or other micoblogging content will appear on a special tab in your cycling group.
When browsing through my feed, especially if I have "all" selected, posts that are usually a few minutes old start appearing at the top of my feed after everything has loaded. This makes things difficult to read as it scrolls down the page. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't know if this is a Lemmy issue or a...
It's a lemmy issue. That being said, we're not on the latest version of lemmy yet as @supakaity does all of the upgrades, and she's juggling a few things at the moment.
We've got a kbin instance coming, but as a platform, it's more alpha than beta, so there are speedbumps. It's coming though :)
When it comes to defederation, it's pretty simple. Blahaj is a community for queer and gender diverse folk. Protecting that community and other marginalised users from hate is the main priority of my moderation decisions.
If the admins of any instance (including the devs instances) let hate and bigotry spread and start hurting members of the Blahaj community, then that instance will be blocked. Other than that, I'm unlikely to defederate whole instances.
Two of them were hate instances that died long before the threadiverse migration occurred.
The last one (exploding heads) is a right wing, trump worshipping bitcoin bro instance that was also defederated many months before the threadiverse migration occurred.
Going forward, basically, anything that gets defederated will almost universally have the following reason
"This instance was blocked as it was an ongoing source of transphobia and/or other bigotry"
I am currently prototyping (and I do mean prototyping, the code is a MESS) an automoderator-like bot. Can I host it here or should I look for another instance?
I cant seem to open feddit.nl through this instance, a community i wanted to subscribe to. I cant seem to find a link to that community in the communities tab when searching for all, and when typing it in the browser i get a 404. Does every instance have to manually link every instance or something? Or am i using it wrong?
Notably, it can take a minute or two sometimes. It's a bit of a process to get groups federating the first time. I'm hoping that improving group discovery is prioritised by the devs some time soon
This is the growth of our lemmy instance, without any advertising or spruiking. It was spun up as a test more than anything else, but it seems that it has become more than that!...
At the moment there isn't much to do. We're ok absorbing the costs of our instances for now. We run a pretty heavily customised fork of Calckey on blahaj.zone, but our lemmy instance is almost (but not quite) straight out of the box.
Keep on chatting, and keep the community vibrant sounds like a non answer, but still, do that :)

I just want to say that the admins here are great and deserve appreciation, especially during this whole kerfuffle with Reddit :)...

Defederated/Blocked Instances Mega Thread
Hi guys,...
Are (hopefully helpful) bots allowed?
I am currently prototyping (and I do mean prototyping, the code is a MESS) an automoderator-like bot. Can I host it here or should I look for another instance?
IMPORTANT:this community is changing names!
The other 196 seems to be regarded as the "real" 196, so this community is now 195!
Is there a plan for a dark mode
For those of us who don't necessairly like to browse during the brighter areas, is there a plan for a dark mode or themes for this instance?
