  • alex,

It's easy to tell this is a copy/paste job (due to the repeated text from the subject pasted into the body) so I have to wonder if this is a bot.

At the risk of repeating myself:

It’s easy to tell this is a copy/paste job (due to the repeated text from the subject pasted into the body) so I have to wonder if this is a bot.

Apparently, I wasn't clear enough when I said this, so my apologies, I will be clearer: it was the copy/paste (of the same wording) into the subject and body that had me wondering (because it is typical for bots to do this).

At no point whatsoever did I say or imply that I had a problem with your viewpoint and I do not appreciate you putting words in my mouth. If that's how you interpreted the above, that's not my issue - that is on you for misinterpreting my words.

I wasn't in any way challenging you, disagreeing with you or trying to silence you (so the defensiveness is uncalled for) but if I had, I would have been crystal clear that was my intent. Don't try to read between the lines and infer meaning that isn't there because you'll be wrong. You don't know me. If you aren't sure what someone said, there's this wonderful thing called "asking for clarification" and it doesn't cost you anything. it only takes a little extra effort. There's this well-known adage about assuming..I'm sure we both know how it goes.

Again, to be absolutely, positively 100% crystal clear: I wasn't talking about your words, I was talking about the way you typed them and nothing more. Again, copy/paste copy/paste screams "bot" to me and I'm sure others as well. If you had used a more sensible subject line, I wouldn't be asking if you're a human.

Nonetheless, thank you for confirming you are a real person. I appreciate the response but I could've done without the defensiveness. (As I am autistic, it took entirely too many 'spoons' to formulate a proper response.)

The general consensus is that this was going to be a monetary offer to allow Instagram to further colonize the Fediverse by purchasing one of the larger servers.

Wrong. Stop fearmongering. There was no such offer. At least do your research and get your facts straight before you make claims you can't back up.

There is no confirmation of any financial contracts, or moderation arrangements and Eugen Rochko/Gargron has stated he doesn't know anything about any secret deals.[1]

    From @supernovae:

The nda wasn’t because of some absurd agreement but just the fact they’re launching a new project and we’re getting access to engineers and product team to discuss what the relationship could be. And they went well.[2]

There was a call to talk about engineering, moderation, safety, support for user privacy controls and how federation would look like. (and more)

There was no deal signing or any bullshit like that - that’s all fake news.

The nda is because none of this stuff is released and it’s up to meta to share details or admins to join the ongoing calls to learn in advance of launch what is going on.[3]

We don’t know, what we don’t know. So i initiated contact and meta obliged. Because the product isn’t released yet, there is an NDA.[4]

    From stux@mstdn.social:

i did not attend the meeting, did not sign a NDA and i do not get 'financial support' from Meta or any related company.

I put quite some work in to pay for it all. [5]

    alex, (edited )

This is all ridiculous semantic arguments. Yes, you did say there was a deal. Now you're trying to walk it back.

The general consensus is that this was going to be a monetary offer to allow Instagram to further colonize the Fediverse by purchasing one of the larger servers.

Firstly, the last time I checked, "a monetary offer" is what person might otherwise call a deal. If you propose to give me money for something, that is a deal. And as I stated multiple times with proof, no such deal was made. You really don't like being wrong, do you?

Instagram and Facebook are owned by Meta. Meta is the controlling entity (Meta owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, among other things). Whatever you choose to call it, Instagram or Meta, it is the same company. Potato, po-tah-to. They are in essence the same thing. But let's be factual: It was Meta, not Instagram who approached those admins and again your information is wrong. this article specifically says Meta, so this does this, and this, and this too

What you "heard" was rumours and fear-mongering. You have not offered one single solitary shred of proof. I have offered several to the contrary.

    alex, (edited )

Lol. "I have no interest in your response, I will not be responding" is like shoving your fingers in your ears and yelling "La la la, I can't hear you". Getting the last word is what children do.

Btw none of this "evidence" is evidence of anything (I already confirmed there was a meeting with an NDA, thank you for that). IMO, the Medium link is trash because it's an opinion (anyone can write on Medium, how is this proof of anything?) and how is that cartoon evidence of anything? Well done, a person knows how to draw. Gold star to them but how does a cartoon actually prove anything? So basically, your supporting evidence (the links you paste multiple times to support your argument) is trash. Come up with something better.

So you're blindly believing rumour and gossip. You linked to blogs and opinions and call them sources and "evidence" but what are they evidence of? I linked to actual news articles and quotes from Fediverse admins (you know, actual sources) and corrected you that it was Meta and not Instagram (come on, even your own links say "Meta"). You can provide all the links you want to every editorial/opinion piece in existence but that still is not proof of anything. Opinions are not facts. Anyone can scream "oh noes, the sky is falling" - that does not actually prove the sky is falling (if, for example, I believe the world is flat, I go out and find websites that say the world is flat, and I go, "see see, they agree with me, it has to be true!", that still doesn't make it true, this is a logical fallacy called argumentum ad populum). Talk to people who were there. That would be what we call "facts" and actual journalism. Opinions, speculation and rants are not evidence of anything either. I went and got the facts, you got all offended and snippy when I corrected you & you're stubbornly sticking to your guns. How is that an example of "inviting corrections"? Was that part a lie or is it that the only corrections you'll accept are the ones that suit your narrative? That wouldn't be "inviting corrections" (since you don't seem all that accepting when people correct you), it would be "inviting corrections selectively". So it looks like you're wrong yet again.

