I heard about the recent Imgur stuff but I haven't used it for MANY years. Just got emailed about their updated TOS, I assume that's the changes I was hearing about, that they're gonna scrub older/nsfw stuff? And it's gonna be weird for legacy websites because lots of images will disappear? Sucks.

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 Yeah, because scrubbing content worked so well for Tumblr haha.

It would be super helpful if it was possible to flag closed accounts in the people directory. Although, I imagine they will automatically be removed when crawled again? @pixelfed

@pixelfed Awesome! Thanks for the reply!

๐Ÿค” Been looking into Tone Indicators recently. Going to try to use them where appropriate.

I feel that they have the potential to help remove ambiguity from posts.

Would be interested to hear otherโ€™s thoughts about this /gen

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@amxmln So, they are things like /s (sarcasm) and /genq (genuine question). They help to indicate the tone of the post, as in text, it's not always obvious.

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@amxmln I do agree that they could be confusing. I have seen them around on some posts however, and wondered what they were. Someone posted about them the other day an I was curious lol.

I think the Starbound method is more clear... and I think, to an extent, emoji set the tone of a post anyway

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@alexandra Oh yes, I don't think they would be all that helpful in every single post or situation... often an emoji would suffice.

I'm going to be offering custom cartoon portrait profile pic commissions starting next week.

I have done many in the past, so will be uploading some examples, which are similar in style to my own.

They will each be supplied as 1000px PNGs.

Thinking of pricing at โ‚ฌ25 each.

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@alexandra No worries, I hope to have details about the pic commissions ready next week at some point ๐Ÿ™‚

Going to use ko-fi for it I think.

I've been taking B12 supplements.

Wen superpowers?

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@tristy Haha, I've never really had a problem with jabs, but the help with energy levels I've heard about could be useful.

Do you know if the jabs differ in effectiveness to supplements?

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@tristy Oh yes, I imagine that would affect absorption of well... everything!

I don't think we need to have a Mastodon vs. Bluesky showdown. I think they're too different.

The longer post format on Mastodon (extended much further on some instances) leads to more discursive posts. You can get more thoughts down. Show nuance. Flesh out your arguments.

The Bluesky limit of 300 characters lends itself to hot takes, pithiness, sharp wit and shitposts.

I don't think any of those things are bad - but maybe they have their place, and that place is more there, than here.

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@sarajw I honestly have zero interest in BS. And, from what I'm hearing about the TOS, it's getting less attractive to me by the day!

๐Ÿคช Slept pretty well, woke up feeling awesome. Had coffee and breakfast and now sitting at my desk with another coffee, ready for work.

On the agenda today, mostly continuing work on a logo for an engineering app.

Are companies such as Dropbox pivoting to AI purely as a result of FOMO?

Is "because everyone else is doing it" a good enough reason?

We are soon going to be flooded with pervasive AI tech throughout everything we use... and I'm not convinced that this is a good thing.

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@amxmln Thanks for the link, I will take a look. I currently use BackBlaze B2, but purely for NAS backup/sync, not cloud storage, although I believe it can be used for that. Price works out at $5 per tb per month. https://www.backblaze.com/b2/cloud-storage.html

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@amxmln It's good value, especially as 1TB isn't the minimum. My storage bucket is a lot less than that (about 300gb IIRC), so my monthly charge last month was $1.88 lol.

Totally worth it for the offsite backup.

Does anyone here have a /uses page on their site?

I enjoy reading them, to see the setups that people use.

Would anyone be interested in reading if I added one to my site/here/someplace?

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@alexandra I could get my old one looked at, but I imagine it would cost more than itโ€™s worth to service.

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@alexandra That IS a bargain!

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@alexandra Ooh, even better! I would need a new battery and a few other things in mine. Likely not worth getting repaired now tbh
