So use Mastodon. Problem solved. Twitter is toxic. You canā€™t fix Twitter without fixing the whole culture.

Getting rid of Elon (in some hypothetical universe where you could do that) & restoring the siteā€™s design back to what it used to be isnā€™t going to change the toxic culture. Twitter only selectively enforces their own rules and itā€™s been that way since Jack Dorsey was in charge.

(Hereā€™s an example: I can think of a few tweets where people are ganging up on someone and those are still there to this day. Their rules are very clearly ā€˜no harassment and no dogpilingā€™ and theyā€™ve always been that way. Do you think they give a damn to enforce their own rules? Only when Elonā€™s right-wing buddies are being attacked, then they bother.)

Restoring the siteā€™s design back to what it used to be isnā€™t going to magically fix the toxic culture (people sniping, dogpiling, attacking others etc). Better if we just set the whole thing on fire and start from scratch, build something new - oh wait, we have that. Itā€™s called Mastodon. The learning curve isnā€™t that bad. But that would be learning something new. That would be actively doing something other than complaining.

Why would you want to back to a place where a billionaire or a corporation collects all your personal data? If you like that sort of thing, go to Threads, Bluesky, Post, etc. Nobodyā€™s stopping you.

"All" feed not updating very quickly

Iā€™m kind of new to lemmmy and I could find the answer anywhere but it seems my geddit.social all feed is old. It stays with posts ab 2-4 days old. At one point the top post was like 2 weeks old. While Lemmy.worlds all feed is updating way faster. Why is this? If I want faster feed should I switch? Thanks

alex,

Or - now this is a shot in the dark - we get stuxā€™s attention and he responds before we tell other users to move instances. You know, just a thought, since heā€™s the guy who deals with site issues, talking to the person who can do something about it is usually a good idea.

alex,

We really donā€™t bite here. šŸ±

The Klingon boy band made the final cut, thankfully. However, they shot two versions of the Klingons, led by Bruce Horak as the Klingon captain. The second was opera. Ultimately, the opera take felt too close to the other singing. Luckily, the Klingon boy band won.

geddit isnā€™t a client, itā€™s an instance/server of Lemmy (which has its own API). To say Lemmy doesnā€™t have an API is false. It very much does. (In order for there to be apps for Lemmy, it would logically follow that thereā€™s an API for them to use.)

I am not a fan of a reddit relay (at least, not on here). We should be building a new community here rather than amplifying posts from the other place. Of course, you are free to set up your own instance that does this but I wonā€™t be supporting that here.

Iā€™d like to know how youā€™d propose to set up something like that, considering reddit API access is unreasonably expensive (which prompted the exodus away from reddit in the first place). Because you need a way to talk to reddit too. Thatā€™s what APIs do (ā€œapplication programming interfaceā€ - itā€™s in the name). In my understanding, you canā€™t just code something like that without a) accessing redditā€™s API to read posts and b) accessing lemmyā€™s API to write them. Feel free to correct me if Iā€™m wrong, though. Theyā€™re not going to let you scrape their data for free.

But if you have a secret gold mine stashed away somewhere that you can afford this, why not contribute to the continuing development of lemmy or this instance instead of spending it on redditā€™s API access? You know, itā€™s just a thought.

I repeat: geddit.social (this instance) is not a client. Nor is this community about that. You are confused between two different things called ā€œgedditā€, neither of which are alike. We have nothing to do with them.

This website - geddit.social - has nothing to do with the other - unfortunately named - reddit client for Android, nor are we affiliated with reddit in any way, nor do we code anything that accesses reddit. I promise, we arenā€™t lying to you. You are confusing two different things based on a similar name. You can go ahead and argue the point with me but your suggestions are not going to reach their intended audience & youā€™ll be wasting your time.

Hereā€™s the difference:

  • That app, also named geddit, has a github page, which youā€™ve mentioned. Did you look at their about section? Itā€™s on the right side of the page. Humour me and go look. Did you notice the website that is listed there? You might want to open it and checkā€¦because this isnā€™t it. The two couldnā€™t be more different visually. This website has dark mode on default. That website has a blindingly white background. The difference is extremely striking.
  • This website (geddit.social) is a Lemmy instance owned by stux (you may have heard of the cat who runs mstdn.social, masto.ai, mastodon.coffee, among other fun services), which is an open-source alternative to reddit, linked to other services such as Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc in something called the Fediverse, which you appear to be familiar with since youā€™re posting from another Lemmy instance (lemmy.sdf.org). In fact, if you actually go to our website, geddit.social (humour me and go there, Iā€™ll wait), there are links at the bottom of every page that explain this is a Lemmy instance, just like the one you are using to post here.

Once again, that app and this website (geddit.social) are completely different entities (one accesses reddit, the other does not) and only share a similar name. We arenā€™t an app or a client, let alone do we have anything to do with reddit. This is a website. Not an app. People use Lemmy apps to access this instance. Lemmy is a Fediverse server software that other apps access. I couldnā€™t make the distinction any clearer. The name for this instance was chosen when we had no idea anything similarly named existed. It is just an unfortunate coincidence.

You are posting in !geddit - which is a community (on the geddit.social instance) about the instance itself (where we post news all our users should know). Nothing to do with anything that may or may not share a similar name. This is a completely different entity.

Once again, no, this website is NOT a client for reddit. In any conceivable sense. Nor do we have such a thing here.

Itā€™s a known bug with lemmy. Regardless of the message, theyā€™re already subscribed. Just gotta wait it out and it will go away on its own.

alex,

In other words, theyā€™re literally going to grease the wheels.

alex,

Just to clear something up, CalcKey is now known as Firefish(.social) and thatā€™s run by a completely different person.

alex,

.world is a firefish instance. not the main firefish instance (which is .social).

so when I said, ā€œitā€™s not the same person running itā€ - the flagship instance, if you will, is .social. many of the main people coding it are on .social (afaik). .world is just another instance.

that was i meant, if i need to clarify : the main main people coding-wise are not the same. the flagship instance (which is not .world) is not run by the same people as the mastodon flagship instance.

ā€œthe flagship instanceā€ (if you will) of Mastodon is mastodon.social. not run by the same people who run firefish.social. they are not the same thing, run by the same people.

thatā€™s what I was getting at. i guess I only make sense to myself.

alex,

Confirmed at SDCC.

alex,

Did you know there are apps for that? (ie. Kaiteki)

If you didnā€™t, you might want to try them. They work just fine, at least the one Iā€™ve tried.

alex,

There are never enough.

alex,

Yeah, there are some really cool things you canā€™t do on Mastodon, such as Misskey-formatted-markup.

For example: look at those kitties go!
