Life's an array of arrays. 101010 exactly.
Philosophy & Programming. I love coding, comic-books (and no-comic books), films and (dark and loud mostly) music. I suck at all of this. <3

I have a silly question for you, Fedi. I have a 1:N relationship between artists and countries table. I know countries may change, but let's assume that it's a fixed list for now. What would you do to retrieve the countries data to use in a form to create a new artist: query the DB, or just declare a constant array in the form view, and why? Thank you in advance. :)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@dani Yeah, this concrete case doesn't seem that much of a big deal done in either way. But my doubt is mostly generic, as in, when I have an arguably fixed list that needed to be stored in the DB (which can be even way shorter, user roles for example), is it better to having a constant declared somewhere (as in a constants file?), or just query the DB every time? Thanks for your response, I know it may seem a silly question but I'm curious. :)

@mykhaylo @dani That looks interesting. I understand that cached querys imply less database overhead. In the web app I'm doing now that may not be such a big deal, but I may be dealing with enterprise webs complex enough to look for the better performance possible, so this is good to take into account, thanks. :)

@danielsiepmann It helps indeed. I have to investigate this, as I'm not really sure how to effectively implement that in the Laravel context, but it deserves the investigation I believe. Thanks! :)

I'm pretty amazed with + + . In a nutshell, you don't have to write routes for your API endpoints and then routes in your frontend views, and then frontend methods to retrieve data and so on. You mostly work as if you were serving your server-side rendered views, write your models and controllers, and then you just pass the data as props to your Vue pages and components, and bang, done! I'm really having fun with my pet project. :)

I'll likely have some, say, free time from now on. So I can finally begin with some pet projects as an excuse to keep on learning, and yesterday I began a / project. Something I thought would be fun to do and I can use after (and if) it's done, a web app where I can keep track of my favorite music, fill data wiki-style, write reviews, and who knows what else. Some hours into that and I remember why I loved Laravel so much since I learned it a bit. :)

Does anybody here work with ? I'm having an issue where variable options drop-downs are not working on certain devices. Works on my iPhone, but not any of my desktops: Firefox, Chrome or otherwise. Could it be a browser engine thing? My friend said it wasn't working on her AirBook either.

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@pn3uma Are you sure it's a WooCommerce problem, and not template-related? Have you inspected the code with the browser dev tools?

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@pn3uma Glad if I helped. :) Come again if you need something, I can't promise I can come with a solution but I can try. :D

Super exhausting week so far. Have a family member in the hospital, trying to take care of family matters and shuttle people around that need it.

I was driving home from one such errand feeling so tired I could feel it in my lungs, and then I realized:

Hey, this is how a lot of moms feel EVERY DAY.

Holy crap, guys. Let's show some appreciation.

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane I don't know in yours, but in my country is sort of customary that when a closely related family member is in the hospital, someone has to stay day and night to nursing them. You just literally just stay, sleep in a chair by the person's bed, help them with daily small tasks (change diapers if necessary, help them take a shower if possible, that kind of stuff). You do mostly nothing and you get tired as hell, ironically. What I mean is, I feel you. Have a hug and best wishes! <3

It's official, wrote my renounce letter today, so back to the desert caravan of job search again. But I feel fine, as I've shown no other but myself that I could land a job as a programmer and survive the experience. Why I'm leaving is long to tell, but let's just say that I'd still be there if I could just keep on doing web programming projects, but that would have been no longer the case. I'll have my chance again, and if not... I'll just keep on coding, no matter what. :)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane Not such a big deal. I come stronger from the experience. It will come out better next time. :)

@fedops I've worked as a waiter, gardener, forest worker, barman, clerk, hell, I've parked cars for a living... Any of those would be better now that keeping on with my current position, so yeah, I think I'll find something better, even if I write bugs only at home (and I'm not talking of a remote position). XD And thanks! <3

I began with programming about 3 years ago, and did an Associate Degree in web programming. If I may say so, I passed with pretty good grades, but 3 months after I landed my first gig, I am more convinced every day that I arrived too late for this. I have an Humanities background, zero Science/Maths in my belt, and I'm just too old for this. It's been a ride, trying to make my way from zero to code monkey at 50. So let's call it a day now that I'm still winning. <3

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@AndyScott The irony is that my employers have something of a blind faith in me. They see a hard worker, and that seems good enough for them, I think. But my daily struggles have put me to the border once and again, and I'm past the point of breaking. Working extra hours and on weekends is not a problem for me; blindly trying to solve stuff way in over my head, that is a problem. Sigh, I can't complain, it's been a ride and I've shown myself I could make it. Now in to begin again. :)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@AndyScott It really helps, and I wish you can achieve whatever your goal with this is. <3 At a certain age, people don't seem to believe someone can reinvent themselves, go back to school and open a new path. But as I've said before, it's as simple as making up your mind, and just go day by day. I'm still unsure of my professional immediate future, but I know that I'll keep on coding, hired or just in my free time, because I really love it, and that should be enough. :)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@Montag @AndyScott No, I did my AD in web development, so that's where I've been trying to get into. I think I can make this, it's just that in my current company they juggle with a little bit of everything, from the usual full dev stack to WP and PrestaShop to Filemaker, and I can't keep on with everything, all at once. I am happy when I have a project which is "just code", but then I have to switch, sometimes three or four times a day, to something completely different... :(

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@AndyScott I really do. :) When I leave $currentJob, I'll begin with some pet projects. And whatever comes next. ;)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@jhx Sure thing. :) I still don't feel really old, just trying to set where my limits are, and adjust expectations. But it doesn't look really bad, on the contrary. Now I'm just on for a new adventure. :)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@jhx Let our fantastic, imaginative and boundless inner childs keep on living! :D

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@geraldew Data work seems like a lot of maths seen from the outside, I confess I ignore this so please correct me if I'm wrong. ;) Anyway my degree is in web development so that's what I think I can do, but unless is something too different to that, it would not matter if I would do something else... Provided I can write bugs all day long. :D

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@geraldew I don't know much about the field, but if the opportunity arises and one doesn't really need a strong math background, then maybe I could try. As I said, I just want to write code. Thanks for suggesting! :)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@geraldew I would be very interested in reading that history, so I would appreciate if you ping me when it's done, if I may ask so. :) And I would be very interested in reading your coding history too, would you share the link? Thanks in advance.

And I find the work interesting too, but I'm having really a hard time finding a reliable employment which is obviously pretty necessary. But if I fail it will be not for the lack of trying. ;)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@geraldew Thank you so much, I'll read it this evening... I'm sure I'll enjoy this, and I'll learn one thing or two! :)