Anyway, there is not much point in continuing this lovely conversation so I think we're done here. Have yourself a lovely day.

(Personally, I don't understand the hostility or drama and I really don't appreciate it. If you interpreted my words as some great offense, that is on you. This is not reddit or Twitter and the absolute last thing we should be doing is bringing that adversarial sort of culture here - we should be building something new. The onus is on all of us to stop spreading misinformation and rumour. Gossip and opinion do not qualify as reliable sources.)

    alex, (edited )

Let's stick to the facts here and not opinions, gossip or rumour. The timeline of events is right here. (and I hope a friendly mod comes along and pins this)

    • Between June 12th and June 15th: Meta employees have been meeting with admins of large Mastodon servers, including at least Eugen Rochko (Mastodon CEO, admin of mastodon.social and mastodon.online) and Byron Miller (admin of universeodon.com). This meeting was under NDA, and seems to have mainly centered around discussing the app P92.
    • June 15th: information about the meeting, and the signing of an NDA, starts to spread around the feeds.
    • June 18th: @vantablack starts the fedipact, a place where admins can sign that indicate that their server will not federate with Meta’s servers.
    • June 23rd: @kev, admin of fosstodon.org shows an email where admins of Mastodon servers get invited to a roundtable meeting with Meta, as well as his response declining the meeting.
    • June 23rd: Alex Heath reports for The Verge on the issue. He reports that “Meta plans to introduce this phase [ActivityPub support] about three months after the initial release.”
    • June 27th: An off-the-record roundtable meeting between Meta and Mastodon server admins is planned.

Note that there is zero mention of "a deal", "an exchange", "a transaction" (pick your preferred terminology) or "gifts" as alluded to in the Medium link (which IMO is trash - anyone can write an article on Medium and scream 'doom and gloom', should we really accept that as valid journalism?) and alluded to by the OP. That simply did not happen and that is fake news.

    alex, (edited )

He disregarded the protests as "noise". Of course he doesn't give a damn.

Let them die then. There's a point (that she's completely missing) about decentralization and not being beholden to billionaires to make the right decisions (of course they won't - they care about one thing and it's not us).

    alex, (edited )

Huffman’s response to almost every question asked by Jay Peters reeks of spite. Every response has a passive (or not) aggressive undertone. The responses are laced with defensiveness. It’s the behavior of a petulant child. Huffman is trying to imply that third-party apps took advantage of Reddit to build successful businesses on the back of its API, but that’s simply not true. https://9to5mac.com/2023/06/15/reddit-blackout-third-party-apps/

Throughout the interview, Huffman repeatedly says that Reddit is “willing to work with the apps that are willing to work with us.” But that offer only seems to apply if you agree to the imminent deadline, agree to the as-proposed API pricing, and agree to not ask for any changes or further clarification.

Okay then. I guess by your logic, these are the actions of a person who cares about his users. By making the API access so economically unfeasible, it prices out the majority of developers (not saying it should be free, either but let's be reasonable).

If you're so convinced he wants to do good by the users (he doesn't) and nothing can change your mind, why are you here? Nothing we say is going to convince you and nothing you say is going to convince us. Not by any means trying to silence you, you have a right to your opinion but really, why are you here? I can produce article after article, quote after quote and none of it is going to change your position. What are you hoping to achieve?

Thinking about leaving lemmy.world for a more free-speech focused instance. Does anyone have any ideas?

Seeing a thread get locked just for asking if it's okay to disagree with trans people's identities really rubbed me the wrong way. I don't want moderators pushing their agenda on to me. If I see something I don't like, I can block that user or community. It'd be nice to block entire instances, but I don't think we have that...

    alex,

No, it isn't okay to disagree with anyone's identity and it's not an "agenda" or an "ideology".

You do have the right to free speech but guess what? I also have the right to free speech. (Can't have it both ways)

I have the right to tell you you're wrong. You have the right to disagree, but you're still wrong. People have the right to be their authentic selves. If that rubs you the wrong way, please leave the planet.

Trans people aren't going away. Live with it.

This whole right-wing crusade against trans people (for just being themselves) is ridiculous and I submit you're gullible for believing it. They're not threatening anyone & they just want to live their lives. The wonderful thing about free speech is that I can say that. And you have the right to disagree and block me.

    alex,

It shows you communities from within your own instance.

Local doesn't mean "geographically local", it means "within your own instance" local.

    alex,

referencing users on Lemmy is not at all the same as reddit, since there are multiple instances.

there's no automagic function for it (at least not on the web there isn't - that's probably why you couldn't find one), you just have to do it by hand.

    ie. @Foreverwinter@lemmy.world becomes: @Foreverwinter

I thought Mastodon is part of fedeverse, but I do not see any threads or microblogs from mastodon here. Why?

    alex, (edited )

Mastodon is a different format and structure than Lemmy. However, you can post and comment from Mastodon but you can't do much of anything else without a Lemmy account.

There are some better answers in this thread:
