Over the last 10 years, AR has become a mondial network of 500+ artistic institutions, non-profits, municipalities, state institutions and international organisations to assist, relocate and fund artists who are at risk of persecution or oppression, or are fleeing war or terror.

Let us introduce Aws Al-Zubaïdy (b.1993), a Palestinian performer and director currently living in Verscio, Switzerland and originally from Bethlehem, Palestine.

Al-Zubaïdy's theatrical journey has taken him across borders, with performances in Palestine, Germany, Jordan, Pakistan, Tunisia and Switzerland. His diverse cultural experiences have shaped his artistic sensibility, allowing him to bring a unique perspective to each stage.

When the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay speaks of the ARTISTS AT RISK PAVILION in Venice, you sit up!

We were pleasantly surprised to be informed, retrospectively, of her powerful message on World Art Day 2024, which emphasised the key role of the protection of the status and livelihoods of artists and cultural professionals by the UNESCO-Aschberg Programme.

Artists at risk are invited to apply by 20 May 2024 to the State of the ART(ist) Open Call.

Artists at Risk (AR)’s Co-Directors Ivor Stodolsky @ivor and Marita Muukkonen were on the jury in 2023 & are part of the jury again this year.

State of the ART(ist) is a collaborative project between the Austrian Federal Ministry of European and International Affairs & Ars Electronica @arselectronica.

A wave of euphoria hit the audience as Fo Sho Sisters, the Ukrainian-Ethiopian hip-hop trio, dived into their set. What an amazing concert for the closing act of the ARTISTS AT RISK PAVILION! So overwhelming, that both Jörg Heiser in Republik magazine (https://www.republik.ch/2024/04/26/demo-auf-der-biennale) and the renowned filmmaker Hito Steyerl @hito (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nUnvowFAk4&t=452s) acclaimed FO SHO as worthy of the Golden Lion.

SaidAhmed Mohammed Alhassan from presented two newly commissioned sculptures in The AR PAVILION. Alhassan is currently an AR-Resident at ArtVeda AR-Tunis.

‘Whale - Borders 1 & 2’ are life-ring-like inner-tubes covered by a mosaic made of materials such as tesserae, stone, glass, ceramic, and Sudanese fabrics.

We can hardly contain our joy and excitement that Delaine Le Bas, our great friend and long-time partner of AR/PM in multiple initiatives, has been nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize!

Delaine Le Bas’ iconic ‘Romani Embassy’ is part of the AR Pavilion at UNESCO Venice’s Palazzo Zorzi.

Kholod Hawash has the distinction of being presented in two pavilions on the occasion of the 2024 Venice Biennale!

Her sumptuous, vibrant textile ‘Long Nights’ holds a prominent space in the AR Pavilion. Her hand-sewn costumes, furthermore, are a key visual aspect of 'The Altersea Opera' in the Nordic Countries Pavilion.

Also present at the ARTISTS AT RISK PAVILION in Venice was renowned Iranian #filmmaker in exile Mahmoud Ghaffari. Ghaffari is an AR-Resident in Barcelona.

On 24 April his film ‘The Apple Day’ will premiere at CCCB. Its screenwriter Mahnaz Jarchi is also an AR-Resident.

The #film portrays the everyday life of a family in a suburb of Tehran, offering a sensitive yet critical look at the social & political reality in #Iran.

"Shades of Ukraine", the first solo exhibition by Ukrainian artist and Artists at Risk (AR) Resident, Yelyzaveta Marynina opened on 21 March 2024 at Myymälä2 in Helsinki, Finland. The exhibition will run till 31 March.
